buggeryorkshire··on 9p filesystem has been added to FreeBSD
Good Lord this brings back bad memories - I used 9p around 7 years ago for a secure government system, it was horrific. I did report the bug, with all the details etc, but it was basically unmaintained. IIRC the issue was it was using up file handles under pressure to a point where the host died.

It's a great idea but really hope it's better now.

buggeryorkshire··on How to get stuff repaired when the manufacturer don't wanna: take 'em to court
Did the same years ago in the UK with an iPod. Was like a week out of the warranty, I tried to argue it was a premium device - nope, denied.

Did a claim with MCOL, they waited until the day of the hearing to pony up what I was claiming for, with interest. In the UK the individual gets to choose the venue with MCOL, so they'd have had to send a lawyer to Cheltenham to contest it.

buggeryorkshire··on 270GB of source code from The New York Times leaked to 4Chan

Fuck

buggeryorkshire··on Bank Rescinds a Job Offer Because It Had Cancelled the Candidate's Credit Cards
I contracted at a UK bank around 1999.

Didn't affect me but the permanent members of staff had to maintain an account with said bank. If they went over their overdraft, or had unpaid direct debits, it was flagged to their manager who took their card off them until it was settled.

buggeryorkshire··on Turns out Spotify can't open-source Car Thing because it's a potato
God that brings back memories, thank you!
buggeryorkshire··on Costco is building out an ad business using its shoppers' data
I love Costco here in the UK, but they don't do tech.

AFAICT their Android app is just an awfully implemented webview, I can't change the email address associated with the account, they can't link purchases made with my card in-store to those on the website, the list goes on.

buggeryorkshire··on It looks a lot like VMware just lost a 24,000-VM customer
Yep. They're not a must read like they were then, and like Computer Weekly were in the 90s, but I'm still glad they're around to provide slight balance to all the regurgitated press releases.

Mike McGee was a legend.

buggeryorkshire··on It looks a lot like VMware just lost a 24,000-VM customer
Exactly. I do not know how what is happening with VMware didn't happen to Oracle years ago, apart from them being a legal firm with a tech product attached.
buggeryorkshire··on The Worst Website in the Entire World
Reminds me of Lings Cars which is actually awesome https://www.lingscars.com/
buggeryorkshire··on Most dating apps sell and share users' personal data
Great idea, but for the love of Dog please correct the spelling errors on that homepage - I counted 4 without even trying.
buggeryorkshire··on There’s a 30-year old dead Rabbit in Seven Sisters tube station
I worked for a competitor to RR (Visionhire) when a teenager, BSkyB had started the first satellite TV series in the UK. Nobody wanted to buy it (why would I need more than 4 TV channels?) so they gave it free, including installation, for 6 months before charging money. Unfortunately so many people wanted to cancel after the 6 months there was a huge backlog waiting to get somebody to take the dish down.

People were unbelievable angry, I worked in the callcentre and we'd have people turning up threatening to kill us, others sent us boxes full of literal shit. Not the greatest job ever.

buggeryorkshire··on There’s a 30-year old dead Rabbit in Seven Sisters tube station
IIRC, this was the first attempt by Hutchison Whampoa, a big Hong Kong company, to enter the UK. They gave up on this and eventually started Three, who are now one of the biggest mobile networks in the UK.

I remember them trying to sell Rabbit when I was a kid, and even I was bemused. Why would I want to stand outside a hotspot in a shop when I could use a phone booth?

buggeryorkshire··on Total eclipse of the Internet: traffic impacts in Mexico, the US, and Canada
Nice. Ramadan / Eid is difficult as it varies so you can't put up an accurate notice earlier for on-call engineers.
buggeryorkshire··on Total eclipse of the Internet: traffic impacts in Mexico, the US, and Canada
Reminds me of the first lockdown in the UK - I was on-call for a major food delivery service. We all went out at 7pm to clap for the NHS (which my NHS working family hated), and PagerDuty went off.

Went inside, apparently UK traffic had dropped by 20%. People from around the world were trying to work out why.

"Er, it's because we all put our phones down to clap for the nurses..."

buggeryorkshire··on Show HN: Kyoo – Self-hosted media browser (Jellyfin/Plex alternative)
Had exactly the same issue. Jellyfish was very opinionated, Plex doesn't care.
buggeryorkshire··on Plunging Pickup Truck Sales Threaten Detroit's Profit Engine
Their point is that when they try and trade in their 3 year old truck which they got a low interest rate for a new one, not only is their truck worth bugger-all to trade in but their next interest rate will probably be doubled or more.

Hence they'll stick with their current one so one less sale.

buggeryorkshire··on Yahoo is buying Artifact, the AI news app from the Instagram co-founders
That's artifact dead, then.
buggeryorkshire··on BYD Rolls Off Its 7Mth New Energy Vehicle
No idea about BYD, but MG are all over, especially among the older crowd who remember them being built (badly) in Birmingham.
buggeryorkshire··on Flipping Pages: New Linux vulnerability in nf_tables and exploitation techniques
Thank you, appreciated.
buggeryorkshire··on Flipping Pages: New Linux vulnerability in nf_tables and exploitation techniques
They pay more than that in certain parts of the UK and US - didn't do it myself, but know people who did and they were definitely in demand.
buggeryorkshire··on Google Jamboard is winding down
I just started a new job, and am amazed that even though being the sort of company that don't like spending money, like the previous 3 they have GW and Slack.

Does anybody at Google do anything other than throw stuff over the wall then move on?

buggeryorkshire··on Ask HN: What's behind all the UK IT failures this month?
Just Eat went down Friday, too...
buggeryorkshire··on Ask HN: What's behind all the UK IT failures this month?
Pukka Pies can pissoff!
buggeryorkshire··on How did the viral Willy Wonka experience go so wrong?
Each year there's at least one 'winter wonderland' where the only entertainment is watching underpaid Elves smoking cigarettes behind a bin. It's a tradition at this point.
buggeryorkshire··on You almost never see a clock at the mall
Ha, it's the same artist who did both, TiL.
buggeryorkshire··on You almost never see a clock at the mall
I used to live in Cheltenham UK, and one of the malls there had this clock as a feature https://www.regentarcade.co.uk/LocalInformation
buggeryorkshire··on Work for you? Again? After you lied about the job and stole my stuff? No thanks
That experience jars with me, would love to know who it was.

Years ago I worked with a company that did the screens and compute for large bookmaker companies. Was in one of the client shops in London when a bomb went off.

They immediately changed the screens with the news on and I got a call from my boss stating under no circumstances should I mention a bomb went off half a mile from the shop I was in. Can't stop the revenue...

buggeryorkshire··on Expanding Our Partnership with Google
Exactly! Reddit can fuck off.
buggeryorkshire··on Walmart buying TV-brand Vizio for its ad-fueling customer data
I've heard this too, but never seen a shred of evidence. Do you know of any?
buggeryorkshire··on Deliveroo and Uber Eats Riders Strike on Valentine's Day
I left the company last April, but was there 5 years. It is definitely one of the busiest days on the calendar, along with New Year's Day, in the UK anyway.
