brohoolio··on How did Tropicana lose $30M in a packaging redesign?
At least for me it’s about pattern recognition of something that I know delivers value.

As in I’ve had this juice before and it’s good and I don’t know the name but I recognize what the bottle looks like.

At least that’s how parents with young kids operate.

brohoolio··on Apple Maps location scan spikes WiFi latency every 60 seconds
I’ve seen this sporadically. A reboot clears it for me. I probably spent a good hour trying to figure out if it was my ISP or router. Improve your QA Apple
brohoolio··on Nature has enormous emotional and cognitive benefits on people
I’ll say from my own experience getting out in nature calms me and makes me feel better. Maybe it’s just the exercise of walking, maybe it’s seeing the trees and feeling the wind. It’s a good idea for folks to try it out and see how it makes them feel.
brohoolio··on A drug that cures alcoholism may be the next anti-anxiety medication
100% that the folks I know who are alcoholics have high anxiety. It’s not the same exact kind of anxiety in all of them, but I believe it’s at the root of their problem with alcohol.

Part of my understanding is that for at least some of these folks they never learned to deal with emotions. They never learned how to feel and accept that feelings exist. Alcohol is the agent that they utilize to help keep those feelings at a level they can manage. It’s a numbing agent.

The social chaos that these individuals because of their alcoholism is so enormous. And I’m at a point where I can see how it influences their adult children and it’s depressing. You can see how the disease is transmitted from generation to generation. Someone might be disposed towards alcoholism, but coming from an alcoholic family and the chaos that comes from that makes it even more likely that the kids will become alcoholics.

brohoolio··on Heresy
The teachers can’t address why someone in the class has two dads without risk of being sued. Heck the wording is vague enough you might not discuss marriage.

The ambiguity in the law is there as a feature to hush normal conversations that might otherwise happen.

brohoolio··on Yale University IT admin spent $40M college money on luxury cars, houses
Talk about a lack of financial controls.

One benefit of being a public institution is your books are sort of open, someone would notice this. You can’t just add $5 million a year to your budget.

brohoolio··on Germany considers keeping nuclear power plants online
If it’s safe it should be done. Anything that can create pressure to end the war should be done.

One other thing is that while natural gas is “cleaner”, it’s clear that leaks in the natural gas infrastructure are putting way more methane into the air than previously realized. I’m not sure you can trust countries such as Russia to have strong policies in place to make sure wells are properly sealed.

brohoolio··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
I’m thinking of all the chemicals we pump into everything that ups our risk to get cancer.
brohoolio··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
It’s great to have an initiative this large to tackle cancer.

I’d love it if also included large amount of effort into reducing exposure to chemicals that cause cancer.

brohoolio··on The case against masks at school
I’m sure this comment will be buried but I’ll talk about my experiences. Our school has a mask policy and transmission in the classroom has been almost nonexistent.

The district north of us has no mask policy and it’s been a shit show. My friend is a teacher there and they don’t bother with close contacts or tracing. Basically everyone got covid and they had to shut the schools down because so many teachers were sick.

This has been while the hospitals have been full of covid cases this fall and winter. Kids might not get real sick, but it infects a bunch of family, who can end up in the hospitals.

The time to roll back the mask mandates is either at the end of this school year or when we have widespread availability of the Pfizer drug paxlivod and folks can get ahold of it and take it when they have covid.

brohoolio··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
Hospitals are full here. It’s impacting everyone who gets sick or needs emergency care. Not over yet.

I’d say it’s over when Paxlovid is available widely whenever folks catch it, which should be in a couple months.

Pazlovid reduces risk of death or hospitalization by 90%. Basically turns an unvaccinated into a vaccinated person in terms of outcomes.

brohoolio··on Sex Differences in Friendship Preferences
This is too small a study to do this, but I’d be curious if the observations would hold up across various gender identities and the sexuality spectrum.

What would gay men prefer? What about lesbians? What about non-binary folks?

brohoolio··on James Webb is fully deployed
I was wondering that myself. How much would a second Webb cost? Or three? Or a fleet of smaller ones.

I’m assuming all of this was looked at, just curious what the answers to these questions.

