brohoolio··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Did the utility companies ask for voluntary reduction in power consumption ahead of time?

We had a situation here where extreme weather and a natural gas pumping station that exploded caused real problems in our natural gas supply. The utility asked everyone to lower their consumption by turning their heat down to 65.

Luckily, that was the extent of the rationing.

brohoolio··on Ford cuts F-150 pickup truck production due to semiconductor chip shortage
EACH of those F-150 plants is a fortune 50 company. You are talking about cutting production by 1/3 at one plant and 2/3 at the other plant. It’s a big deal.
brohoolio··on Information overload helps fake news spread
How many people from that campaign are felons now?
brohoolio··on Ohio Prison Death Updates [pdf]
I’ve been thinking about the asymptotic cases in situations like this and the Roosevelt. I think if folks are monitored very closely for symptoms we might learn more about how it impacts people and what percentage of cases stay asymptotic.
brohoolio··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
You can easily patch the state revenue holes without fixing the pension obligations. You basically give the states the difference between what they were projecting and what the reality is. By doing this, you fix part of the economy keeping up employment until the private sector can come back online. If you let states fall down right now you are going to turn this into a depression. It just means the beginning of Lyft’s troubles.

There is nothing to applaud with his actions or statements. It’s just malicious and gives the rest of the world a chance to out compete America.

brohoolio··on Fauci: US can expect more than 100k Covid-19 deaths, millions of cases
This is so sad.

We need a country wide lockdown for 8 to 10 weeks to get ahead of the virus. Give the scientists and doctors sometime to figure out potential mitigations.

I’m almost certain that his estimates are too low unless we can get ahead of it.

brohoolio··on Coronavirus information and extenuating circumstances policy
I understand what you are saying about overreacting, but citing 70 current cases is misleading. The current thinking according to a tweet I can’t find is that there is a cluster of at least 300 in Washington.

I’m guessing if the USA was actually testing as much as they should the current count would be closer to 1,000. The fiasco with the returned cruise ship passengers alone could have dramatically spread it.

brohoolio··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
It’s about smoothing the curve so the healthcare system can absorb the influx of patients. If the healthcare system is overwhelmed then it’s a problem.

Here’s a link to a great article.

brohoolio··on Bloomberg just bought CityLab and put half its reporters out of a job
I’m shocked so much great content is put out by such a great team. Hopefully Bloomberg can invest more into the business.
brohoolio··on What it would take to suck more carbon dioxide out of the air than we put in
I keep thinking that carbon in the air is the just the largest game of prisoners dilemma where we likely all lose.
brohoolio··on Engineer Says Software Firm Cut Her Maternity Leave Short After Her Baby Died
My understanding is it was very common for teachers to be fired/contracts not renewed as soon as they announced they were pregnant. Not sure why you think a link to a site like freebeacon backs you up.

I understand that people might not like her policies, but this stuff is clearly targeted swift boating. It doesn’t add to to the discussion.

brohoolio··on Early Retirement May Speed Up Cognitive Decline: Study
I wonder if subtle cognitive decline leads to early retirement.
brohoolio··on Rising Seas Will Erase More Cities by 2050, New Research Shows
Did I just miss the link to the research material?

How much higher will it be? 6 inches? 2 feet?

brohoolio··on The decline in U.S. life expectancy is unlike anything seen in a century (2018)
Profits.

Several drug manufacturers flooded the market with pills exposing way too many people to opioids in a casual way. Once folks are addicted it’s very very difficult to break the addiction.

The Washington post has an excellent series on the topic if you are interested.

brohoolio··on When the Student Newspaper Is the Only Daily Paper in Town
The story isn’t completely accurate. While The Michigan Daily is great, we do have excellent reporting in Ann Arbor by MLive. Some of the articles aren’t great, but we do have quality reporting. MLive has brought lots of awareness around PFAs in the Ann Arbor water supply.

Here’s a twitter thread from Crains Detroit which talks about how the quality of this article is kind of crappy.

brohoolio··on Obesity Is Weighing on Education, Productivity and the Economy
I agree. Feels like multiple environmental factors might be at play.

Lately I’ve been wondering about exposure to PFAs on all sorts of packaging.

brohoolio··on Apple Card launches today for all US customers
Pretty slick application process. Very quick approval. I’m digging the privacy.

But it didn’t work when I tried to buy lunch. I’ll try again tomorrow.

brohoolio··on Amazon expands its air cargo fleet
This was the subtext at Google’s Next conference. Basically 9 of the top 10 retailers are moving to GCP. The last one is Amazon.
brohoolio··on Glue traps are cruel, and retailers should be banned from selling them
Not the kind of link I’d expect on hacker news.

I’ve used glue traps once, wouldn’t use it again after seeing what happened to the mouse. I went back to the old school spring traps, which are also cheap.

brohoolio··on What happened after my 13-year-old son joined the alt-right
It seems like good fiction until it’s your life and then it seems terrible.

I can assure you, as someone who has multiple family members get sucked up into this ideology, this is how it happens.

brohoolio··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
There's going to be a bunch of comments about waste in universities, how people are irresponsible, trade schools, government alone guarantees that make it a crisis, no ability to discharge debt, etc.

The two big things that typically don't get brought up in these discussions is that government funding for college is way down and medical costs. All these state schools, which are pretty much the backbone of higher education in america are chronically underfunded. The last 40 years in america we have been borrowing against our future and higher education funding is just one aspect.

The second aspect is that higher education is fairly labor intensive, a large part of the labor cost is health care. When a pharmaceutical company acquires the rights to a rare drug and jacks up the cost 1000% that cost ultimately is passed on to students.

brohoolio··on Apple resumes selling iPhone SE at lower $249 price on its clearance store
My dream phone is a “military grade” SE. Slightly larger battery, rugged phone. I know it would be thicker, I’d be good with that.
brohoolio··on Apple resumes selling iPhone SE at lower $249 price on its clearance store
The 5s/SE is less than 5% of mobile traffic at our site.
brohoolio··on How much Americans make in wages
Yea but add kids to the mix. You can easily spend 10k-15k in daycare.
brohoolio··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
^famed^gamed
brohoolio··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
I should say it’s the kind of comment that throws off the whole thread, instead of talking about the article we are all arguing about talking points.
brohoolio··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
It’s a talking point. Compact. Powerful. No grounding in reality.

My dad is a conservative and his talking point about the house member who called trump a motherfucker shouldn’t have said that because she’s a woman. It’s ok that Trump swears but my dad was literally screaming about this representatives language.

brohoolio··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
I’m not sure what kind of R&D the $800 or whatever it costs now Epipen is paying for. R&D for lobbyists?

Or profits because the company gamed the market.

brohoolio··on PG&E falsified gas pipeline records for years after deadly explosion
If the state is doing a good job with oversight there should be a framework to punish bad behavior beyond fines.
brohoolio··on An open letter to FB, Twitter, Instagram regarding algorithms and my son's birth
There’s over 3 million miscarriages a year in the U.S. Often time it’s the worst event in your life.

Stillbirths are about 1/45 births.

This reminds me of when engineers were designing the first air bags. They didn’t think about the size difference between women and men. Diversity matters because it gives you different perspectives about life. I suspect that if the ratio of men to women in the tech industry were reversed this wouldn’t be an issues because it would have come up in discussions.
