brtkdotse··on Neutralisation of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision
Autocorrect for “vermin”?
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to migrate out of Gmail and Google Suite?
Sure, but you’re going to run into that with all hosted email. Microsoft has, in my opinion, a much better customer service track record.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to migrate out of Gmail and Google Suite?
I’m using a custom domain using a small Swedish registrar so I think your info is out of date :)
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to migrate out of Gmail and Google Suite?
I know Microsoft isn’t popular but Office365s family plan is fantastic value for the money. All interactions with Microsoft support have been… scripted but successful.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to cancel Adobe CC subscription without paying a “cancellation fee”?
> Most other needs are covered by Sketch/Figma.

Hoo boy, do I have some bad news for you!

> Haven’t found a good Illustrator alternative yet, but didn’t look much.

I’m very happy with Affinity Designer

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
I’ve been in this exact situation, and honestly - just move on.

I mean, if you see this a fantastic opportunity to grow or whatever then fine, have at it.

However, you’re going to be fighting a two-front battle, both against the devs and against management, for widely different reasons. It’s going to take a toll on you.

Ask yourself if you really want to spend the next few years doing work you probably won’t see any recognition for.

brtkdotse··on Rapid Green Energy Transition Will Likely Result in Trillions of Net Savings
Phosphorus is essential to growing food and shortages have already begun.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Where are the good platforms for contract work?
They're alive and well in Northern Europe at least. I'd say a majority of contracting work is done through them since they somehow get exclusivity deals with big clients like H&M, Scania, SAAB and the like. They charge around 5-15% (almost always 10% though) of every invoice.

Before you balk at the number, consider that during my almost 5 years as a solo contractor I've spent _zero_ hours doing sales. None. When I want a new assignment I send one email and within a week or two I have a 6 month contract.

brtkdotse··on “Secrets” about the consumer audio business you may find interesting
I’m actually surprised it’s as high as 30%. Would’ve expected 10% tops.

Reminds me of that Planet Money special where they made their own tshirts from scratch, as “finding a cotton farmer to buy cotton” from scratch. The thing that added the most cost was the transport from the dock in NYC to the store.

brtkdotse··on MVP.css – Minimalist stylesheet for HTML elements
I admire your ability to maintain a friendly attitude despite the rather abrasive tone in the original comment.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
I just watched “10 years with Miyazaki” and had the exact same sentiments.
brtkdotse··on Meta’s metaverse hype leads to real-world backlash
Do you have an example of something that was pushed upon people, forcing them to like it?
brtkdotse··on Responding to recruiter emails with GPT-3

Hello, new vocabulary entry!

brtkdotse··on Royal Caribbean to use SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet onboard their fleet
> fantastic in some ways, but I think they've massively oversold it

Seems like par for the course for most Musk ventures

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is there a simple web UI toolbox for back-end devs?
I build all my side projects with the following stack:

- ASP.NET Core with Razor Pages for templeting (substitute this for Django/Laravel/RoR to match your preference) - SQLite for DB - TailwindCSS standalone + a UI builder like https://shuffle.dev for the UI (huge bonus if your templating engine supports components) - HTMX to sprinkle AJAX where appropriate - AlpineJS for small DOM manipulation (open/close menus)

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I bought a P14s a few months ago and got an offer for 3 years of premium on-site support for €1 :D

Note that you have to purchase it as a company to get access to the premium support.

brtkdotse··on The slow death of the traditional business card
Does it say:

sharing good books, good food and exotic music and dance

tender embraces

unusual sense of humor

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Are you using .NET to write cross-platform desktop or mobile apps?
What’s your opinion on WinForms? I’ve yet to come across anything that’s better in terms of perf, developer experience and stability.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Which minimalist phone would you choose in 2022?
If you want, you can disable _a lot_ of smart features on an iPhone. If you’re paranoid you can lock the re-enabling behind a passcode you give to a trusted person.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What's a low-friction video editor?
Interesting, thanks!
brtkdotse··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
The debugger is part of Visual Studio, which is a paid product. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to not publish the source for it.
brtkdotse··on The layoffs at Klarna
Oh, come on. Everybody likes a good, juicy airing of dirty laundry.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
Interesting. Did you scrape the restaurants websites?
brtkdotse··on Who Makes Ridgid Tools?
I've been around the internet long enough to spot poorly researched, ghost written "content" and this is bottom tier.
brtkdotse··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
Visual Studio is to VSCode what car is to carpet.
brtkdotse··on The productivity tax you pay for context switching
Pretty big “so long as” there, chief.
brtkdotse··on Apple’s Hot iPhone Quarter Masks a Behind-the-Scenes Slowdown
There’s another aspect to this and that’s the iPhone is Done. Finished. Completed.

I recently switched from a 4 years old X to and iPhone 13 Mini and to be perfectly honest I can’t experience any difference, it’s basically the exact same phone in a smaller form factor. Hadn’t it been for the size of the X being an issue, I probably could’ve stayed on it for 4 more years.

Great from a consumer (and environmental!) standpoint, not so great from a quarterly report standpoint.

brtkdotse··on A looming copper crunch and why recycling can’t fix it
Is physical currency still common in the US? I haven’t used physical currency in probably 5-6 years, outside the 10 SEK the tooth fairy leaves.
brtkdotse··on US regulators will certify first small nuclear reactor design
At least in Sweden the vast majority of single family homes are heated via geothermal/air-to-water heat pumps (which run on electricity)
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How do you celebrate your birthday?
The wife and I take the day off on each other’s birthdays and do a small outing together
