bydo··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
Everyone moving to USB-C was the same standard, though; now you can use the same charger with your phone, laptop, tablet, other random gadgets, etc. If you forget your charger you can buy one virtually anywhere, or borrow someone else's, since they're all the same.

Everyone moving to "battery must be replaceable without tools" doesn't do anything useful for most users. Yeah, now you can carry an extra battery on a camping trip, I guess, though you could also carry a portable USB-C charger and use it for more than just your phone. It isn't particularly useful that it doesn't take tools to replace the battery when it starts failing, five years after your phone was discontinued, if you can't find a replacement battery for that exact model.

The Joint Photographic Experts Group manages many standards, generally each called "JPEG [something]". The one we most commonly call "JPEG" is just one of them.

bydo··on Tesla's German car sales more than halve in October as wider EV sales jump
Why weren't they "battery limited" when they were making more cars?
bydo··on [dead]
Particularly when considering that each of their cars does have a human backup driver who should be taking over to avoid crashes. How much worse would the cars be unsupervised?
bydo··on iPhone customers upset by Apple Wallet ad pushing F1 movie
We really need more granular notification settings already. I want to to know when my Lyft is arriving. I want to know when my food's been delivered. I don't want to know that I can get 10% off something for the next hour.

Apparently in the new beta the Wallet app actually does let you disable promotional notifications, so that's a start. Now do every other app.

I don't believe the built in virtualization framework supports emulation, but you can do this with QEMU. An easy way to get started is with UTM:

Poster specifically mentioned CS3, which was a perpetual license. Adobe is not incentivized to keep a version of their software someone purchased once seventeen years ago working when they would much rather sell a monthly subscription.

Not really. The only generation of Xbox that was competitive was the 360, which still came in third in sales, just not as distantly.

bydo··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
The Washington Post has endorsed a candidate every election cycle since 1976, with the exception of 1988. The New York Times has endorsed a candidate in every presidential election since its founding in 1851.

Samsung beat them to it. It wasn't a market success.
bydo··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
This is (only a few years later than the rest of the world's) state-of-the-art manufacturing, built only with the expertise of a Taiwanese company, that relies on the technology of a Dutch company, that in turn purchased (and has since monopolized) its IP from another US company, twenty years ago, and only then because a number of other companies (notably Canon and Nikon, both in Japan) were excluded from using it.

It is not something to be celebrated. What TSMC and ASML are doing is amazing, but we could be so much further ahead.

bydo··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
That ASML is not undercutting TSMC and running off on their own should be telling? There's more to a running a fab than lithography.
bydo··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
Not even. The only device still in production using the A16 is the iPhone 15 (and plus if you consider that a different model).

bydo··on 48% of NYC riders do not pay the bus fare
It's more complicated than that, because some stations with multiple lines get counted multiple times for that. Though even if NYC does have 20 more stations than Shanghai, it's a bit of a stretch to call that "by far". When, again, other cities have twice the tunnel length and nearly twice the ridership.

There are neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn where the closest subway station can be miles away, and there is an entire borough in NYC that has no general subway access at all, so not buying that one either.

bydo··on 48% of NYC riders do not pay the bus fare
> NYC has the largest subway system in the world _by_far_

It absolutely does not. It is the 12th in length and 10th by ridership: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metro_systems

bydo··on Judge orders removal of 1,000ft rotting ocean liner from Philadelphia pier
It does mean something to a lot of people. It was a monument to American engineering. Once it launched, it immediately won the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic in a passenger ship, a record no US ship had held for a century. That record still stands 70+ years later. It's just a really cool ship? It's a shame that it's been neglected for so long and will now almost certainly be destroyed.
bydo··on US court to hear challenges to potential TikTok ban in September
If we regulate the Internet like we do the airwaves, "obscenity, indecency, and profanity" are now illegal.[0]

>It is a violation of federal law to air obscene programming at any time. It is also a violation of federal law to broadcast indecent or profane programming during certain hours. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines indecent speech as material that, in context, depicts or describes sexual or excretory organs or activities in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium.

>Congress has given the FCC the responsibility for administratively enforcing the law that governs these types of broadcasts. The FCC has authority to issue civil monetary penalties, revoke a license or deny a renewal application. The FCC vigorously enforces this law where we find violations. In addition, the United States Department of Justice has authority to pursue criminal violations. Violators of the law, if convicted in a federal district court, are subject to criminal fines and/or imprisonment for not more than two years.

bydo··on T-Mobile to acquire most of U.S. Cellular in $4.4B deal
Monopoly is about choice, not revenue. I don't care how little Comcast or Spectrum makes compared to Google or Facebook when I'm forced to use their terrible service because there are no other options available.
bydo··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro

bydo··on Crash tests show nation's guardrail system can't handle heavy electric vehicles

bydo··on Beeper's esoteric fix for iMessage access suggests why it's pushing politically
There was only one AT&T, and to connect a third-party phone to their network still required paying AT&T for access. There are dozens of digital messaging alternatives to iMessage, and Beeper doesn't appear to be interested in paying any of them.
