calini··on Floci: Locally emulating any cloud service
As a Romanian, I chuckle at this.

Do it in Go and I’m interested

This is so perfect!

This should be the policy anyway, everywhere.

Hello!
calini··on iOS 26 Gets First Jailbreak Thanks to Dopamine
I remember the days of jailbreaking my iPhone 3G to add multitasking and a control centre! Good to see it isn't fully dead. That being said, we are getting iOS 27 in a month.
calini··on Show HN: A time zone converter where the URL encodes the whole comparison
I love the idea in general of query params encoding all the necessary state to be able to share it. Very useful.
calini··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
The Weather app in Windows is more ads than weather, so it checks out.
calini··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
RIP Stoke City.
calini··on Command and Conquer Generals natively ported to macOS, iPhone, iPad using Fable
Cool, now do Red Alert 2.

Just kidding, fantastic effort! But still looking to play RA2 on my iPad :)

calini··on Steam Machine launches today
Man it's so unfortunate that this launch coincided with the component crisis, forcing the prices to be just outside the range of people that were debating between getting this and getting a console, it would've made so much more of an impact if the prices were $200 lower.
calini··on Please Switch to Python. Or R. Or Anything. Just Not Stata, SAS, SPSS, or Matlab
Go or bust.
calini··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
I'll be really honest, I was running out of time on a mid size ticket at work. Basically swapping ~50 models from Go native to Protobuf messages, preserving some sane defaults we had in some already declared `.pb`s. I let it do it, it one shotted it, then I thought "hmm, would be nice for it to keep a changelog of big changes it does for me from now on so I don't have to keep reminding myself. I told it, and it created a hook for itself to do just that. From that chat onwards, every change bigger than what it considered "trivial" got added to an `AGENT_CHANGELOG.md`.

That got me hooked.

calini··on Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot
Eyy, I stumbled upon this website when I was 10, glad to see it’s still up!
calini··on Ten Basic Clouds
Not offline for me
calini··on Should I run plain Docker Compose in production in 2026?
Still looking for a nicer solution to just deploy some personal projects that are usually 1 container big but might end up being 2-4, and being able to do logging, tracing, rolling updates, networking, etc; For now using Docker Compose for most of that.
calini··on Review of 1984 by Isaac Asimov (1980)
This also happened heavily under the Romanian communist regime. My parents were first hand witness to that.
calini··on Yawning has an unexpected influence on the fluid inside your brain
You know how yawning is also a social function, and seeing someone yawn makes you yawn? I just got forced into a good neurofluid flow reorganization session just by reading the title.
calini··on After RAM and SSDs, PSUs and CPU coolers are next in line for price hikes
So glad I upgraded my PC right before this.
calini··on Ask HN: How to deal with long vibe-coded PRs?
Vibe merge review it using Copilot or equivalent, and then close it :)
calini··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
What are the specifics of the SSDs you chose? I understand you have to go for specific types/models to make sure they don't melt down too quickly.
calini··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
HA HA HA HA HA I really hope the C-suite that decided this gets no bonus and hopefully a salary cut this year. Stupid, anti-consumer measures like this need proper consequences so they stop happening. Until then, let's keep boycotting companies with anti-consumer practices.
calini··on What to do with an old iPad
502: Bad Gateway - Host Error. Hilarious
calini··on University of Cambridge Cognitive Ability Test
Don't ask me why but I did feel a tiny bit bummed out after getting 50 and being told I'm in the 68th percentile out of 13000~ people.

It's worth considering who the other participants are, has this been mostly shared just among University of Cambridge students / staff (and HN readers now)?

calini··on Why Romania excels in international Olympiads
Lived in Romania until I finished high school. Professors would always push us to compete in the olympiads, there was an informal system where some professors, even if they were not the one teaching your class, would take you under your wing to prepare you to hit county/national/international level, you’d be allowed to skip school for a week/month depending on the level you got to, there was even some prestige to be gained.

I was personally never motivated to go past county, but it was a fun time.

calini··on The Internet 1997–2021
The title made me think it's a type of eulogy to the pre-AI, pre-ChatGPT Internet, but I was pleasantly surprised by pretty colours instead!
