Can someone please fill me in on how this is edge, these are the 3 regions every cloud provider has

byhemechi··on Motorbike crashes: highside and lowside crashes explained
I've done both of these (on dirt and ice). "A lowside crash is usually less damaging than a highside crash" is one hell of an understatement. With a lowside and wearing the right gear you might end up a bit dizzy from tumbling, with a highside you are launched into the air and as soon as you land you have your entire 200 kilogram bike tumbling towards you. I've been lucky and been uninjured every time but you can really picture a lot of damage being done by having the thing land on top of you, even if you dont hurt yourself when you hit the ground

Have you ever written something that uses it?
byhemechi··on Apple Announces New MacBook Air with 15.3-Inch Display and M2 Chip
my 2020 13" macbook keyboard works just fine (sample size of one though so probably doesn't count for much)
byhemechi··on Don't let Reddit kill 3rd party apps
The problem with that is that you need to spend money to either host your own instance or pay someone else to do it for you. Most people are tech-illiterate and do not want to pay to host something which doesnt even reach the threshold to be a "hobby"
byhemechi··on Air New Zealand now weighing passengers before they board flights
what data are you going to train said AI with?
byhemechi··on Fly GPUs
It's interesting to watch fly.io gradually transition from "Run things you need to be low latency" to "Run your entire stack".

I personally am a huge fan of their platform but I really wonder how well they're going to do trying to get people to use their platform instead of the classic "spin up a vm on ec2"

It's working for me but I'm already on apps that either dockerise easily or are already going into containers

byhemechi··on DfT Recommends Removing WiFi from Trains to Cut Costs
Railways are an excellent mode of travel. They are significantly more efficient than cars in all ways that matter: cost, space, energy.

Nobody looks at the billions spent on roads and thinks "ooh these are unprofitable let's get rid of them", so why do people/governments constantly do that for rail?

The reasoning people use to justify the spending on roads is that the economic value people and goods transported on said roads outweighs the costs of building and maintaining them. Trains are more efficent than cars on this simply bu economics of scale: one long tube with metal wheels carrying 2000 people into the city moves a lot more than a freeway of the same area.

byhemechi··on Using Bun.js as a Bundler
iirc next.js only uses swc for the dev mode bundler

edit: this is no longer the case, ignore me :)

byhemechi··on Pixel Tablet
it's actually insane, obviously this isn't google but it is actually cheaper for me to fly from prague to the US, buy a new macbook and fly back than it is for me to buy one locally. It makes absolutely no sense
byhemechi··on Into Thin AirPods
My experience with Find My and Airpods is not great, if i look at them on the map i have had it say that my left airpod is 20km away while it is in fact in my ear.
byhemechi··on Space Elevator
hi, i’m australian, the only time i ever use imperial is if i work with hydraulic hoses or (rarely) tell someone my height we pretty much only use metric, unlike the uk
byhemechi··on Battery-free Game Boy (2020)
I'm pretty sure @userbinator is talking about taking the exact same circuit but making it on something like TSMC's 4nm process, rather than an emulator running on a general purpose processor (i.e. CPU)
byhemechi··on From Go on EC2 to Fly.io
Fly actually has rudimentary static file hosting: you can use a [[statics]] block in fly.toml and any exact filename match (no index.html etc) will be served directly from the router. I'm not sure this would end up being useful for OP's exact usecase, i'm pretty sure it doesn't set etags.

i believe OPFS is supported on nightly? don’t quote me on this yeah
byhemechi··on Apple Business Connect
Business profiles have been the only reason for me to use google maps over apple. Hopefully this finally makes it possible to reduce the number of map apps on my phone
byhemechi··on Pirate Weather: A free, open, and documented forecast API

(in the united states)
byhemechi··on I worked at LastPass as an engineer
Not encrypting the URLs is just such a baffling choice, i honestly don't understand how that ever happened.

Also, as far as i can tell with some very basic maths based on running hashcat on my 3070, if you have a big long password on your vault, even with very few rounds of pbkdf, your actual passwords should be safe.

I think 1Password's use of an extra "secret key" would be a huge save in a situation like this, where every encryption key is automatically very long

byhemechi··on Why did the flywheel hybrid system never catch on for road cars? (2021)
that's just electrical regen braking

they seem to have simply removed the gradients and it just looks half baked with only flat colours

byhemechi··on Former Twitter Employee Sentenced to 42 Months for Acting as a Foreign Agent
I don't see any reason to deny the man solely based on his name that is not just overt racism.
byhemechi··on Team New Zealand set new wind-powered land speed record on South Australian Lake
Wind powered craft are generally powered by deflecting the wind at an angle, rather than using the wind behind them to travel forwards. It's the same reason that sailboats can move into the wind.

It's very hard for me to explain without diagrams, this wikipedia article explains it pretty well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-performance_sailing

byhemechi··on Vite 4.0
ahh well, guess i should've read it more carefully. joke's on me i guess
byhemechi··on Vite 4.0
there are breaking changes, but pretty much any intended behaviour changing has automated codemods
byhemechi··on Vite 4.0
i really like vite, my biggest complaint with it previously was that it used the incredibly slow babel in development. i'm very happy to see it's moving to swc, this will hopefully make large sveltekit projects not use all of my battery with hot reload
byhemechi··on Is There Too Much CSS Now?
obviously this isn't a solution to the issue of scrollbars being too small, but middle click scrolling is actually pretty good if you want to scroll quickly without dragging the scrollbar
byhemechi··on We improved React loading times with Next.js
remix comes with the main caveat that if your API is slow or very far away you will end up with a slow frontend, whereas next.js prerenders pages meaning they're always going to be fast. obviously this doesn't matter that much if you're making a customer dashboard but if you want to have public facing data and your backend isn't globally replicated you are either going to have to implement your own caching layer or your users are going to have a bad time
