britneybitch··on Docker-OSX: Run macOS VM in a Docker
I hate to give Apple any ideas... but I've always wondered why macOS/iOS support falling back to software rendering, when all of their devices ship with a known GPU configuration. Without that fallback, getting the OS running on non-Apple hardware would take a lot more work.
britneybitch··on Analog Chess
I imagine it's pretty powerful to put your queen on the corner of 4 squares so it can capture along two ranks and two files.
britneybitch··on Fuckup Nights – Series of events where stories of failure are shared
At least it's on-brand.
britneybitch··on FTX pre-mortem overview
If I knew I only had a few weeks/months of freedom left, I'd spend my time doing something other than writing blog posts.
britneybitch··on Windows OS Security
Last I checked, mDNS didn't support Windows (requirement for our household) but it looks like it does now. I'll play with it next time I set up a new machine.
britneybitch··on Windows OS Security
> NETBIOS is still used in modern stuff, no?

Even as a Linux guy I like to have netbios enabled since it gives you automatic DNS entries for all the hostnames on your network. I love being able to `ssh me@my-nas` without having to deal with hosts files and static IPs.

britneybitch··on Windows OS Security
No security key, just my face. That link also seems to say it can be used without an online account. Hence my question.
britneybitch··on The CPSC is on a mission that has nothing to do with safety
There's also losses when transporting electricity. A pipe can be made perfectly airtight, but a wire cannot be made perfectly efficient*

*Yes I know about superconductors, that doesn't apply here

britneybitch··on The CPSC is on a mission that has nothing to do with safety
https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-should-it-cost-instal...

> It typically costs between $400 and $1,500 to install a range hood, with the average being $750. Installing a ductless range or a replacement range hood with existing ductwork falls on the lower end. Installing a ducted range hood with new ductwork comes in near the high end.

britneybitch··on The CPSC is on a mission that has nothing to do with safety
To be fair the problems with gas stoves have been known for a while now. It's even made its way to HN a few times. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25332332
britneybitch··on Windows OS Security
> Connecting with Microsoft accounts is only useful to enable Windows Hello. Otherwise, use local accounts only.

I have a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 and a local-only account, and I log in with Windows Hello. Is that unusual or deprecated in Windows 11 or something?

britneybitch··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
Likely OpenAI wants to retain control of their company. If they keep 51%, they have a majority stake.
britneybitch··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%
Fair enough. I was criticizing their consumer side and the exchange specifically. I don't know anything about their business products.
britneybitch··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%
Afaik they support the backwards-compatible parts, but nothing new. I'm talking specifically about "Receive to P2WPKH/P2WSH" in this chart:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bech32_adoption#Exchanges

britneybitch··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%
Coinbase is technologically kind of a joke. Their matching engine is crap. They haven't even adopted bech32. They just do the bare minimum to keep things working for 99% of users, and for the unlucky 1% they follow the same customer support strategy as Google (aka automated emails but no actual humans). Unfortunately Coinbase is YC and they do a lot of marketing, so people who are just getting started tend to think they're a frontrunner.

If you want an exchange that keeps up with the ecosystem you should use someone else. Kraken qualifies: https://blog.kraken.com/post/13502/kraken-now-supports-insta...

britneybitch··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
To change the algorithm, all three of miners, users, and nodes would have to agree to the change. If there is any disagreement, the network continues running under current consensus rules.

In fact, a majority of miners did try to strongarm a fork 5 years ago, and they failed, because the users did not agree. There was even been a book written about it. https://www.amazon.com/Blocksize-War-controls-Bitcoins-proto...

If they tried again, they would fail again -- literally nobody would agree to a fork whose purpose is to enrich miners at the users' expense.

britneybitch··on Canada buys 88 F-35 fighter jets for $14.2B
88 is also the number of keys on a piano. Maybe Canada is a big fan of Beethoven? Or maybe they just bought the exact number they needed without worrying what conspiracy theories internet commenters would dream up.
britneybitch··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
Alan Kay was one of the few people in 1974 qualified to make predictions about computers. I'd compare that to Andreas Antonopoulos making predictions about bitcoin in 2011. I wouldn't trust your average journalist's predictions in either situation.
britneybitch··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
I think he means the compelling aspect is its fixed monetary policy. Gold deposits can be discovered (Uganda) or asteroids mined. Governments actively change their monetary policy. But bitcoin, for the first time in history, sets monetary policy in stone and gives all participants perfect information (in the game theoretic sense). I'm not saying that's overall good or bad, but it certainly makes predicting the future easier!
britneybitch··on Ask HN: Did HN just start using Google recaptcha for logins?
When it comes down to it, between Cloudflare and Recaptcha, I think Cloudflare is the lesser of two evils.
britneybitch··on Ask HN: Did HN just start using Google recaptcha for logins?
There are alternatives:

Unfortunately if you're a user (as opposed to a website author) you don't get a choice.

britneybitch··on Furby source code (1998)
Is this available anywhere in plaintext format? I see a txt file but it looks like it was OCR'd from the ebook.
britneybitch··on Shorting Tether
Even if your premise is right, your timing has to be right too. The SP500 has doubled since 2014 which lines up with the traditional 7% per year. Meanwhile they're paying 12% per year to short, so their approach is a compounded 22% worse[1] than VTSAX-and-chill (before even considering capital risk). This is still gambling, just not in the usual direction.

britneybitch··on Can ads be GDPR compliant?
The article makes a big assumption that ads cannot exist without privacy violations, but that's simply not true. Print ads have existed for longer than the internet, and they're chosen based on the content, not the reader. If I'm reading an article about guitars, show me an ad for a guitar or pedal or amp. Easy. That would already be better than 99% of today's "targeted" ads.

britneybitch··on Will You Help Me Repair My Door [video]
I watched that video when this was going around on reddit recently. That "white supremacists on my premises" hook is one of the slickest rhymes I've heard in a while.
britneybitch··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
We wasted 5-6 figures of salary dollars lovingly building those clusters and the automation surrounding them. We had blue-green zero downtime deploys, but no customers who would notice any downtime to begin with. I think the CTO just wanted k8s on his resume.

In one afternoon (at most), I could have written a script to deploy our demo with docker compose over ssh. Sure, docker compose won't scale forever, but their runway didn't last forever either.

britneybitch··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
I recently installed arch and when you select i3 it makes you choose between i3-wm and i3-gaps. This led me down a bit of a rabbit hole, but in the end I was happy to find I didn't have to choose between forks after all!
britneybitch··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
If you're looking along a vertical split and you see:

  <window> <active-border-color> <window>
it's not clear whether the border is "pointing" left or right. However if you see:

  <window> <active-border-color> <gap> <inactive-border-color> <window>
It is clear the active border belongs to the left window.
