bullfightonmars··on RubyLLM: A delightful Ruby way to work with AI
Github is still rails, but they have layered in some react to the UIs, like the file explorer.

It all seems pretty negative value to me though it’s terribly slow.

bullfightonmars··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
The presidency is not a monarchy! The president might be commander-in-chief but it can’t just order random people killed just because he is “in charge” of the military. There are laws and layers of control saying who can do what. These laws are on the books and are being completely ignored!

Most of this power is vested in congress whom is abdicating their power.

bullfightonmars··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
1. I'm not convinced by this argument, airlines compete on list price. If they can add a bunch of fees after winning on list price, they can move more and more of their costs into the fees and are no longer competing on the real price.

2. Let airlines compete on transparent pricing. I think this alone is enough of a benefit to this move.

bullfightonmars··on Euphemisms are best changed frequently (2016)
George Carlin has a great bit on euphemism where he makes the case that euphemisms are used to soften the meaning of things that are painful to the point of being meaningless, e.g. shellshock -> ptsd

The author of this article pointed our some similar examples: welfare -> cash assistance -> TANF.

bullfightonmars··on NoTunes is a macOS application that will prevent Apple Music from launching
This isn’t an Apple Music thing. It’s an app stealing audio focus and them requiring you to manually revert back to what you were listening to previously.
bullfightonmars··on Scientists Find an 'Alphabet' in Whale Songs
A scientist would assert we have no evidence that they this is a language, but here is what we do know. Here is how it is like a language here is how it is not like a language, this is what we need to measure/prove that it is a language.
bullfightonmars··on Scientists Find an 'Alphabet' in Whale Songs
Defining an experimental and null hypothesis and measurably testing that hypothesis is how science is advanced.

A claim is an assertion of fact. Science doesn’t make unproven claims. It tests them.

bullfightonmars··on Brain Uses Quantum Effects, New Study Finds [video]
Not at all! There is evidence of quantum effects in the light harvesting complexes in chlorophyll that operate at ambient temperatures. This appears to be a key element to the efficiency of guiding photons to the photosystem.
bullfightonmars··on Selling 'Ghost in the Shell'
I’m sorry! I totally mistook Re:Zero for another series!

It looks like it has good reviews. I’ll have to check it out.

bullfightonmars··on Scientists Find an 'Alphabet' in Whale Songs
I think the whole point/perspective of science is that claims have to be provable with evidence. Scientists don’t make claims without evidence.

I am sure that there were a lot of preconceived biases that blocked scientific research from occurring in this space, but it might also be that we didn’t have the tools to examine evidence until recently.

Scientists are generally very curious, open to exploration, and absolutely want to prove the unproven or refute the previously proven with new evidence. It’s how they make their stamp in their field.

bullfightonmars··on Selling 'Ghost in the Shell'
I didn’t get SAC back when it was on Adult Swim. Seeing it randomly and out of order it seemed stale, slow, and too dense. But watched in sequence it is a fantastic bit of scifi.
bullfightonmars··on Selling 'Ghost in the Shell'
Ha. Stuff like this is entertaining but it is not what I would call good. It’s like the reality tv of anime. Cheap wish fulfillment fan service.

There have been some legit good series recently that play with these fantasy genres, have solid writing and animation.

* Friern: Beyond Journey’s End - an extremely sentimental coming of age tale that explorers children raising parents, loyalty, and platonic love.

* Delicious in Dungeon - a really silly story that subverts the dungeon crawling genre by crossing over with the food/cooking genre and playing with all kinds of genre/tropes.

* Pluto - a classic scifi morality tale on what it means to be human. This series tried really hard to be a modern Ghost in the Shell. It was successful in some ways and fell flat in others. Definitely worth watching though.

There are lots of entertaining anime out now, but so little of it is well made or written. Maybe that’s ok though. I still watch lots of the low quality stuff because it’s like popcorn/candy and is easy to watch.

bullfightonmars··on FCC votes to restore net neutrality rules
This is the tyranny of minority rule. When congress is not representative of the electorate and the minority doesn’t have to compromise to get things done to gain political favor and power, nothing gets done.
bullfightonmars··on Ruby might be faster than you think
It’s not even that rails is necessarily slow, it’s more the way you use it that is slow. If you tie all your businesses logic to the database and commit complicated changes in transactions, sure it will be terribly slow.
bullfightonmars··on FTC announces rule banning noncompetes
> Instead, under the final rule, employers will simply have to provide notice to workers bound to an existing noncompete that the noncompete agreement will not be enforced against them in the future. To aid employers’ compliance with this requirement, the Commission has included model language in the final rule that employers can use to communicate to workers.

