bsagdiyev··on My favorite restaurant served gas
Yes indeed, it's roughly a 20 minute drive from us so we'll go there if we're heading to/from somewhere on I-40.
bsagdiyev··on My favorite restaurant served gas
Love these sorts of places, the Redneck BBQ Lab by us is attached to a gas station and serves some pretty good BBQ. Always a nice thing to find a restaurant like that.
bsagdiyev··on Three gaming-focused Linux operating systems beat Windows 11 in gaming benchmark
Arch completely broke systemd-boot after a recent update for me on my laptop. After spending half a day trying to figure out how to get it put itself back in to the loader.conf I just put Windows 11 on the laptop. My girlfriend uses the laptop and wouldn't know how to fix this if it happened again. So it still breaks stuff on occasion. Maybe not for you, but it does.
bsagdiyev··on BMW, Subaru and Porsche drivers 'more likely to cause a crash', study finds
At this point BMW should offer some classes after buying that explains what the levers hanging off the side of the steering column do. I've owned and modified numerous BMWs but there is a stereotype that the drivers don't signal, for a good reason, most of them just don't.
bsagdiyev··on Tesla drivers can now disable remote access in privacy win
A metal plate affixed to the car in a highly visible location may help this problem.
bsagdiyev··on Finding that lead emissions from aircraft engines contribute to air pollution
That doesn't seem to be the norm here and we're pretty lax on emissions testing requirements. It was a bigger issue in California when I was in the car scene there than anywhere else i've lived. And their emissions are stricter than most places (if not all) in the US.
bsagdiyev··on Qualcomm laying off >1,250 in California
This is a normal, yearly cycle in San Diego. I lived nearby to Qualcomm in the Mira Mesa area and it was well known then (5 years ago or so) to avoid working there due to these layoffs.
bsagdiyev··on Show HN: I built a virtual tabletop for playing Dungeons and Dragons
How does this compare to FoundryVTT? I use that for self hosting online sessions and it's been amazing. Will definitely check this out!
bsagdiyev··on The GRU's Disruptive Playbook
We're only 500+ days in to what the Russians planned a few weeks to take. This is clearly going fine. But it is good fun to see these shit takes from people, carry on.
bsagdiyev··on US sues eBay for allowing sale of emissions defeat devices
This is correct. One of my two modified cars came from CA at some point and had emissions equipment that was standard there but not on 48 state cars. Removal of it didn't impact emissions and the car actually runs cleaner modified than it did when bone stock. But you see a lot of people here who just assume modified == killing baby penguins with emissions or something. Trust me even the car guys don't like the straight piped VQ revving at the car meets.
bsagdiyev··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine (2022)
I don't know where you live but I cannot buy a guy by just showing up. They take ID, they require a license and still run a check. The only exception is when you get your CCW which removes the license per handgun (not long gun/shotgun) but requires a background check.
bsagdiyev··on Knightmare: A DevOps Cautionary Tale (2014)
No they're preempting someone coming along and claiming this. Haven't seen it in the replies yet but there's typically one (or a lot in some cases) person(s) claiming ChatGPT will bring Jesus back from the dead sort of thing.
bsagdiyev··on I rode with an ice road trucker to the Arctic Circle
Is the gravel loose or packed? Was there a wet spot that will cause a loss of traction later on when the water on the tire freezes? Is that rut solid or soft? That spot looks frozen but there's standing water around it. Can it eyeball how deep the mud may be in a spot to decide whether it's ok to cross or attempt to maneuver around? There's moose tracks here, be cautious. There is more to it than just "hey let's automate this"

Edit, more: tree down across the road, truck can't drive over it. Get out and wrap a chain around it to move it. Busted axle, how will it fix that? Flat tire? Mechanic used distilled water like a dumbass and it froze. Road sign was taken out by an accident, guardrail is missing, hope you arent using those to determine how to keep on track.

bsagdiyev··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Yes, in California at the time. Some people get weird. It isn't like it happens all the time, it was a first for me.
bsagdiyev··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Not sure by bt4u's comment is dead, but I've had that exact situation happen to me. Been accused of trying to steal a child while taking my son to the playground. It is an actual thing and it sucks.
bsagdiyev··on Real-world ranges for Teslas 50-60% of EPA Range
It is nowhere near this large of a difference.
bsagdiyev··on WinRAR zero-day exploited since April to hack trading accounts
Probably not, if the releases come from scene groups they follow the standard.
bsagdiyev··on All of the vehicle license plates available in America
I forget it now, but I believe we pay an extra flat $30/yr for our "NC Aquariums" plate. The price is the same regardless of which optional design you get and the fee goes to the cause on the plate.
bsagdiyev··on Tijuana's illegal sewer hookups linked to cross-border pollution
The first thing you see driving in to TJ are decrepit and destroyed buildings. We always made our way out of TJ as fast as possible, either on to the toll roads south to Ensenada or east out to La Rumorosa. Everyone I know, whether from Mexico or not, knows you don't really hang around TJ for long if you can help it.

Mexico is a beautiful country but it still has its problems. You've just kept to tourist areas if that's your view on it.

bsagdiyev··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
Really? Because I see it a lot in "engineers" in tech. They're right, you're wrong and that's how it plays out.
bsagdiyev··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Get the fuck off the road with that attitude. You're why people die.
bsagdiyev··on RPCS3 – Open Source Playstation 3 Emulator
rpcs3 just uses the PS3s update pup files to install the OS so I imagine there might be a way for newer consoles like that. You can obtain the PS3 ones directly from Sony for use on a flash drive to update the console.
bsagdiyev··on Android Games on PC
If you go back in the commit history far enough you can find when the actions workflow files were deleted. I used that (and other repos found via search) to set up the auto builds on mine.
bsagdiyev··on Android Games on PC
Yeah it isn't straightforward and you put trust in the community sort of thing. I've forked a previous version of one of the repos that has a GitHub workflow to build it automatically and have gone through that to make sure it's clean. I can make suggestions as to a repo to use but mine is private since they get DMCA notices I believe.
bsagdiyev··on Android Games on PC
It can, but it comes with the Amazon app store by default. There are projects around that integrate Play and Magisk.
bsagdiyev··on Over 900 Rarbg Magnet Link Repos Anonymously Nuked from GitHub
Another copy to clone locally. Thanks. I've got a few other repos, some with tools to sort through the data.
bsagdiyev··on Hipólito Mora, vigilante crusader against Mexico’s cartels, killed in ambush
Reminds me I need to get a gun at my next fill-up. Thanks! Hope they have a deal, buy ten gallons get two assault rifles!
bsagdiyev··on Gandi.net – Pricing Update
I moved to Porkbun after some HN post a few months back, just a single .me domain but it was quick and easy. Happy so far.
bsagdiyev··on France plans to close tax loophole benefiting Airbnb
I can promise, anecdotally, that is not followed. You know where the AirBnB houses are in my Mom's neighborhood in La Costa/Carlsbad area because they will always have loud people/parties. Neighbors are polite enough to give a heads up if they're going to be loud generally.
bsagdiyev··on Kami home camera app suddenly started displaying ads in the app
I did that with the Wyze Pan cam we used to keep an eye on our son when he was an infant. Same app functionality but we could also do an RTSP stream out and I could keep an eye on my desktop while working.
