bsagdiyev··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
> No manual transmission car can be up/down shifted during track in / cornering / trackout without upsetting the car's balance; dual-clutch gearbox cars can be.

Speak for yourself, but I don't really have much of an issue shifting while going hot through a corner.

> And lastly, they can have more gears.

Why is this better? Fuel efficiency, sure, but are we going for a Fast and the Furious race scene shifting thing?

bsagdiyev··on Things people blamed on bicycles
This kinda feels like a no true Scotsman, if it walks quacks and flies like a duck it doesn't matter.

Edit: I say this a cyclist myself. I see other people on bikes do some dumb shit, we can't say they aren't real cyclists because they do something that makes us look bad.

bsagdiyev··on The erosion of the Mac experience
Which is not a stock macOS app. Which is what the point was. Stock macOS sucks with window and monitor management. I run three screens and it's aggravating sometimes.
bsagdiyev··on Resolving an unusual WiFi issue
Xfinity had a router that did not work with the Xbox One when it came out. Wired was fine but wireless just did not work. I believe a software update fixed it and I don't recall if it was the router or the Xbox that was ultimately the issue.

Fielded a lot of grumpy calls that Christmas morning.

bsagdiyev··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
Well what do you know, TIL. Thank you!
bsagdiyev··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
Since I cannot directly reply to you (ajconway) -- this is thoroughly untrue. Tesla does it at the very least and I'm aware that is becoming a "feature" offered in other vehicles now too.
bsagdiyev··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
It absolutely is not. I do not want my 2 ton moving vehicle updated on a whim. My 2019 has a screen I can never really turn off that is bright at night, my 2008 has a slow laggy UI that an update will never fix. The 2000 Miata sitting in my garage has the best interface of them all. Push buttons and dials for climate control, two window switches in the middle tombstone area and that's really it outside the typical steering wheel controls for signals, lights and windshield wipers. It's amazingly simple and should continue working even when my newer cars are dead and gone.
bsagdiyev··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
This frustrates me to no end in our family car. Even if I "turn it off", which turns off the radio, the screen still shows a clock over a globe and still glows. There is no escaping it.
bsagdiyev··on Google Fiber plans 5-state growth spurt, biggest since 2015
That depends on where you are. We're in a Ting area, no signs of Google Fiber here. Ting is still a bit out since our development isn't completely sold yet, so we're stuck with Spectrum until then.
bsagdiyev··on Kitsault, Canada’s $50M 1980s ghost town
So overrun with bears and falling apart?

bsagdiyev··on Former Republicans and Democrats to form new third U.S. political party
This is how I've always seen it as well, though I consider myself independent.

It's funny the issues you mention are commonly held by quite a few people I know, myself included. "Why can't the gay couple up the street get married, while smoking weed and shooting off some rifles?" is how I describe my views.

I've definitely noticed that the amount of people I meet with views like that have been a little rarer lately.

bsagdiyev··on Arizona Mom Fights Abusive Prosecution by Department of Child Safety
By what metric? This is a normal everyday thing in some countries. I was running to the corner store and grabbing milk, cheese or beer, among other groceries, when I was under 10. This was Spain in the 80s/90s and afaik is still a thing. Or walking clear across town to hang out with friends or go to school. In what way is teaching kids independence and giving them your trust not beneficial?
bsagdiyev··on More invested in nuclear fusion in last 12 months than past decade
Yea the efforts of people like you pushing anti-nuclear views. Can't wait for the greenhouse gases to make warming even worse while we use NAT gas and coal to smooth over wind and solar.
bsagdiyev··on More invested in nuclear fusion in last 12 months than past decade
You argue this a lot on HN but real world shows the opposite happening.
bsagdiyev··on New divorce app to help couples split assets in New York without lawyers
Tell that to my dad, who dealt with a vindictive ex-wife who cleaned him out and used my sister as a pawn against him. My sister still hates my dad to this day due to the lies she told her about him.
bsagdiyev··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
Justify it however you like. Violence just makes people go against you and is wrong, full stop.
bsagdiyev··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
I hate to "be that guy" but this ends up being a both sides issue. There was a notice sent around to some churches after the RvW appeal to be vigilant since they had received some info on people possibly acting violently towards churches since they blamed them for it. (Edit to add: Please see https://janesrevenge.noblogs.org/2022/06/26/janes-revenge-ni... -- these are pointedly anti-fascists, the opposite of the right. So this is a both sides issue.)

Americans just don't seem to want to get along and understand on any side of the aisle. I can't talk politics to my family since they're all charged on their views and if I differ we just argue.

bsagdiyev··on QA workers at Blizzard Albany are unionizing
"Update: An Activision Blizzard spokesperson says that the company will not willingly recognize GWA Albany."

Gonna go down kicking and screaming instead of just doing better.

bsagdiyev··on America’s favorite family outings are increasingly out of reach
Nah, I moved out to NC from SoCal last year. Harris Lake is the place I'm talking about, cools down Shearon Harris nuclear plant. Looks like thats up around Sacramento? My cousin recently moved to Modesto from PA so I'll recommend it to him.
bsagdiyev··on Germany to Rethink Nuclear Shutdown as Energy Crisis Deepens
With an exposure of 1.4mrem, as opposed to an X-ray which gives a 3.2mrem dose. So a nothing sandwich.
bsagdiyev··on America’s favorite family outings are increasingly out of reach
I discovered something like this nearby to me recently. Not salt water since we're about two hours from the ocean, but a lake with playgrounds, beaches and forested walking areas. The lake is man made to cool the nearby nuclear plant and I suspect these were built as a concession to the state, but they're very well maintained and nice. I take my three year old fishing and to the playground and he loves it.

"Hey mom stop using Facebook? No, well bye!" -- what an awful way to live.
bsagdiyev··on The “Tire Extinguishers” Arrived in the U.S., They're After Gas Guzzler SUVs
The weight of the rim edge on the sidewall of the tire can damage it leading to early failure. So, yes, it does at least damage them.
bsagdiyev··on The “Tire Extinguishers” Arrived in the U.S., They're After Gas Guzzler SUVs
If the weight of the car on the tire sidewall doesn't cause damage... then they need new tires or risk a blowout. And a bike pump? I'm not so sure.
bsagdiyev··on Extreme heat, drought will permanently scar California and its social fabric
I mean the aqueduct system already pumps water up 1900 feet over the Tehachapi mountains[0], so that might be hard but feasible.

bsagdiyev··on One-night stands will be illegal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
Yes, absolutely. Full stop. Just because it's a cultural norm doesn't make it compatible with modern society.
bsagdiyev··on Playstation confirms chain of 5 vulnerabilities on PS4/PS5
SIE is technically a different part of Sony and is analogous with PlayStation at this point.
bsagdiyev··on Price shocks in formative years scar consumption for life
Jesus where do you live? I moved from San Diego to Raleigh, didn't get a pay adjustment and even that place wouldn't be anywhere near that cost here.
bsagdiyev··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
Hit the nail on the head. It's a bit more than that realistically.

I work for CrowdStrike just so any potential bias is out there in the open, but do not speak for them.

bsagdiyev··on Volkswagen CEO says car giant will overtake Tesla on electric vehicle sales
Yeah that's not why I trust Elon less than VW but go on. Tell me why I, me, have this opinion. Since you know me.