> Under the final rule, existing noncompetes for senior executives can remain in force. Employers, however, are prohibited from entering into or enforcing new noncompetes with senior executives. The final rule defines senior executives as workers earning more than $151,164 annually and who are in policy-making positions.

> The final rule will become effective 120 days after publication in the Federal Register.

bullfightonmars··on FAA now requires reentry vehicles to get licensed before launch
Feel free to develop, launch, and land your rockets without any tax sponsored infrastructure, educated employees, managed airspace, or you know direct sponsorship to develop and purchase launch services.
bullfightonmars··on Distributed Authorization
Yes! My team came to the same conclusion and are in the process of building just such a library for our platform.

- Actor - who is performing an action

- Policy - what types of possible actions are permitted on a resource for a type of actor

- Permission - actions an actor has been granted to perform.

With the intersection of these three objects you can determine if an action can be performed and actors can be granted granular access.

bullfightonmars··on I discovered a critical exploit in ZeroMQ with mostly pure luck
Different definitions of lazy.

* lazy - wants do as little work in the future as possible and so spends extra time now solving the problem the right way.

* lazy - has no consideration for the future and takes a straight line path to solving the problem now. Spends all future time fixing problems created from this approach.

bullfightonmars··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Ha. That’s not the story I have heard from greybeard engineers there before and after the merger.

I got the story that Stonecipher wrecked the engineering culture and valued/promoted management at the expense of engineering. Management becoming the only path to promotion and career advancement leaving important engineering groups hollowed out.

bullfightonmars··on The new Windows update made me think I'd installed malware
Agreed. Password prompting for installs on macos needs a lot of love. It’s really encouraging users to become comfortable with potentially dangerous behavior.
bullfightonmars··on Elon Musk Has a Giant Charity. Its Money Stays Close to Home
Doing good is not required to be a nonprofit.
bullfightonmars··on Elon Musk Has a Giant Charity. Its Money Stays Close to Home
Non-profits were always a tax dodge designed to provide tax shelters for the wealthy to influence society, democracy, education, etc.
bullfightonmars··on The First Dune Game 32 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective [video]
This is the version I remember!
bullfightonmars··on The First Dune Game 32 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective [video]
This was my first introduction to Dune. In 93 I was in 3rd grade and this game blew me away. The weird politics and characters. The desert sands and worms. The flying ornithopters and sietches and Fremen.

I never made it too far in to the game, I would always get lost with some of the strategy in trying to mine spice or I would drink the water of life and die or lose fighting the Harkonen.

More than anything I loved it for it’s world building, atmosphere and exploration of a strange world.

bullfightonmars··on Heinz’s sustainable ketchup cap
That’s a fair point reusable containers are a great candidate for replacement with glass. You are right overall though we definitely seem to be polluting our environment with plastics that will never go away.
bullfightonmars··on Bookish Diversions: Do Audiobooks Count?
I think some people have an ear for listening to books and others don’t. My wife is the same as you, but I can totally synchronize my mind with an audiobook and enter a flow state. I also really appreciate the task stacking the author describes it helps me stay on task with monotonous chores.

I think the most surprising thing for me is that I see/imagine the same images and have the same feelings when reading a book and when listening to that same book.

bullfightonmars··on Heinz’s sustainable ketchup cap
Do bottles shed microplastics?

Manufacturer > store > pantry > garbage can > dump.

Isn’t the majority of this buried in the ground in dumps that are sealed off from groundwater?

I suspect our clothes, cars/tires, houses, and other things that live outside contribute more to microplastics than food containers.

bullfightonmars··on How the media industry keeps losing the future
It doesn’t help that the outfits that are profitable have been strip mined by private equity.
bullfightonmars··on Amazon argues that national labor board is unconstitutional
Time to find corporations unconstitutional?
bullfightonmars··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
I did the same this past thing, the best part about it is the reduction in cost for heating from 300+/mo to ~25/mo, The downside is that it was terribly expensive to install, it ran me 40k to install the new heat pump and air handler.
