butler14··on Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse (2021) [pdf]
Thanks!
butler14··on Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse (2021) [pdf]
I have a substation in my back yard, approximately 15ft from my house.

Anyone have a sense of what "damage to transformers" means? Like, it frazzles out in its own housing, or takes half my street out?

butler14··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?
My dog walker - a man with a fairly troubled life and very low levels of literacy - used it to write product descriptions for an eCommerce website he's in the process of launching.

Part of me thinks the tech echo chamber is working the other way around here: a lot of techies who just know and and talk to other techies are all in a bubble thinking it's all overhyped blahablhabah without stepping back and thinking how it can enable every day people (whatever that means) to do things they previously could not -- at speed.

butler14··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?
That's exactly what it does. It closes the gap. Even now with all its shortcomings and issues.

It's actively solving problems for people and saving time / creating efficiency. That has value and economic utility.

I honestly don't get what a lot of the cynics in this thread and their "highly technical/IT friends" are missing.

butler14··on Lawyers blame ChatGPT for tricking them into citing bogus case law
Great anecdote, thanks for sharing. Forcing ChatGPT to go back and sense check its overarching initial interpretation is such a good way of doing things in these types of uses cases.
butler14··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
Difficult to comment without URLs, there's too many potential causes

Unfortunately "[being] a web designer since 2016" is generally not helpful for SEO

But certainly setting up Google Search Console, submitting a sitemap, and 'fetching' your homepage on day 1 is good practice, especially for a brand new website

butler14··on GPT makes learning fun again
This is the classic "google is so crap now", then when you dig a bit, the search query is something incredibly broad (in this case "led") or irrelevant, with the author then complaining about the quality of the results

I'm not taking anything away from Chat-GPT for this use case, but I see the above pattern in almost every Google bashing thread on HN.

butler14··on A.I. imagery may destroy history as we know it
I agree. As well as creating new impetus for governments to push towards RealID, I think generative AI will accelerate the rate at which websites start to wall-off behind logins and we see a resurgence in private communities.

I'm reminded of Facebook's progression over the past 5-6 years, where, in its established markets at least, most of the good stuff happens in private Facebook groups or private WhatsApp chats, not on the 'public' newsfeed/wall.

butler14··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
i cannot echo this sentiment strongly enough

how the algo can be so good, and so bad, at the same time boggles my mind

the repetition just feels so unnecessary in many cases -- I know there's so much more content out there that is not a huge leap from what I watch regularly but the recommendation engine makes it broadly inaccessible

one related symptom of this - i think - is when you watch one or two videos on one new thing and then get drowned in videos about that thing at the expense of everything else

butler14··on New Arkansas bill to keep minors off social media exempts most social platforms
I also started using the Internet when I was around 10, in the mid-90s

I suspect Generative AI will accelerate the transition to real ID

There’s a new impetus to be able to tell who is real from who is not online

Younger me would probably be angry and disappointed at how I have all but accepted that it’s going to happen one way or another

butler14··on Leader of Online Group Where Secret Documents Leaked Is Air National Guardsman
The various 70 year olds heads of state? They, er … kinda the ones who started it
butler14··on Accenture would cut 19,000 jobs
They'll sell you anything. Look at the service offerings in the main navigation on their website, it's hilarious.

I've just had the 'pleasure' of being party to some of their 'SEO' advice (to a large global pharma company, who was paying them $$$ p/h).

butler14··on Ask HN: Why on Earth does Europe have 3 month notice periods to switch jobs?
3 months is reserved for mid- senior roles, and 6 months isn’t uncommon for senior management/board level (often with enforced garden leave)

as a business owner, it protects me from key employees leaving me in the shit and gives me 3 months to replace them

as an employee, it gives them security that I won’t drop them in the shit and they will have 3 months to find a job or risk not being able to pay their bills

It doesn’t seem super complicated

butler14··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
Read out some of the creepier messages, but imagine it’s one of those Boston Dynamics robots up in your face saying it
butler14··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
I agree that the incentives were off on paper

But is there any evidence that's been the case, that people have increased their consumption?

Anecdotally, I can't think of anyone I know that hasn't actively reduced their usage

butler14··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
This is a particularly cynical view from someone privileged enough to be able to afford solar panels.

I have panels too. But I also have friends that can't pay their energy bill this month.

butler14··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
These are new to me. Would you mind elaborating on why these specifically, rather than conventional LIon?
butler14··on Military unable to determine how the objects were kept aloft
That's some random bloke with an enthusiasm for keto diets writing as a contributor on Forbes, not an actual Forbes journalist, just in case anyone was wondering
butler14··on Important Advice for Creatives from the Richest Person in the World
Establishing product-market-fit is part of marketing.

I think you're confusing marketing and advertising.

butler14··on US jet shoots down unknown object flying off Alaska coast
You know parts of Scandinavia are protected by the UK, right?
butler14··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
You think Erdogan blocked Twitter, because of stories about Ukrainian refugees hoarding supplies intended for earthquake victims?

And you believe this so much you posted it on a burner account?

Seems legit

butler14··on ChatGPT is a data privacy nightmare
what makes you think search advertising will go away?

e.g. that conversational or generative AI will replace, rather than augment, traditional web search?

butler14··on Gen Z Netiquettes
Logged in to say the same; all of these have ultimately formed back in IRC days and have aged remarkably well since

The only one that is new (and therefore annoying to me as an Old Internet Man) is the insistance of adding emojis into every sentence

For a while I could guess someones approximate age because of it, but now some of my 40+ friends have started emojiing like a 14 year olds too

butler14··on Ask HN: Good resources to become financially literate
Kind of presumptuous, could be in buy to let property?

You’re basically saying everyone should spend everything in a downtown, and if they don’t they are boring?

butler14··on Eggs are 60% more expensive than last year in the US
Uk data for comparison

butler14··on MacBook owners have two months to claim up to $395 over butterfly keyboard woes
Any chance of being able to do similar in the UK? e.g. is there likely to be me-too legal action in the UK/EU?
butler14··on You don't need live chat on your website
i am actually not sure if amazon have live-human-chat behind the chatbot, as, in fairness, the chatbot usually sorts out our issue (often very quickly)

i presume they do, though, and i wouldn't be surprised if it's not so great!

butler14··on You don't need live chat on your website
Shout out to supermetrics.com who have great live chat, and almost always resolve my issue within 5mins

And relatedly amazon who actually have a useful chatbot (i don't have much positive to say about amazon these days but 1 click purchase and chatbot implementation is still very strong)

butler14··on Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests?
I’m glad someone said it. One random chap on twitter is hardly a reliable source.
