buggeryorkshire··on iPhone users can now set WhatsApp as their default calling and texting app
Because it's the best option I've seen and it's one they haven't ruined?
buggeryorkshire··on DoorDash Offering Payment Plans for Food Delivery Sparks Backlash
Many years ago (80s) in the UK I remember my family and others had milk tokens to get formula milk or whatever. Each local convenience store used to exchange them for booze or cigs, at a high conversion rate obviously.
buggeryorkshire··on Stellar Blockchain Accounts
Would it be a hardship to actually explain why we'd care about some random blockchain nonsense?
buggeryorkshire··on Bringing On-Chain Data to AI Agents with SQD and ElizaOS
(tl;dr - nobody cares)
buggeryorkshire··on Bringing On-Chain Data to AI Agents with SQD and ElizaOS
It's literally word soup even to seasoned nerds like myself that have been doing this for decades. Who cares?
buggeryorkshire··on I set my phone to 'do not disturb' three years ago – and have never looked back
I'm in the UK. After an update yesterday it was asking me to enable it on my M1 Mac
buggeryorkshire··on I bought a container full of Chinese electric excavators. Here's what showed up
really?
buggeryorkshire··on Demand for Starlink in Zimbabwe is overwhelming capacity
Good point about multicast - BT use it in the UK on their fibre/ADSL network to deliver live TV to their set-top boxes. I have never understood why it's not supported cross-ISP.
buggeryorkshire··on ESIM Adapter
I have one, in the glinet router i've got in our motorhome. It's fantastic - UX is shit for adding a new eSim (need to take a pic of the QR code) but once it's working it's great.

No idea why it needs an adaptor though - assume it's some buggery around being not a phone.

buggeryorkshire··on FlutterFlash - Ship your next Flutter app, at lightning speed
Nothing about pricing?
buggeryorkshire··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
I'd say a lot more but people from JET know me (fuck you, btw) but yeah it's depressing. People ordering the same pizza multiple times daily, for months.

I don't understand it personally but did get an insight a few years ago. I had to move out of my house whilst I was renovating it for 6 months or so. Looked at the cheapest place I could that was somewhere nice in my town. It was fine for a single man, but the kitchen - Jesus, once you stood in it you could reach every surface and cupboard from being there.

I couldn't believe how shit it was. The estate agent just said "that's how kids live these days - they eat out, or order in"

(it was a few years before lockdown)

buggeryorkshire··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
I didn't know about any layoffs as I don't really watch them, but am not surprised. Lots of overlap. I did check their careers page just now and there's hardly any tech roles in there so it does track.

Am still annoyed about the edict to return to the office, despite the data, when some people like myself had moved 200+ miles during lockdown. Extremely shitty behaviour, which is now being emulated by many other companies.

buggeryorkshire··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
Yeah. It was that time iirc when all similar companies were trying to get market share whilst their sales went through the roof due to lockdown.

I wonder whether the project started a couple of years ago to consolidate the systems of all the acquisitions has actually borne fruit?

buggeryorkshire··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
Ha! Hello, indeed.
buggeryorkshire··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
Worked for JET at the time of this acquisition, everybody I talked to at work about this thought the acquisition was nuts.
buggeryorkshire··on Practical guide for building a blockchain from scratch in Go
I'd rather learn how to rewrite Git in Go tbf, if only to explain Merkle Trees.

Isn't blockchain last years grift? It's all AI grifting, now.

buggeryorkshire··on Cheating alleged after men's world conker champion found with steel chestnut
I did that race twice, dislocated my left shoulder each time. Scariest thing i've ever done.

People have the misapprehension that you're supposed to catch the cheese. No idea why you'd think it's a good idea to catch a rock hard lump whilst running down a hill so fast that if you tense your legs once to slow down you do 3 cartwheels.

Also just remembered - they have local rugby players to catch those who can't stop running from hitting the fence of the house at the bottom. Saw at least one person they missed who smacked into the fence and got carted off by St John's Ambulance.

buggeryorkshire··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
Surprised this doesn't mention meticulous.ai, who seem to spam HN with "we're hiring!" each month but i've never heard of anybody using them, nor do LI show any new employees. Hey Gabriel, what's going on?
buggeryorkshire··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
Android 4? I had a 2017 Kia Ceed where I hacked the head unit, and I'm sure that was at least Android 6?
buggeryorkshire··on Court orders Google to uninstall pirate IPTV app sideloaded on Android devices
Yeah exactly, I can see Revanced supporting it
buggeryorkshire··on The Death of the Magazine
Ha, I used to work at WH Smith HQ in Swindon. The warehouse people used to nick the cover disks from the magazines and sell them. And each loo on each floor had a fresh new porn mag in the cistern!

Don't even get me on Tales of Farthing Wood which caused a national shitstorm...

buggeryorkshire··on Getting price-gouged by private equity in the UK's happiest resort (2023)
It's the only thing that wouldn't happen to you at Pontins!
buggeryorkshire··on Spray-foam insulation makes homes unable to be mortgaged
There were many dodgy schemes in the UK years ago ("free solar panels! cheap electricity!") where people didn't realise there was a mortgage on the panels for 30 years+ which was now in the deeds of the house and made mortgage companies back out, suspect it's exactly this.
buggeryorkshire··on Spray-foam insulation makes homes unable to be mortgaged
Iirc using closed cell foam, or open cell badly installed, either will stop moisture getting out, causing damp amongst other issues.
buggeryorkshire··on CrowdStrike offers a $10 apology gift card to say sorry for outage
Superb
buggeryorkshire··on Ask HN: Why is Meticulous (YC S21) still hiring to eliminate E2E tests?
In addition, I just searched for their URL on Google.

1st link - themselves, fair. 2nd - their limited company listing on Companies House 3rd - Vercel 4th - here 5th - Companies House again 6th - LinkedIn

Does anybody know somebody who works for, with them, or uses their services?

buggeryorkshire··on Ask HN: Why is Meticulous (YC S21) still hiring to eliminate E2E tests?
I was about to ask the same thing!

Posted regular as clockwork, same boilerplate, same tags to show the traffic came from HN.

But i've not seen any recruiter ever reach out to me about them, i've never heard about them in my tech circle.

I'm beginning to think Gabriel works by himself?

buggeryorkshire··on Hawaii home mistakenly built on Bay Area woman's land to be torn down
I do love the way you segue this into tech territory by pointing out it is indeed a classic off by 1 error. Bravo
buggeryorkshire··on [dead]
Nobody cares. It's last year's grift.
buggeryorkshire··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Amazing. Any chance of Top Hats as a premium upgrade?
