bruceb··on FiveThirtyEight Gets the Ax as ABC News Slashes Jobs in Major Shakeup
This is why news is hard. Don’t serve up rose colored news and you are tagged as hard right.

The idea Nate Silver took a far right turn is laughable. Saying the democratic candidate is going to lose or that some D positions are clearly unpopular doesn’t make one hard right, just pointing out what the numbers show.

Saying the Dodgers have good chance of winning World Series doesn’t make one a Dodgers fan. Or saying most people like iPhones make one an Apple fan.

bruceb··on Launch YC: Optifye.ai – AI performance monitoring for factory workers
"today's demo is just a disaster from every angle."

It is not. Lots of exposure. Those who complain were not customers. Those who are potential customers don't care about comments on twitter.

Can argue backlash hurts YC but for the company itself probably helps in long run.

bruceb··on Show HN: Open source video calls on a WiFi AP with meshing to the cloud
What are the use cases for this?

Could you have video calls with no internet just over routers and then later added people via internet if wanted to? Or I am I not understanding it correctly.

bruceb··on UK counter-terrorism unit demands Steam withdraw controversial shooter from sale
@fakedang I saw your comment here:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41373440 If you ever write up anything about this, would love to read it. For my own interest and also trying to inform a 19 year old family friend about the realities of HR that she is studying at college right now. Want her to realize some of it will be automated away (or to do it herself) Didn't see contact in your profile, so random comment here!
bruceb··on Musk's daily $1M giveaway to registered voters may be illegal, legal experts say
If it was illegal they would say so. It isn't that is why politicians like PA governor Josh Shapiro imply it is but don't say it because they know it is not.
bruceb··on Life in India is a series of bilateral negotiations
Some truth here though saying Bangalore airport (BLR) is on par with Singapore airport (SIN) is laughable.

A little stick is what India needs. People doing stuff like driving their motorcycle on the footpath aka sidewalk, will stop doing it if you offer just a touch of resistance and just stand there. It isn’t the US where you have small but real chance of being shot (at least in southern India, bihar etc might be exception)

Same with jumping the que, calling people out generally does the trick.

Some problems are more complex but a little more stick in India would make some solid improvements in everyday life.

bruceb··on Independent directors of 23andMe resign from board
Out of curiosity what stops you from romantic pursuits / marriage. If don't want to answer I of course understand.
bruceb··on Independent directors of 23andMe resign from board
Closest competitor does a lot of heavy lifting in this situation. Ancestry is the overwhelming leader in the find long lost relative space/your "roots" space. Look at https://www.ancestry.com/ and https://www.23andme.com/ 23andme has basically given up on this part of the business.

Their pitch is health. But that pitch is murky with no good hook to keep you hooked for a monthly subscription. So after they get the initial $99 from the customer, most of the value customer is going to get is already served up in the first report. Maybe their big database will turn into making cancer drugs but maybe it wont.

bruceb··on Show HN: Spawn – Build iOS Apps with English
While distribution is the biggest thing, yes the number of well functioning apps is limited. Plenty ones in appstore that only half work.
bruceb··on The loneliness of the low-ranking tennis player
If you play in the major league baseball you min is $740k not $60k. https://apnews.com/major-league-baseball-labor-agreement-det...
bruceb··on My New App for Parents to Buy and Sell Gently Used Baby and Kids' Gear
There is only one thing here that matters: options to deliver so that we can support the communities better

Everything else is basically FB Marketplace, Offerup, nextdoor, craiglist.

If you can make an app that enough people use is questionable, let alone be profitable is another thing.

Whats the plan to make $?

bruceb··on T-Mobile users thought they had a lifetime price lock–guess what happened next
This applies to other things as well. Be glad people pay for the gym and rarely go.
bruceb··on T-Mobile users thought they had a lifetime price lock–guess what happened next
The US covers a lot more land. More towers to put up. Higher wages to pay. Less density than UK.
bruceb··on Why are debut novels failing to launch?
Have you thought about translating it to English (using cheap or free means)?
bruceb··on Show HN: Minimalist, walkie-talkie for startups
The website looks good but has two major fails.

1. Change the pic of you, the site makes it feels like premium product then there is a pic of you in your room with plastic target bag. Ruins it.

2. make the format for all the names of the apple people the same. Not some with upper case or under score or period.

