briantakita··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
There are 6 X-class flares. Solar Flares can cannibalize each other. If the different flares travel at different velocities. Leading to a larger impact. Obviously, we were not able to measure how many solar flares came from the Carrington Event or if this cannibalization occurred.

briantakita··on Simplicity is an advantage but sadly complexity sells better (2022)
I have been hoping that isomorphic JS would take over PHP for a long time. Sadly these complexity gurus have been sucking the oxygen out of the room for over a decade now. I think it's the corporate "front end developers" who caused these problems. Almost like an envy of full stack or back end developers doing the "real engineering". Which drove the desire to have "real engineering" problems on the front end.
briantakita··on Simplicity is an advantage but sadly complexity sells better (2022)
Complexity is like a Ponzi Scheme. Ponzi Schemes are effective with sales. Midwits love Complexity & love Ponzi Schemes. Midwits drive the markets due to their population being large.
briantakita··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
I can see a DEI program as promoting the social values of an institution. A position that I once had was this. If all ethnic groups have a bell curve of intelligence. All things being equal, the ethnic groups would have similar distributions of academic qualifications.

So if a particular ethnic group is disadvantaged in a quantifiable way. Then applying a factor to who is accepted into the academic programs. Would bring in people at the upper ends of the bell curve across the different ethnic/racial groups.

In other words, all things being equal across quantifiable ethnic/racial opportunity. This would bring in the top tier candidates across all ethnicities/racial groups. And if all ethnicities/racial groups are equal in intelligence. Then it would bring in the top tier candidates across *all* ethnicities/racial groups.

briantakita··on Megaconstellations like SpaceX's could weaken Earth's magnetic field, atmosphere
> @dang can we please update this title to actually reflect the source title: "Controversial paper claims satellite 'megaconstellations' like SpaceX's could weaken Earth's magnetic field and cause 'atmospheric stripping.' Should we be worried?"

I tried to keep the same name as the article, but had to shorten it due to HN's character restrictions. The shortening could be interpreted to sensationalize. But it's purely intended to include all relevant elements in the title. While within the character limit. I tried & this was the best I could do.

I was hoping that the word *could* would imply the speculative nature of the article.

briantakita··on Getting the Grid to Net Zero
> These discussions are starting to worry me. There isn't much point to talking about the climate until we can start looking at this issue as a matter of "how do we increase human flourishing," which should be a universal goal for all of us.

Whatever you do, do not mention that the US Military & MIC is the #1 producer of CO2. And do not suggest that we reduce the CO2 emissions of the US military & MIC. It will make the people here angry. We can tolerate a little bit of talk about private jets flying into Davos. With each per capita attendee using the CO2 of >1000 people * years. So they can talk about "saving the planet". But not too much.

Rules for thee but not for me. Own nothing & be happy. Do not forget that.

briantakita··on Getting the Grid to Net Zero
Is it as efficient as recycling plastic bottles? Effectively in the landfill & ocean.

Theory & marketing science fiction are all well & good...But let's have some success with existing recycling programs before assuming that everything is going to work perfectly according to someone's vision.

If you are actually serious about reducing CO2 emissions, let's start with the biggest producer of CO2. The US Military & MIC. Cause I don't see any solar powered military vehicles, munitions, or ordinances anytime in the next 100 years.

How ironic when it's time for the US Military. With it's gas guzzling transports. To be used to enforce environmental statutes. Against the rural/suburban peasants who demand their own grid.

briantakita··on Bun 1.1
> - The built-in web server is sufficient for small projects and avoids the need to pull in various dependencies.

ElysiaJS is a good library when you do need a bit more with the routing + middleware. It has great benchmarks as well.

briantakita··on Bun 1.1
I found Bun to be faster. Monorepo support is a bit kludgy though. Once you know of the workarounds, it's ok. See my comment on https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/issues/5413#issuecomment-1956...

AFAIK, Pnpm monorepos do not follow standard npm. Bun does follow standard npm monorepos.

Pnpm's feature to override dependency versions is nice for legacy projects with many 3rd party dependencies. Not sure if Bun has the same feature. I mostly use it on greenfield projects with dependencies that I control.

briantakita··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
Browser environments don't have EventEmitter. Different event APIs between browsers & nodejs. A library (3rd party or custom) is needed to make event code isomorphic.
briantakita··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
I was not aware of trkl. Well done! I wrote rmemo (Reactive Memo) which solves the same problems & is a similar size. Different semantics though.

https://github.com/ctx-core/rmemo

Nanostores is also small https://github.com/nanostores/nanostores.

