brunnsbe··on Swiss to vote on $25 an hour minimum wage
Switzerland's need to export stuff and to do business with the surrounding EU-countries is bigger than the EU-countries' need to do business with Switzerland. Putting a minimum wage this high will naturally impact the prices on goods leading to a shrinking export market. I wonder how they came up with $25/hr and not, let's say, $17,50/hr?
brunnsbe··on Color for the Colorblind
As a colorblind I find it a little bit offensive that it in the aricle says that "colorblind react significantly slower to red signals". Red is the topmost light, green is the bottom one. I just follow the light that is turned on, why would it make me significantly slower? Would a not colorblind driver drive if the uppermost light turns green and not red?
brunnsbe··on Which Cities Sleep in, and Which Get to Work Early
At my workplace in Helsinki, Finland we have a flex time. You can come in between 7.00 and 10.00 in the morning and leave between 15.00 and 18.00. Meetings are allowed only between 10-15 if otherwise not agreed with the participants. The time spans are set by Finnish law which says that you need to be working at least 5h per day and max 10h, overtime must separately be agreed with your manager. Some of our coders come in at around 8 in the morning, others at 10.
brunnsbe··on Microsoft offers Windows XP users $100 off new Windows 8 PCs
I understand Microsoft's concern but stuff like this will not help. Take my neighbor for example, I'm quite sure he will still be using his old computer until it breaks, happily running Windows XP with no idea that the support or updates (that he never have installed anyway) has ended, people like him doesn't understand what it's all about and therefore doesn't care. All I can do is to tell him that it's time for an upgrade but he will insist to keep on using it (at least I managed to install Firefox and Avast on his computer a couple of years ago).
brunnsbe··on JDK 8 Release Notes
Hopefully JDK 8 will have a better release than JDK 7: http://searchhub.org//2011/07/28/dont-use-java-7-for-anythin...
brunnsbe··on Helsinki’s personalized bus service is like Uber for public transit
Here is a link to the official page of the service: https://kutsuplus.fi/tour

It's always nice to get new services, but I'm afraid this one will become a niche product due to the public transport system in Helsinki already is working so well.

A service that is used a lot is the Tour Planner which was one of the first ones released for public transport in the world (I think this is already the third version of it): http://www.reittiopas.fi/en/

brunnsbe··on Tell HN: Meeting Satoshi
Oh what a witch-hunt after Satoshi, he wants to be left alone from the public so please respect it.
brunnsbe··on To close or not to close – Void HTML elements
Nice write-up! I have never thought about shrinking the closing tags to </>, if it were supported it would shrink large HTML-pages quite nicely. Has there been a proposal at W3C to use that kind of a format back in the good old days of HTML 1.0?
brunnsbe··on Nokia announces the X and X+, its first Android phones
Here is a link to the press release: http://press.nokia.com/2014/02/24/nokia-connects-the-next-bi...
brunnsbe··on Swedish developer discovers security hole in iPhone
I don't think it's just Flash-messages, or it could be based on Flash-messages containing faulty data. He gets the phone tricked to show that there is 250 missing calls on both lock screen and in the home screen (does the voice mail sms use flash?). Certain types of messages also locks the whole phone so that it has to be rebooted.
brunnsbe··on Use SQL subqueries to count distinct 50x faster
CTEs are found in SQL Server as well:

brunnsbe··on The Jolla phone – first impressions
Here is a more honest article (in Finnish) from someone who have used the device for a day: http://mobiili.fi/2013/11/28/jolla-vuorokauden-kaytossa-tass...

English translation: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fi&tl=en&js=n&prev=...

