brodock··on Cloudflare’s Zero Egress Fee Object Storage, R2, Is Now GA
The cost for the egress/ingress link is fixed by how large the pipe is not by how much you use the pipe.
brodock··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
Talent is scarse. People are hiring outside of the US because there is no one else to hire from at current payrange in those locations. You could start a biding war and pouch from other companies but that may not be financially viable for your business.
brodock··on Estonia clocks fastest inflation in the Eurozone at 20.1 percent
Considering Estonia is one of the most libertarian country, they are likely the only one actually measuring inflation correctly in the EU zone, not just playing with the index to make it fit a certain narrative.
brodock··on EU reaches deal to make USB-C a common charger for most electronic devices
They happen between walled gardens, them they sponsor a comitee to turn into a standard. The only difference between current and standard based is a bunch of extra burocracy where your competitor will try to fit their custom walled garden extension that is hard to implement to give them an edge.
brodock··on Shopify invests in research for Ruby at scale
people learned how to scale, not a big deal unless you are handling 1/3rd of the internet traffic for a specific industry.

cost of improving the language vs cost of hiring new people in different language, keep things stagnating for 10 years while rewrite is in progress, having to deal with talent exodus etc.
brodock··on DigitalOcean: New $4 Droplet and updated pricing
Ive quit them long time ago when they did not adjust price to compete. They also had for a few years, inferior performance per dollar as others in same range.

All that behaviour let linode and vultr flourish

brodock··on You’re muted – or are you? Videoconferencing apps may listen when mic is off

brodock··on Spotify and Google Announce User Choice Billing
If payment processing costs 30%, you are expected to pay that as an end-user in the end. There is no "company will eat the costs". They will find ways to recoup that and reach similar profitability levels.

So by choosing the expensive way of paying, you will eventually endup paying more.

There is no shortage of ways companies can do that: "oh you want this new content, too bad it's for our premium gold users only", "ohh you want improved audio quality, here is upsell", "ohh, traveling a lot lately? Maybe we will limit the amount of offline content you can keep, but not in the premium diamond plan", etc

Apple store is also annoyingly assuming you speak the language of the country where you live in. It doesn't allow you to choose "English" for example, if you are accessing it from Germany..
brodock··on Washington state shuts down Amazon price-fixing program nationwide
Amazon does not buy and keep a stock, they charge you for the privilege of selling in their marketplace:

> Sellers then bore the risk of having their products not sell in a timely manner, or at all, while still paying Amazon for things like storage fees of their enrolled products

Brother printers are also a good "family printer" (the one you buy so you dont have to fix the printer every N months through the phone).
brodock··on Stories Are Coming to Signal
Until they allow people to make bot accounts, theplatform eill be limited to person<>person communication. The actual strengh of WhatsApp is that companies are ditching their phone / support chat for whatsapp only. Which is the worst of both worlds.
brodock··on Tell HN: Full macOS reinstall because Apple ID
> However, companies like Amazon, Netflix, and Apple provide robust, free customer support.

Its not free, you paid for that as part of your purchase cost.

brodock··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
Per account reputation. A bot will either perfect the reports in which case they are working in your favor,or be completely random, in which case you shadow ban/ignore.
brodock··on UberEats took unauthorized amount (and not willing to pay it back)
If I have to guess, something something microservices/event-system. One separate team handles code consumption which is not he same who handles the validation, and because its a distributed mess, it is eternally broken.
brodock··on FTC sues to block Nvidia-Arm merger
I never got more then 3 hours with any previous intel mac, doing "normal" development.
brodock··on FTC sues to block Nvidia-Arm merger
If ARM wants to do business in the US, they also need an entity there.
brodock··on Proposed Bill to Outlaw Bots from Scalping Online Goods [pdf]
> Sony and Microsoft aren't trying to sell you a PS5 or Xbox Series X because it makes them money. In fact, they take a loss on them even in "normal" market conditions.

And yet, they dont seem to care, as they could have implemented a system to limit one console per account sort of solution. I would bet someone is just "working their KPI" at some level.

brodock··on You can't download this image
You could likely pack.and unpack from websockets...
brodock··on Ask HN: Why is there no good open-source LMS?
The problem most LMS face is that they have to cover a variety of personas and automate their worflows. What schools and universities pay for is something that can work more like a CRM than a CMS, and those have to be flexible/configurable etc, which makes it complex to setup.
brodock··on Rancher Desktop, a Docker Desktop Replacement
the opensource monetization playbook is pretty simple: you charge for the higher tier feature that local joe dont need but big corporate management/laywer/compliance mandate.

anything from centralized authentication/auditing/monitoring/provisioning/reporting to checklist certifications gov demands.

brodock··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]
I've tried both anysoftkeyboard and openboard, and liked openboard layout better but wanted swiftkey like support from anysoftkeyboard. Looking at reddit fossdroid I discovered the one fitted me better as a closer to openboard with swiftkey support : FlorisBoard

Less taxes less overall regulation. It adds up having to deal with BS for everything you want to do.
brodock··on Apple to face EU antitrust charge over NFC chip
If their app they have control over your data, so it's easier to track, fingerprint you and milk it a bit more.
brodock··on Timescale Announces New Database Cloud
> I don't want to worry about how that actually works.

The problem is that while you don't want to know you end-up having to. As soon as you hit the limitations you have to workaround it. As soon as what you are doing becomes expensive for reasons you ignored before, you have to go back and rewrite. The only thing is that because it's a Blackbox, you also have to guess and poke it until it does the thing you want.

brodock··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
While I would prefer AMD here, because it's Intel, you get Thunderbolt for free
brodock··on Podman, the open source Docker alternative ported to M1 (Apple Silicon) machines
Docker is open-core.
brodock··on You Need a Novelty Budget (2018)
I like the concept we used at GitLab since beginning: boring solutions. Whenever you have to pick, you pick the boring one. It almost always pays off.
brodock··on How do I turn off the “Try the new Safari” notification?
They should give this as evidence in the Apple vs Epic case.
