broast··on The Benefits of Walking Backwards
I practice backwards walking on incline on the treadmill at the gym, like others. I was once astounded to witness during my very first half marathon some fit young person walk the entire race backwards while eating a bag of chips. I didn't need any more inspiration than that
broast··on Benchmarking GPT-4 Turbo – A Cautionary Tale
Obviously it's a drawback but the silver lining of the small context window is it forces me to decouple everything and have very sensible and strict api's where I just write the docs and it writes the code.
broast··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
Right, a glance at the new Assistant API docs, which seems to mirror ChatGPT in functionality, suggests that the "Assistant" determines which tool to use, or which models to use (code or chat) to generate a response message. The API is limited in that it can't use Vision or generate images, but I imagine that those are just "Tools" too that the assistant has access to.
broast··on Hard-to-swallow truths they won't tell you about software engineer job
To say it's "personality" is a little passive aggressively degrading. These opportunities are not accessible or sensible to everyone all the time.
broast··on Hard-to-swallow truths they won't tell you about software engineer job
In my experience, large estimates are only ever Rough Orders Of Magnitude. Our teams do not pull any work in to be done unless they've broken it down to the smallest estimated components. Anything with a large estimate is inherently inaccurate and not ready to plan around.

The situation you described seems quite broken

broast··on Seeing like a bank
I find it very hard to tolerate teams that say an issue isn't on them if they aren't pointing to evidence that indicates where they think the issue is. If you think it's not on you but it affects something within your responsibility, you're still on the hook until you prove it.

broast··on Potato Diet Riff Trial: Sign Up Now, Lol
As Vincent Van Gogh once said, "I'd rather die of potassium than of boron."
broast··on Ask HN: Post-LLM's, do you create web applications much more quickly?
This may be a bold claim and it's hard to quantify, but based on weekly output I think it has sped up my development by 50%-80%, between researching technologies with chatgpt4, coming up with designs and code, copilot filling in the blanks, and gpt4 helping with troubleshooting. These are things that used to take me hours of scouring the web and docs, time spent on proofs of concepts, and additional trial and error- which has largely disappeared.

With the amount of time and effort saved I generally feel more confident about being able to create scripts or programs to solve problems or create art as a second nature, rather than having to treat each idea as a large project.

Similarly I have seen my brother go from someone who has never programmed to doing beautiful data analysis in python thanks to gpt4, for his own side projects. The speed in which he's learned has really impressed me. Makes me think that this technology will introduce many new programmers quickly.

broast··on The .ing top-level domain
I don't really get godaddys pricing on these or what exactly they buy you. They're claiming this price is to preregister to maximize your chance to own it. There is a base rate of $19.99 per year but depending on what word you enter, it quotes up to $12k

Bang.ing = 12k; Smash.ing = 3k; Gni.ing = 100; Whyaresomecheaper.ing = 19.99

broast··on DreamCraft3D: Hierarchical 3D Generation with Bootstrapped Diffusion Prior
Interestingly most of the artifacts, like the chicken and waffles one, are on the texture and not on the mesh.
broast··on Reality Labs has lost $11.4B during 2023 (there's still one quarter left)
I do think AR is the Oculus's best feature and most exciting for games.
broast··on Self-Checkout Is a Failed Experiment
This seems crazy to me. I have one of these issues maybe once every 50 times I use a self checkout. And I think could tolerate much more of that before I consider a cashier interaction a better experience.
broast··on Grind – A first person shooter for Amiga 500
As i understand 3D was considered an afterthought for the Sega Saturn, their 1995 flagship console, only adding a separate processor for 3d late into the design. This made the 3d capabilities of the Saturn very hard to program for.
broast··on Ask HN: Have you been affected by layoffs?
I've worked at the same company for all 10 years of my career. The company has been through a few rounds of major layoffs that I've somehow survived. It has affected me in that, for one, I'm always afraid that if I ever stop being "indispensable" to whatever on-going projects that I'll be let go. For now instead I've been promoted to manager. The other way it affects me is it increases the work and responsibilities for those who stay on. We're constantly scrambling and understaffed so we always wish we had those people back. We have thin teams to support a giant product that a larger team of ex-employees wrote, while having to on-board the next round of cheap resources.
broast··on Salesforce is hiring over 3k people, despite axing 10% of staff
I feel there was a lot of goalpost moving to convince us that we didn't just go through a recession such as during the first two quarters of 2022.
broast··on Phaser: A fast, fun and free open source HTML5 game framework
I've made a couple toy projects with Phaser, after comparing other Javascript based 2d engines. Phaser is the most fully featured amongst them, and javascript game engines are great for any experienced web developer with minimal game development experience to make browser-based 2d games easily. Phaser specifically has many examples and docs to work from.

These days I also feel like my workout playlists might as well be randomly generated dance music.

I'm not sure if the suggestion is that all work should be online, or if all desktop apps should be portable.

broast··on On being ready to die, and yet also now being able to swallow ice cream
Shrooms helped me quit alcohol. Drank for 10 years every night, took shrooms twice in my life, never drank again after the second time. That was many years ago. I guess there are some things more useful than an accurate model of reality?
broast··on The super wealthy have their own exclusive versions of Amazon, Tinder, Instagram

broast··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
As a programmer that likes to paint, I think the difference is that web pages are a visually artistic medium. Artists that have unique fine detailed visions often feel the need to use low levels tools to perfectly achieve those visions. I guess this this applies more to individuals than teams however.
broast··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
That's sad to hear. Good CSS with an intuitive DOM structure is simple to achieve yet so powerful. Hate to see devs give up that power.
broast··on What's new in Llama 2 and how to run it locally
Any information about how long it takes to achieve a fine tune comparable to OpenAI's current fine tunes of ada models? On consumer hardware vs cloud? OpenAI's fine tune times are on the order of hours for tens of thousands of samples, but expensive. Any information on the effort and time involved in fine tuning compared to OpenAI's current process would be appreciated.
broast··on Remote work requires communicating more, but less frequently
My team does collaborative sessions twice a week with the whole team, and has a game session once a month. Between all the rest of the meetings, and between the important work we get done through chat, I feel that we do get to know each other and enjoy the time we spend together online. Plus we have public and private social chats full of devs of relatively the same level or age groups where coworkers feel comfortable chatting about sensitive topics. I feel socially fulfilled by this but I can't know if everyone else does.
