buugs··on The Incompetence of American Airlines and the Fate of Mr. X
This however is an idea usually reserved for hindsight.
buugs··on Gantt Software
That is the one I am thinking of.
buugs··on Gantt Software
Most often you'll find templates for excel and such, there is also a program that comes with one of the microsoft office suites (more than likely a business class one) that can create gantt charts pretty well but I can't remember the name

The thing about working for free is you really don't have to do it and if you do require this work to be done for one reason or another you really aren't working for free (or nothing).
buugs··on Firefox finally passes IE6
That second graph looks as if no scaling choices were made and the person just randomly chose to put spacing in.
buugs··on AT&T not happy with Verizon ads: 'There's a lawsuit for that'
Both maps clearly state 3G coverage in the ad and do not say network coverage anywhere in it, why even go for a lawsuit like this?
buugs··on Most of Slicehost is Down
Kind of interesting with the lack of communication when you look at comments like this http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=906820 (left parent for context)
buugs··on The Way I Work: Jason Fried of 37Signals
He is most definitely not speaking like TV and movies are the real world as your quote seems to make out. I also tend to stay away from fiction other than the occasional short story and find that autobiographies and other forms of non-fiction offer a nice creative boost in their writing.
buugs··on Poll: What's your level of educational attainment
Maybe you were just in the wrong degree as I've seen different studies are catered to different kinds of students (though the going to class thing is a motivation issue.)
buugs··on The Ph.D. Problem
It also works in the reverse order as my professors who fill in for those who take sabbaticals are those that work at the national labs near here as well as the engineering companies. Though these professors are a bit harder to reach than full-time professors.
buugs··on [dead]
I don't like long self posts as the colour/font is much harder to read than say default wordpress blog or posterous posting.
buugs··on ITunes update screws text. Official solution: remove all your third-party fonts
Well that is terrible, why would that be an official solution rather than reverting back to old font rendering system or removing a specific font that is causing issue.

This is like setting a banking website to use a non readable font using css and asking the user to remove that font or disable css to use online banking. (Though Itunes should be less important than banking it is the only example I could think of.. maybe email would be better).

buugs··on Most College Students To Take Classes Online by 2014
I took a hybrid course which is online but you meet with a real teacher once a week and my biggest problem was that we used blackboards software to do discussions and such and it was a terrible experience.

It made me wish I had just taken a normal course.

buugs··on The King is Dead? Long live... Scala? Clojure?
I think you've missed how the computer world works, sure people still program in fortran but that doesn't mean it is still at the same working extent.

cobol -> c++ -> java actually happened pretty quickly and I'd expect when a useful alternative proves itself in a few niche senses on large scale a new language will be adopted and everyone will have something else to complain about.

buugs··on Hivelogic - Top Programming Fonts
Maybe for the same reasons you offered: readability and easy to look at.

Some modern monospaced fonts are rather nice to look at, Consolas for example, and the ability to distinguish between 0O1l easily is an advantage for some fonts without having weird letter spacings.

buugs··on The Shocking State of Contemporary "Mathematics"
Some or most of this may be related to how complicated modern mathematics has become, I know at my college there are 6 undergraduate mathematics degrees to choose from (in regards to specialty) and only grows when you move into graduate school.
buugs··on Fast Food Is Why You’re Fat
Oh thank goodness I thought it was because I ate too much.
buugs··on Want 50Mbps Internet in your town? Threaten to roll out your own
That is very interesting, it probably works well for communities where minimal investment is needed (your 2000 US) but in many more rural towns it just falls under.

Such as for the house I am at right now, a well was dug for water a septic tank was dug for sewage power lines and phone lines were extended (most likely from nearby overhead lines) when the house was built. The problem is that fiber is not extended through overhead lines but dug in, and in a place where satellite is the only option I bet would be extremely expensive depending on how far apart houses are spread apart.

I lucked out that low quality dsl was available I don't think I could handle a sat connection.

buugs··on Daring Fireball: Pound the Quality
It is obvious that gruber is an avid mac user from his posts and generally dislikes windows as many mac users due but this:

But Windows is proof that popularity doesn’t guarantee market-leading quality.
Makes me wonder what market he is speaking of, if it is something along the lines of graphic design (both OS and for uses) sure the mac ranks pretty high up but what about corporate environments, average home users, aging adults, engineering software (civil, electrical, mechanical) these are all things that windows ranks pretty high for market quality.

Windows may be a pain in the ass for some power users or home end users but I bet if the market shares were reversed mac would be heckled as much as windows by average users and certain power users.

buugs··on Peace.facebook.com
Okay sure a few people did crosswords but I'm talking like 50 percent of the students having their computers out on facebook and playing dumb facebook games. It is distracting to me who ends up sitting in the middle of the class cause my other class is across campus and ends late and having a bunch of flashing computers in front of me.

Makes me glad I'm in engineering where people need to focus, it doesn't help that this freshman level class enforces attendance either cause these people probably wouldn't even be showing up.

buugs··on Peace.facebook.com
In other facebook news everyone in my freshman level class spends the whole lecture on facebook on their computer and is very surprising to me that the teacher doesnt ban computers from the classroom. ( When I started 2 years ago no one even pulled out computers during lectures unless they were at the back of the room. )

Maybe facebook is planning world peace through extended computer use.

buugs··on GMail Can't Read a Period
Most definitely, or it is indeed spam as spammers seem to be getting really tricky these days.
buugs··on Linode having some issues
The forum page isn't loading for me, what problems are they having?

My vps is still up and has been up (at the dallas datacenter) and seems to be working fine.

buugs··on TSA Response to XKCD “Bag Check” Cartoon
Actually the human body is quite good at muffling explosions and would require a substantial amount of explosives to cause large damage outside of ones body.

edit: Here's a Schneier post on such a bomber: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2009/09/ass_bomber.htm...

buugs··on Ask HN: Why are there still human teachers?
My brother goes to a school where they use computers to work through lessons at their own pace. There are humans lecturing (kind of a youtube with powerpoint split video) and they solve the questioning problem by having teachers for each subject in the same room as the students.

Personally I think this is a rather stupid way to do school because you don't get that interaction that you would in a normal school, one such example would be when a teacher asks you about the current subject and you have to quickly use critical thinking to come up with an appropriate answer. This is completely lost when such a learning system is used.

buugs··on Contraptor - open source DIY hardware prototyping
Next year I get access to my schools machine shop and metal scraps so I'll hopefully be able to build something along these lines.
buugs··on Google Wave: we came, we saw, we played D&D
See the real problem with that is I am probably neither fun nor witty and probably wouldn't be able to handle creating a fake world and exploring said world. I couldn't even play WoW when a friend bought me an account (but thats probably more heroin than cocaine).
buugs··on Does Economics Violate the Laws of Physics?
This isn't violating any laws of physics instead it is economists not taking into account well economics... companies vested in energy aren't going to say that they aren't going to have energy in the future, same goes for oil and car producers and it actually ends up trickling down.
buugs··on Google Wave: we came, we saw, we played D&D
I guess since I have never played d and d I would skip straight to distributing porn?
buugs··on Contraptor - open source DIY hardware prototyping
It is like an erector set for grownups, makes me wish I had 300 extra dollars to spend.
