burke_holland··on NYC pilot tries mental health responders in place of police
I think it’s more like if you are a first responder, the math tells you whomever you are dealing with has a gun. That changes the dynamic entirely.
burke_holland··on HomePod Mini
Yes, but Siri
burke_holland··on Pringles tube tries to wake from 'recycling nightmare'
Given that most recycling ends up in landfills anyway, I’m not sure it matters much. We have a much bigger recycling problem.

burke_holland··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
Just to be clear, the government literally does lie to you about what’s in the water. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/flint...
burke_holland··on Do Not Trust Google
This is exactly the problem, though. By suppressing this stuff, they validate the narrative that “THEY don’t want you to know the truth” (whoever the hell they is). This stuff doesn’t go away. It just migrates to different platforms and every time it’s taken down it gains credibility among the faithful.

This is the current paradox that plagues us.

burke_holland··on Teen mastermind of Twitter hack was involved in fatal home invasion, say police
Seriously looking forward to this movie. Jessie Eisenberg maybe?

burke_holland··on US weekly jobless claims jump by 6.6M
It's possible that what we've found is that we can only intake around 7 million jobless claims per week. The number could be much higher, we just don't have the bandwidth to receive all the claims, so they continue to pile up.
burke_holland··on Coronavirus and Credibility
I had this same thought. Here's Pelosi encouraging people to come to Chinatown.

Also, we should be careful about how much we eviscerate people on both sides politically during this time. If our leaders are too afraid of repercussions to make difficult decisions, they may make bad decisions instead.

I'm calling for moratorium on partisan finger-pointing. I think we're all in this together, and that's the only way we're getting out of it.

burke_holland··on Clear backpacks, monitored emails: U.S. students under constant surveillance
The odds of being shot at school are incredibly low (~1 in 614,000,000), and have been falling since the 90's. It's just that when it does happen, it's so horrific that we cannot bear even the 1 because that 1 might be ours - myself included. That's ripe territory for companies to come in a make some good money on those mathematically irrational fears. The ones who suffer, though, are still the kids. While the likelihood of getting shot is lower than that of dying while simply traveling to school in the morning, the odds of being stressed and paranoid about it in school are now fairly significant.

Nothing drives an economy like fear.

burke_holland··on Hospitals pledge to fight admin price transparency plan in court
> Instead of helping patients know their out-of-pocket costs, this rule will introduce widespread confusion, accelerate anticompetitive behavior among health insurers, and stymie innovations in value-based care.

So people are too dumb to understand prices, and unlike any other economic system to ever succeed, knowing the value of a thing will DECREASE pricing competition.

I was waiting for the good argument on why this is a bad idea. Instead we got _that_.

burke_holland··on The decline in U.S. life expectancy is unlike anything seen in a century (2018)
This is exactly what I saw too. I'm surprised that obesity isn't up there with how Americans eat and our food culture. Food is as much a drug as actual drugs or alcohol. Don't I know it.

Edit - Obesity does contribute to liver deaths, so it's there.

burke_holland··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
It does seem that way. Which, I get it. That’s an easy target. I just think that kind of thing undermines the legitimate point this guy is making.
burke_holland··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
It only took 3 paragraphs for capitalism to end up under the bus. Which - sure. There’s much to dislike in the inhumanity of extreme consumerism. But that same consumerism has transformed that nation. Even the NYT has extolled the virtues of China’s rise.

“The world thought it would change China, but China’s success has been so spectacular that it has changed the world.”

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/18/world/asia/ch...

Yes. We should stop giving them a pass. Who is going to be first to give up their iPhone?

burke_holland··on Will America's debt doom us?
This is some SERIOUS misrepresentation of the facts. Just as an example: "One-third of the debt is money the government owes to itself". To itself? And whom might that be? Oh right, THAT'S US.

That money is owed to the people, and they're probably doing to need it. Especially considering that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid account for 36% of the federal budget - which is....let me do the math - one third.

burke_holland··on The Long Road to the Student Debt Crisis
Interesting that there is no mention here of the drastically inflated number of administrators in colleges as compared to say 30 years ago.

burke_holland··on Owning nothing is now a luxury, thanks to a number of subscription startups
This is exactly what I thought of when I read this article. Rent-A-Center has been doing this for longer than I've been alive.
burke_holland··on Show HN: The Urlist – Group links together and share them with a custom URL
I had the idea after giving a presentation and trying to give people a bunch of resources at the end where they could go learn more. I was putting a bunch of links on a slide and then people would take a photo of the slide with their phone. I felt like nobody was going to go home and type in URL's from some grainy phone picture. I know I wouldn't. I wanted one simple URL I could give people to point to all of my resources.

Have you tried NativeScript on Windows?
burke_holland··on Angular 2 Beta released
As a plugin for the NativeScript runtime. Check this video from Angular Connect which goes over exactly how it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SbiiyRSIwo
burke_holland··on How I came to love Typescript
Usually reflection gets used to project ORM classes onto data transfer objects. That's an unsolved problem and the struggle is real.
burke_holland··on How I came to love Typescript
What I meant is, typed systems force you to rigidly define your data structures. I cannot tell you how many times I saw sealed modules that didn't account for null types and eventually they were used with databases that did.

The more rigid your interfaces are, the more brittle your system is. There has to be some amount of flexibility to account for real life use.

burke_holland··on Requiring vs. Browserifying Angular
Somebody commented about ASP.NET MVC having a bundler that you can just point at a directory. Seems like that would be enough to do it and you wouldn't need CommonJS or AMD.
burke_holland··on Requiring vs. Browserifying Angular
I'm starting to think that module systems on Angular's modules is a bad idea. Maybe I'm overthinking this. Should we just grunt-concat (or whatever Gulp does) and move on with life?
burke_holland··on The Tyranny Of Web Standards
Standards are a necessary tax, just like process. If everyone could just get in a room and do the right thing, we wouldn't have any issues. Any time you throw a governing body at anything, you are going to have a certain amount of inefficiency.
burke_holland··on Show HN: a better visual admin for redis
Nice! Geez and finally.
burke_holland··on Python Requests: HTTP for Humans
I think it's fine for simple scenarios (i.e. plain GET), but it breaks down in a hurry and the fact that you have to read out of the response stream is real overhead.