According to the article the biggest problem seems to be Internet-connectivity, the reception is sometimes bad and it has problems connecting to WLAN. The browser is also quite slow and needs improvements.

brunnsbe··on British man accused of hacking into US government systems
The guy (Lauri Love) also has a Finnish citizenship and this is now big news here in Finland.

brunnsbe··on It’s not just the iPhone 5S — the 5C sensors aren’t accurate either
Gizmodo has a more detailed article with some tests from last week: http://gizmodo.com/the-iphone-5s-motion-sensors-are-totally-...
brunnsbe··on Move over Bootstrap and Foundation, welcome Semantic UI
How about browser support (e.g. IE8)? Couldn't find any info on semantic-ui.com.
brunnsbe··on Linus Torvalds defends his right to shame Linux kernel developers
I'm just wondering if Linux would have been different it it wouldn't have been built on this "management by Perkele". I personally think there are a lot of competent developers around the world that could have contributed to the kernel but chose not to because of Linus style of communication Personally I uust feel embarrased by his behaviour, it's not typical for working in an international environment
brunnsbe··on Poll: What is your primary programming language?
SQL (if one can call it a programming language).
brunnsbe··on Maybe buses should be free
Juzt a small note: It's free only for citizens of Tallinn, not for e.g. tourists.
brunnsbe··on Apple Introduces iOS 7
Change the white background to gray and you have the design of Nokia's N9 user interface (which isn't a bad thing).

Ps. Actually I must check how to change the background on my N9 to give it a fresh look. ;-)

brunnsbe··on German railways to test anti-graffiti drones
They also have a route planner for almost whole Europe that is super-fast. Would be interesting to read howabout it's built.
brunnsbe··on The Stockholm tech startup scene is buzzing
I think the reason is the same as in Finland. Both Sweden (Ericsson) and Finland (Nokia) have had big technology companies that today isn't doing that well and with many talented people therefore searching for new jobs and setting up startups.
brunnsbe··on Software Development Is Bad For Your Health
I have both a standing desk at work and a special saddle that I can sit on and use it on every chair: http://www.humantool.fi/english/

The idea with the saddle is that it is so unbalanced that you have to correct your position with small movements all the time.

brunnsbe··on IE10 for Windows 7 Globally Available
My company is going stop supporting IE7 this spring, now when three newer version of IE are available it's time to move on.
brunnsbe··on The babies who nap in sub-zero temperatures
Same her, and enjoyed it in the Finnish army as well (except for the survival camp without any blankets). Sleeping outside just makes you a lot more rested.
brunnsbe··on US warns on Java software as security concerns escalate
I'm wondering, why hasn't Firefox put the setting on as default. Of course it would be quite annoying with the Flash-plugin but I think it's worth the trouble.
brunnsbe··on How make your web-app become available faster: Let go of the DOM Ready events
So as a summary, Javascript loaded (except for loaded via document.write) can immediately access the DOM if the Javascript is loaded in the bottom of the body-element making the use of a ready-event like jQuery's ready-event obsolete. I have always wondered if that really is the case but haven't tried it out myself, seems that it's a green light then. :-)
brunnsbe··on Nokia hijacking HTTP traffic on phones?
What kind of security professional is this Gaurang Pandya? As far as I know it's common knowledge that both Nokia (on their Asha-series) and Opera Mini uses a proxy server to compress the data.

From Opera Mini's wikipage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_Mini): "Unlike straightforward web browsers, Opera Mini fetches all content through a proxy server and reformats web pages into a format more suitable for small screens."

And on Nokia developer's home page (http://www.developer.nokia.com/Develop/Series_40/Nokia_Brows...): "The Nokia Xpress Browser comprises a client and a cloud-based proxy service. When a user requests a web page the proxy reads the page, processes CSS and JavaScript code, and compresses its content, which is then delivered to the client for display on the user's phone."

brunnsbe··on Is my developer's home-brew password security right or wrong, and why?
For a short password, does it help to first calculate a hash using MD5 or SHA1 and then run it through Bcrypt? As far as I have understood it's better that the password to encrypt is long enough which the first simple hashing takes care of, or am I wrong?
brunnsbe··on World’s narrowest house by Jakub Szczesny
Quite neat that the front door is horizontal and not vertical. :)