Kudos to the team! Huge accomplishment.

brohoolio··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
I don’t understand why remote learning during this surge isn’t acceptable. I’ve seen opinion piece after opinion piece go on and on about how we need to have kids in school. The pieces attack school officials or teachers but complete ignore the logistics of having so many sick teachers. There aren’t enough subs to cover for the teachers. We know this surge will die down in 4-6 weeks. It’s a perfect time to pivot to remote to lower the strain our on failing healthcare system.

Heck even if you have enough teachers the people who make things happen like bus drivers, aides, helpers, food prep are going to be knocked out too.

My district had two hundred cases of covid in staff alone this week. That’s 10% of the staff. And we were remote.

brohoolio··on Sugar not so nice for your child’s brain development
Probably not the same sugar as a soda. The subtle differences can really make a big difference when it comes to biological processes.
brohoolio··on Insects are more sensitive than they seem
It's one of the underlying threads of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Both the Anime and Manga are fantastic.

brohoolio··on Two Triple Vaccinated Israeli Doctors Infected with Omicron
It’s possible. My understanding though is that “Hermain Cain Awards” go out to folks who fall into several categories.

They deny the virus exists/ is dangerous.

They don’t take precautions, like masks or get vaccinated.

The advocate against folks who get vaccinated calling them “sheep” or other names.

On one hand, many of these folks have fallen victim to disinformation and one political party in America that’s trying to actively hurt them for some sort of gain. So yea maybe it’s not their fault. On the other hand, my friend got accosted trying to get his kiddo vaxxed by one of these folks. Not cool.

brohoolio··on Ask HN: Why is there no good open-source LMS?
https://www.sakailms.org/

Sakai was what we used before moving to canvas.

brohoolio··on How Michigan grew its startup ecosystem
One of my coworkers who moved to Michigan after being all around the U.S. described the culture as people who were genuinely nice and caring. YMMV
brohoolio··on Last year I started reading a physical newspaper
Are there any particular traits or markers how you can tell a story is bot written?
brohoolio··on Vapor-collection technology saves water while clearing the air
I wonder if this tech could be applied to evaporative cooling systems for data centers in hot regions to capture the water that is otherwise lost.

I know many of the big data centers use a ton of water in areas that don’t exactly have water to spare.

brohoolio··on An Epidemic of Wage Theft Is Costing Workers Hundreds of Millions a Year (2014)
If USPS can get away with wage theft easily without consequences, I’m guessing it’s even easier for private employers.

brohoolio··on Red delicious apples weren’t always horrible
I do enjoy Envy apples but only if they are fresh. They fade faster than any other Apple I’ve encountered. By that I mean they lose their crispness and become undesirable.

My personal favs are honey crisp and cosmic crisp, but I’d prefer an Envy only if it’s fresh.

brohoolio··on France issues moratorium on prion research after fatal brain disease strikes
My heart breaks for these families. I can't help but wonder if the labs are taking the necessary precautions in terms of prion disposal.

I can't imagine the prions are allowed down the drain....

brohoolio··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
Is this a marketing post for these delivery services? Your website says you are a developer working for a startup.
brohoolio··on Wuhan lab staff sought hospital care before Covid-19 outbreak disclosed
That’s a pretty important point to leave out. Although given the accuracy of the early antibody tests… it doesn’t rule anything out completely.
brohoolio··on Wuhan lab staff sought hospital care before Covid-19 outbreak disclosed
Before you were vaccinated you could have donated blood and they would have tested for antibodies. A possible indication, but not something that would confirm it is if you had a reaction to the first shot. A number of folks I know who had covid had a more serious reaction to the first dose.
brohoolio··on Wuhan lab staff sought hospital care before Covid-19 outbreak disclosed
As a casual observer this seems really relevant, clearly something that could be important down the road as we learn more. It might not be COVID-19, but it’s the kind of transparency I expect out of government.
brohoolio··on Apple Approves Parler to Return to App Store
The damage is not done. Parler is the kind of app my dad will install on his phone and continue his radicalization.

I have no issues with him being conservative, I rather enjoy dialog with all sorts of folks. But the disconnect with reality is really something else.

brohoolio··on Phones and apps reduce your ability to focus even when they don’t distract you
I find that the mere presence of the phone is distracting. It's subtle and I didn't notice it until I physically started putting it in another room. I don't mindlessly pick it up and opening an app.
