bullfightonmars··on Hospitals owned by private equity are harming patients, reports find
Ban non-profit hospitals all together.
bullfightonmars··on Are roads the biggest driver of ecological destruction?
There are 2 billion parking spots in the US, enough to pave over the state of Connecticut.
bullfightonmars··on A 1690s Peanut is Reborn
I did too! Two years ago there was an article about Carolina Gold and I ordered from Anson Mills. I really enjoyed the aged/laurel brown rice. It has a deep fragrant flavor, great texture and was very good in baked rice dishes.
bullfightonmars··on How the creator of Alone in the Dark came back to games
I never played Alone in the Dark, but I loved Twinsen’s Little Big Adventure.
bullfightonmars··on Early Europeans ate seaweed for thousands of years
This is something I really miss now that I don’t live in NL. I have found it along the coast in Washington, but almost never for sale.
bullfightonmars··on Many scientists don’t want to tell the truth about climate change. Here’s why
From what I can tell the dominant christian religions in the US have turned into death cults seeking to accelerate suffering and death. I don’t think there is any salvation to be had there.
bullfightonmars··on Many scientists don’t want to tell the truth about climate change. Here’s why
Vote for politicians who support carbon taxes and investing in climate resilience and infrastructure.

You can’t prepare for this as an individual. This is a global societal problem. The effects of climate change are predictable on a global scale but much less so on a local scale.

bullfightonmars··on Text editing on mobile: the invisible problem
I have been using this sine iphone 6/3d touch era and it is ok, but has gotten worse.

1. The space bar is a much smaller target than the original whole keyboard and I often find myself needing multiple press drags.

2. Something changed recently and it is harder to hit your placement target in text especially in single line inputs. When this happens your cursor ends up back where it was or at the start of the line. It is particularly difficult to edit or select a url in the safari menu bar.

Note: I used the space bar cursor placement at least 5 times writing this. It would have been much more difficult without.

bullfightonmars··on “Stop Making Sense” is having a theatrical rerelease
Don’t sleep on Little Creatures. That and Remain in Light have been my gotos for TH. I have also been deeply taken by David Byrne’s solo albums Growm Backwards and Everything that Happens have some really great tracks.
bullfightonmars··on iOS 17 is available today
Gosh, I would love to re-map that combo. My photo album fills up with accidental screenshots, which I pretty much _never_ want.
bullfightonmars··on Why Did a Drug Gang Kill 43 Students? Text Messages Hold Clues
Is that a tactical advantage? That dichotomy didn’t work out so well in the middle east.
bullfightonmars··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
Well in reality stay at home parents are engaged in unpaid employment that is completely unrecognized (or recognized as Not in Labor Force).
bullfightonmars··on Energy Jobs Have Increased in Nearly Every County in America
Why should energy, unlike any other service or industry, require no labor to provide
bullfightonmars··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
> most of the country

The negative effects of vehicle size and dependence on infrastructure and society are intimately tied to where people live.

> Urban areas make up only 3 percent of the entire land area of the country but are home to more than 80 percent of the population.

bullfightonmars··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
Why is the Montana strawman always an example here? Almost no one lives in Montana and no one cares about vehical sizes in Montana, except _maybe_ in Bozeman proper. Let it go, no one is talking about Montana or the Dakotas.
bullfightonmars··on We bailed out the banks but we’re not prepared to bail out the planet
Al Franken was sworn in July, 2009. Ted Kennedy died in August 2009. That narrow window intersecting with the August recess was the first leg of the super majority and then again from the end of September to January 2010 with Ted Kenney’s temp replacement.

The Democrats did mess up by not taking that 3-4 month window more seriously, but they thought they had Massachusetts in the bag.

bullfightonmars··on Scientists invent double-sided solar panel that generates way more electricity
The efficiency is most likely a measure of solar radiation striking the surface of the bottomside not the topside.
bullfightonmars··on Tesla has now installed over 500k Powerwalls
1. 100m to achieve what? 2. There are only around 82m single family houses in the United States.
bullfightonmars··on Flashing elements alienate users
This was the tipping point for me with the reddit app that caused me to move to Apollo. The Reddit app had been trending down in reading quality for years. I was already annoyed with all the awards cluttering up comments, but then they added flashing elements to comments and I noped out to Apollo.

If Apollo really goes away I don’t think I will come back, after 15 years of reading reddit, I have pretty much stopped reading it at all over the past few weeks.

bullfightonmars··on React to LiveView for Performance [audio]
Wow. This paper is _very_ well written. I am not an expert in neural networks, but the concepts were very well described and diagramed and I was able to follow along.

I would read a whole book about neural networks written in this style.

bullfightonmars··on Police got called to an overcrowded presentation on “rejuvenation” technology
Check out the wipr plugin. It does a pretty good job of blocking popups and ads on ios safari.
bullfightonmars··on Elixir's “Set Theoretical Type System” prototype/demo/showcase
This talk is great and Giuseppe delivers it well. I'm really impressed with the expressiveness of the type system they have designed. Describing types as sets with predicate logic reads very clearly.

I was particularly impressed with the Exahustivity and redundancy in pattern matching, using the type to inform you when you have failed to fulfill the type contract across multiple expressions is _very_ clever and yet very easy to understand. This feels very much like the type of feedback I would expect from elixir when writing.

bullfightonmars··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
The will have to make presence _really_ good for this to be worthwhile. The closest thing I have seen to next level is Google's Project Starline [1]. I would spend so much money to get one of these for my home and one for my parent's home halfway across the country.

bullfightonmars··on US may default on debt as soon as June 1, Yellen reaffirms
...until taxes are raised to an appropriate level to cover expenditures?
bullfightonmars··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
This is the way. Building out dedicated bike infrastructure in cities will come at a fraction of the cost of any other investments and provide for a transit mode that suffers from none of these problems.
bullfightonmars··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
> Just like daddy puts in his drink every morning ... and then he gets mad.
bullfightonmars··on Two Approaches to Decoupling
This sounds similar to what the Phoenix team has done with LiveView. Is it a flavor of the same idea or are there other concepts I am missing. Can this also be rendered/hydrated by the server?
bullfightonmars··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
I think this is mostly a design problem for Carplay to solve support for dial and button controls could be much better.
bullfightonmars··on $60/MWh for advanced nuclear electricity is achievable: GE Hitachi Executive
It's also irrelevant. Cost of maintenance and service lifetime are built into the price/MWh.
bullfightonmars··on Dragonfly Is Production Ready (and we raised $21M)
> it's worth noting that if we were to reduce Dragonfly's throughput to match that of Redis, Dragonfly would have much lower P99 latency than Redis

It sounds like this is a function of higher throughput in the benchmark for Dragonfly.