Other comment would be can probably cut down on some of the text. Don't over sell. The point of flowy is instant and easy.

bruceb··on The Nonprofit Industrial Complex and the Corruption of the American City
"harsh punishments don't work"

They do if they are very harsh, see Singapore, Indonesia etc. America doesn't want to that.

bruceb··on US prisoners are given dangerous jobs. But what if they are hurt or killed?
Well that is admirable (though clearly as you state there was an incentive). I hope you continue.

As I said I am very open to them be considered but I also don't think those who have committed offense against society should have priority over people who have not.

bruceb··on US prisoners are given dangerous jobs. But what if they are hurt or killed?
The president of Singapore,Tharman Shanmugaratnam, is literally a man of south asian decent. He won the election with an overwhelming majority, 70%, the most ever.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharman_Shanmugaratnam

bruceb··on US prisoners are given dangerous jobs. But what if they are hurt or killed?
It is hard to fathom. People who murder others have done harm to society that can never be undone. Why do I care what happens to a man who stalked and killed a woman/women/men?
bruceb··on US prisoners are given dangerous jobs. But what if they are hurt or killed?
How many (non white collar) felons have you hired?

I think these prisoners should be given consideration but job automatically? No. People often push for policies for which they don't have to comply with.

bruceb··on 23 million Americans might lose internet access today as ACP ends
Clickbait headline. Xfinity is still offering low cost internet for those using assistance programs. https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/internet-esse...

$10 for 50mps.

Can also get deals such as for 200mbs with modem for $25 a month (depends where you live).

Yes there are places in the world with better deals but saying 23 million people are going to lose it, just isn't accurate.

bruceb··on The Ivy League and other elite private colleges are losing esteem
When the richest and most powerful start sending their kids to public school then I might believe this.

Until then the title makes for good clickbait but nothing believable.

This tweet I read earlier today lays out the case:

"The best reason to go to a top 10 American university:

In a random class you'll have a governor's daughter, the son of a billionaire and two guys with 170+ IQ. It's a hell of a group of people to mingle with to succeed in life. I'm super anti-university but I'll admit that this alone probably makes those schools worth it.."

bruceb··on Show HN: An app that takes your money if you don't reach your goals
This concept of possibly get money for doing fitness activity, lose money if you don't has been tried a couple times but nobody has cracked it that I know of. One used location to see if you had visited the gym that you are a member of.

This seems set as specific individual money pots you can buy into instead of monthly goals as at least one previous app was set on.

Money is the best universal motivator, there are others could be more motivating but to a lot fewer people.

I hope this succeeds and more people accomplish the goals they set.

bruceb··on Ask HN: Is a Geo-Based Audio Chat App Viable? (For the Blind Community)
The biggest questions to answer is how will it succeed when this idea has been tried and failed a couple times.

Two main problems, 1. it is much easier to make a compelling tweet/post than audio clip. 2. And much less time consuming to consume text and pics.

Unless this is live and then you have the problem of people have to be on at the same time.

Unless you can find answers to these problems, spend your valuable time on more feasible idea.

bruceb··on Apple Says iPhone 6 Plus Now 'Obsolete' and iPad Mini 4 Now 'Vintage'
You will take my iphone 6s plus (the last with headphone jack) from my cold dead hands.

Honesty as non mobile gamer, it would still work fine for basically all the apps I use on my newer iphone pro (except for the camera).

bruceb··on California State University system sees unprecedented decline in enrollment
what point?
bruceb··on California State University system sees unprecedented decline in enrollment
You think the avg CSU student is going to perform the same as avg UC student?
bruceb··on SBF asks for 5-year prison sentence, calls 100-year recommendation "grotesque"
No problem with lawyer representing client. In this case make client look worse as we know its BS and might even bring him a worse sentence.
bruceb··on SBF asks for 5-year prison sentence, calls 100-year recommendation "grotesque"
The filing said that Bankman-Fried's Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) would make him "uniquely vulnerable" in prison, noting that he "has an exceptional IQ, but difficulty with conventional styles of communication, especially around emotion."

Do lawyers get embarrassed when writing stuff like this? He made no shortage of public appearances. He is also going to most likely serve in a lower security facility.

bruceb··on The creator economy can't rely on Patreon
The TL;DR of this is basically there are too many people creating content.

Best thing that creators could do is tell other creators to quit. The author doesn't say this part but really that is what it comes down to.

Instead she offers a generic advice about diversifying the medium of delivery.
