brighter2morrow··on When Having Friends Is More Alluring Than Being Right
It's blind faith if its only presentation is snarky commentary.
brighter2morrow··on Thamugadi, a Roman outpost in Algeria, was saved by the Sahara
Can't blame the British for Agricural drought. Imagine how many more would have starved without Britain running poor houses there.
brighter2morrow··on The Fifth Generation Computing Project
Wow that is cool, and I feel bad for you because that would be a cool collector's item! Though to be practical, I do prefer nicely bound and polished publications rather than the photocopied and combly bound.
brighter2morrow··on Thamugadi, a Roman outpost in Algeria, was saved by the Sahara
There's 40 million Irish descendants in the US. The Irish weren't wiped out, they just left. Also it's hard to take that concern seriously when today's Irish government has done more to increase foreigner control over Ireland than the British government ever did.

>But anti-belief is scientific if the belief for something requires a complete overturning of scientific principles. It's not just an absence of evidence for something. It isn't "open minded" to say "could be..." to Bigfoot, Nessie, or the like -- it's closed minded because to even consider the idea seriously is to think that ecologists and population geneticists have no idea what the minimum habitat of a large animal is or of the minimum viable population size is.

That doesn't make sense. What you're saying is that "It's closed minded not to have blind faith in a faceless group of people who get to dictate what you can and cannot say."

brighter2morrow··on When Having Friends Is More Alluring Than Being Right
I wonder if there is a name for this effect.

>It can't always just be about being nice, unfortunately. Parents who choose not to vaccinate their children could get us all killed. It's a serious threat.

It's not your job to enforce your views on people. Let the government handle it, no one elected you. At least in the US, the government has proven the best institution to protect the public while also giving due consideration to people's rights.

brighter2morrow··on Thamugadi, a Roman outpost in Algeria, was saved by the Sahara
>Horrible Romans were so violent. What have they ever done for us? Well, besides roads and the aqueduct, but other than that?

Exactly. The same people who claim about colonialism are the same ones who complain about intertribal warfare when we leave. We should be thanking colonialists for bringing Peace to the places they conquered, a peace which has washed away since decolonization.

brighter2morrow··on Web Scraping and Crawling Are Perfectly Legal, Right? (2017)
>In particular, the Court is doubtful that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act may be invoked by LinkedIn to punish hiQ for accessing publicly available data; the broad interpretation of the CFAA advocated by LinkedIn, if adopted, could profoundly impact open access to the Internet, a result that Congress could not have intended when it enacted the CFAA over three decades ago.

I didn't realize original intent could be used in courts. How the heck did "original intent" lead to federal abortion and federal gay marriage when all law in letter and in practice had delegated these questions to the states?

>This was still the main AI textbook in 2014 when I did my MSc in the subject

FYI seminal books don't rotate in and out over a five year timespan, it is still the seminal book and will likely continue to be given all the fuel being burned on neural networks that generate more heat than light.

brighter2morrow··on Facebook Is Dying
I'm concerned about future powers using data to target me and my family for "re-education camps"

brighter2morrow··on Adblocking: How about Nah?
>The problem is that things which are socially valuable - especially journalism, but also a lot of entertainment - are chronically dependent on advertising revenues.

I think calling journalism "socially valuable" is debatable.

brighter2morrow··on Tulsi Gabbard Sues Google for Suspending Ad Account
>Fox News does it all the time.

FB and G are natural monopolies, while Fox News is a branded commodities dealer.

brighter2morrow··on The video game industry can't go on like this
Journalism isn't really an industry so much as a lifestyle for well-to-do people who don't need real jobs

brighter2morrow··on Philosophers should not be sanctioned for their positions on sex and gender
I think we should put things in perspective before going into a moral panic
brighter2morrow··on Philosophers should not be sanctioned for their positions on sex and gender
>We can compare that to the 10 trans people murdered (according to Wiki) just this year alone.

70x more people will be crushed by soda machines this year.

brighter2morrow··on YouTube was launched as a dating site
It's funny how easily the government crushes Christians, but can't do anything about drugs, piracy, or immigration
brighter2morrow··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
>Examples: The new show 'Mr Iglesias' where the main character is a history teacher. In one of the first scenes the history of the US is summed up as 'oppression and slavery'. Many jokes about white people that would be considered racist had they been about any other race. And a whole episode about how the word latino is offensive and it should be changed to latinx.

>In the children sitcom 'No good Nick' a female chef ignores feedback from her employee by accusing him of 'mansplaining'. The daughter accuses the white dad of 'cultural approriation' when he suggests taco Tuesday for the restaurant. And that was only the first minutes of one episode.

These are great examples why I don't watch Netflix. Netflix especially is just TV by the political left and for the political left.

brighter2morrow··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
>Usually when we feel like what we're watching is not political, it's actually because it's simply political in ways that we identify with or do not find offensive.

I'd be interested to see a show that has nationalistic/right-wing assumptions. Any good examples?

brighter2morrow··on Talk: An open-source commenting platform focused on better conversation
Thanks, I assumed something like that for their instance of the platform, but the code is there to launch an independent instance of the platform, if desired.
brighter2morrow··on Talk: An open-source commenting platform focused on better conversation
Yes, I wanted to add automated moderation policies (including but not limited to word filters) to improve conversation on a platform I was considering building, but as I understand it all the algorithms to implement the policies would have to be published with the rest of the site under AGPL
brighter2morrow··on H-1B: Federal judge backs government’s narrower view of ‘specialty occupation’
>Where I work the H1B applicants (who don't get selected) have masters, from a US university, for a degree that applies specifically to their job. These folks should be on the red carpet to US citizenship. They have checked every box.

Job specific degrees are always a boon-doggle and they really shouldn't be getting the jobs their degrees proclaim. School is the time for theory, but these Job-specific degree programs these days are just glorified bootcamps

brighter2morrow··on H-1B: Federal judge backs government’s narrower view of ‘specialty occupation’
>So she had lived in the US for six years and still had to beg the government for permission to change jobs? I had no idea it was this bad.

The purpose of the H1B program is for foreign specialists to do work for which no American worker can be found. It's not for foreigners to come to the US and go job hopping.

brighter2morrow··on Talk: An open-source commenting platform focused on better conversation
It took a few clicks to find the license so here it is: Apache v2. Not bad, I've been looking at open source social network software recently and unfortunately all the widely used ones are AGPL3. I get the benefits but I could find anything reasonably of remotely similar quality that was even GPL3.
brighter2morrow··on The Loneliness Epidemic
>living standards for the average American have regressed in many ways since the 1970s,

With women's entry into the workforce plus the 1964 Hart-Cellar Act's lifting of immigration quotas the workforce more than doubled in the 70s. At that rate how was work compensation ever supposed to keep up? I'm not saying the trade-off wasn't worth it, but you can't 2-3x the labor pool and then pretend we don't know why wages decreased while competition for scare resources increased.
