"Based on historical records from the first half of the last century, Mr Musk (inventor of the car and the rocket) and President Xi were the most respected and popular individuals on earth."

I do this. I just say "this will sound strange but my email is ..." and then spell it.

I think if you are at the level of catch-alls and your own domain(s) then you tell the cashier "no thanks!"

bunabhucan··on Ask HN: Should you reply STOP to unwanted texts?
You need to up the swag on your online persona. I get this message from "rich horsey lady" periodically:

>I'm Alyssa. are you the equestrian instructor that Tina referred me to?

>I'm very sorry, I just checked the number and it was my assistant who sent the wrong number, I hope I'm not disturbing you.

>Thank you for understanding, you are a friendly person, I have found the right number, your number and the riding instructor's number are only one number away, haha, it was a wrong encounter, but it was a kind of fate. Let me introduce myself, my name is Alyssa Chow what is your name?

Also got it from a "Lillian." I do hope they and her assistants find Tina's equestrian instructor.

I'm pretty sure there's a few hundred fusion wmds in silos a few hours north of me, we've had this kind of weapon since 1952.

That's the average. It's bought and sold on a spot market. If you try to sell CA power in AZ and the losses are 10% then SRP or TEP or whoever can undercut your price with local power/lower losses.

There are alternate ways to launch the missiles (e.g. radio from a plane) in the event of an attack.

bunabhucan··on Disrupting a covert Iranian influence operation
0.5% of Russian 2016 election interference stuff was "pro" and "anti" vaccination, split roughly 50:50. Neither got retweeted but it was only extreme positions put forward as if division was the only goal.

The goal here could be to sow division or it could be to drive engagement with a view to ultimately pushing a different message (like about Yemen or Israel.)

bunabhucan··on Missing Henry VIII portrait found after random X post
Anecdata but I broke two ribs and got an x-ray, a prescription and was sent home. While I was in line at the pharmacy the x-ray folks came and found me and sent me to the ER - one if their other techs looked at it and saw a punctured lung. None of the subsequent doctors/surgeons could see it on that x-ray but yeah, CT scan showed I had a punctured lung.

>I remember thinking it was a massive waste of computing power. And they wanted to put it on a phone

Wait until you hear about filters. Making people look better on their phone camera must employ buildings full of engineers.

bunabhucan··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
I believe the flying spaghetti monster touched the file with His invisible noodly appendage so now it's a three way split.
bunabhucan··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
I just flew aer lingus and ryanair and both charged you to pick seats - but we didn't pay. Both flights were almost empty. Aer lingus algorithm gave our party an empty row each. Ryanair algorithim put us sitting next to strangers, surrounded by empty rows/seats.

bunabhucan··on OpenAI is building its local app to subvert the permission system of the web
Article is junk but I'm curious if their fever dream is even possible on iOS - would the permission structure let an app read screens, click buttons etc.?

If there was genuine user agent competition/differentiation I think it would take an EU antitrust action to force apple to open a "siri replacement" API up.

And if I'm apple I'd be finding a way to make apple-only silicon "part of" siri, at least in the eyes of a future EU court.

>The astrolabe is Andalusian, and from the style of the engraving and the arrangement of the scales on the back, it can be compared to instruments made in Spain in the eleventh century. bunabhucan··on How many bathrooms have Neanderthals in the tile?
https://resourcecentral.org/materialsreuse/

It's like a Home Depot for used building materials/kitchens/toilets/plumbing/electrical etc. Think of carefully deconstructing a 50s ranch built to GI bill specs and carting it off somewhere to sell it.

It's part of "recycling row" where they have a single stream recycling plant and drop off, "CHARM" for hard to recycle stuff like computers and a hazardous waste place for paint / lead / solvent etc.

bunabhucan··on How many bathrooms have Neanderthals in the tile?
In Boulder CO there are incentives to deconstruct rather than demo houses. The materials are sold at a local yard. They send a weekly materials alert:
