bullfightonmars··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
The Renault 5 looks great and has a solid price point for entry. I was this was available in the US. I think it would do quite well here at the < 30k price point.
bullfightonmars··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
This isn’t just about registration. It’s about sales tax.
bullfightonmars··on Tiny Brutalism
what a cool building! It definitely looks like it would be fun for nerf wars.
bullfightonmars··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
I was surprised last week to find that Spotify has turned in to full on social media/youtube now.

I left Spotify off of screentime limits for my son so that he could listen to music or books at bedtime, and found him watching "podcasts" which have full youtube style pages with videos and comments.

The number one thing I want to use it for is opening folders eg Downloads. It has such a hard time ever recommending the right thing.
bullfightonmars··on Homebrew 7.0.0
I migrated our monorepo to use mise with bootstrap and mise-tasks. I was able to delete a whole heap of setup scripts and our brewfile. First time setup is extremely simple now and re-running for updates is blazing fast.

mise has been an absolute delight.

> Sometime the sun goes away for more than 4hrs.

everywhere? all at once? The grid is distributed, this is a solved problem. Most of what is needed now is to build the systems, storage, and transmission lines.

First off, this is very cool, I love these kind of breakdowns from first principal.

This is sending me :)

> One cup of water becomes roughly 400 litres of steam, enough to fill two bathtubs

Three units of measurement in one sentence, my favorite unit is bathtubs.

bullfightonmars··on DEA to Temporarily Schedule 7-Oh and Related Substances to Protect Public Safety
Then what happened?

Better regulation, better enforcement, anti-smoking advertising campaigns, banning public smoking, and drastically reduced amongst youth and the general public.

Cigarette regulation to reduce smoking starting in the mid/late 90s is the poster child for public policy done well.

I use rails because it makes thousands of good choices that I never have to make. If build apps the rails way I don't have to deal with a mountain of tech debt (in the form bad or ever changing choices).

bullfightonmars··on Empty Screenings – Finds AMC movie screenings with few or no tickets sold
yes! I want the opposite. Packed screenings. There are some movies, especially summer blockbusters, that I want to see in a full room.

You can't throw money at software and get better software on the other side, see Meta(verse). Better software requires focus, which may mean spending less money instead of more.
bullfightonmars··on Britain today generating 90%+ of electricity from renewables
Are you saying that they don’t let rate payers take advantage of low rates to advantage load shift?

That seems counterproductive and exploitative.

bullfightonmars··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
Have you read about _where_ the budget is going? You are complaining about accountability without offering a diagnosis or showing any understanding for what is actually happening.

The budget expansion is almost entirely by medicaide.

Looking at 2019-2023

* Human Services: +~50% nominal → ~+22% real — biggest absolute dollar growth, driven almost entirely by Medicaid expansion and COVID enrollment

* K-12: +23% nominal → ~0% real — flat in purchasing power

* Higher Education: +~20% nominal → ~-2% real — slight real decline

* Government Operations: +~30% nominal → ~+6% real — modest real growth, headcount/compensation driven

* Natural Resources: +~25% nominal → ~+2% real — roughly flat

* Total Budget: +43.5% nominal → ~+17% real

bullfightonmars··on Americans are destroying Flock surveillance cameras
This is ahistoric. No-one ever said we had to "just vote for Obama" to close Guantanamo Bay.

Frankly, Obama _tried_ to close Guantanamo Bay. He significantly shrunk the population of inmates, but it was ultimately Congress, and the courts that prevented the closure

Obama spent a huge amount of time and political capital trying to clean up Bush's messes.

bullfightonmars··on Bugs Apple loves
Ugh this is the worst. It’s topped by password fields that don’t work with a password manager.
bullfightonmars··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars

bullfightonmars··on 'Source available' is not open source, and that's okay
In the case of Fizzy, the app that 37signals has made “source available”, the real motivation for publishing is form of advertising for Ruby on Rails.

DHH is on a mission to show that you can write great software with way less bullshit than is in vogue.

This code base is sparkling in its design. No build frontend, server side rendered templates, minimal js used primarily to drive interactivity, extremely simple models, jobs, and controllers.

It has < 3000 lines of js with incredibly rich interaction design, when was the last time you saw that?

Putting the motor into the wheel makes for an excellent riding experience, I have a Bionx rear wheel (out of business) that is connected to the chain ring and pedals in the traditional way. The wheel detects torque from pedaling and applies it's own torque to drive the wheel. It can be used with and without power and feels almost seamless and is silent.

Unfortunately it seems to be difficult to engineer and build these wheel motors for reliability and longevity. They significanly increase the unsprung mass of the wheel which leads to increased wear on the hub components.

bullfightonmars··on The road that killed Legend Jenkins was working as designed
It would be a very angry rant, after living in NL for a few years and absorbing how good infrastructure can be, he can barely stand this stuff.
bullfightonmars··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
What else could it be? Elected institutions are made up of people who agree to a laws, rules, and norms that everyone else agrees on. It's all a farce built up on agreements to keep things running smoothly.

There is no system you could structure rigidly enough that it would not be vulnerable to bad actors. You can insulate yourself by distributing authority as we have, but if those authorities stop playing following the laws, rules, and norms well you end up where we are at, devolving into facisim.

bullfightonmars··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
You are right of course. I was being flip. There are multiple reasons it is no longer profitable for car companies to make small trucks. CAFE regs are part of that.
bullfightonmars··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
The same reason housing isn't being built, it was regulated out of existence.

Oh wow. I am realizing I have just been living with these bugs as tiny frustrations all day long not understanding how pervasive they are!

This issue with spotlight is so bad. I use the switcher to pull up my Downloads or Documents directories and half the time it can’t even find them!