And if you only need reactivity in the browser (not server side), VanJS is small & includes reactive primitives. https://vanjs.org/

briantakita··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
Perhaps mentioning the tradeoffs between a simple easy to explain example vs a more obvious comprehensive example. With links to more complex code bases? With a before & after?
briantakita··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
> Anything wrong with that?

It only works in browser environments.

briantakita··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
Since reactivity is not baked into Javascript. Adding reactivity is going to add abstraction overhead. It's meant to be used if it's needed. Not necessarily a default way to work with state.

In my experience, the big benefit is the ability to make reactive state modular. In an imperative style, additional state is needed to track changes. Modularity is achieved using abstraction. Only use when needed.

> Sounds like they want premature memoization

It's a balance to present a simple example that is applicable. Cases where reactivity have a clear benefit tend to be more complex examples. Which is more difficult to demonstrate than a simple, less applicable example.

briantakita··on Context: The Missing Feature of Programming Languages
Context + reactive memo functions is a powerful way to manage global state. Context namespaces adds more resolution to grouping Context state. These patterns have served me well over the past decade in javascript/typescript development.

I created ctx-core/be[1] & ctx-core/rmemo[2] to provide Contexts, be_ functions, & reactive memos. It has been a powerful set of abstractions for application code, build logic, devops, animation orchestration, etc.

I would love to use a systems programming language that supports Contexts & compiles fast. Jai looks interesting but it's still in closed beta. With Zig, there was a proposal to dependency inject a context which contains the allocator[3]. It didn't go anywhere though. Golang has Context[4]. It compiles fast but I would like a fast language without a Garbage Collector to compliment js/ts for expensive computations. Perhaps Rust could work but the compile time is slower than ideal.

At this point, Golang seems to be the best compliment as it addresses expensive computations. Hopefully a productive system programming language without the GC will be available to have good support for contexts.

briantakita··on American News Lost Its Nerve
I'm disappointed that this was a partisan piece. The behavior described is bi-partisan. The news agencies described as "gutted" behaved in abusive manners against ordinary people of the opposite political perspective.

When one partisan side blames the other side for something. It's reasonable to expect the blame is cover for the same actions in reverse. Some sort of projection. I'm about to break out my nano violin for the unemployed hatchet "journalists". Anyone who wants to claim the moral high ground should at least take a broader analysis of the rules. And apply the same rules to everyone.

As far as I'm concerned, it's time for these slander propagandists to pay the piper. They should live with the the same consequences they preached a few years ago. When they had more power.

But we live with rules, so they are free to form their own independent channels.

briantakita··on Nvidia founder tells Stanford students their high expectations is a hindrance
Attention needs to be paid to foundational primitives that support a more elaborate architecture. An elaborate architecture built on low quality primitives lacks integrity. This integrity issues will need to be addressed one way or another. Better to have a feedback loop to improve these primitives.

Hardship is feedback to address these fundamental primitives to create integrity with the big picture. If someone builds a foundation on froth, don't be surprised when the foundation collapses. Entitlement does not provide value.

Aircrete, Hempcrete, & foam housing are alternatives. All are inexpensive, have good insulation, & can form interesting single story houses.
briantakita··on The internet isn't dying, it's changing
I see AI as a tool to express creative intent in ways not practical before it came about. It could be naivite full of unintended consequences. But it's hard to not focus on the benefits of the latest tech.

The current crop of tools are improving productivity in developing better software. Which makes me happy.

briantakita··on Boeing whistleblower found dead in US
> Then don't say it.

Some things need to be said. Some people need to do a better job. I hate saying it because I want America & it's founding principles to succeed. Boeing's performance & response to accountability is bad.

China's methods are effective at stopping corruption dead. Their managerial class seems to understand the stakes of public safety. They don't mess around. They had to deal with corruption & it's destabilizing effects on many levels throughout their system.

In the American system, it's worse if nobody talks about corruption. It's clear that the western managerial class has become powerful. Some in the managerial class has no interest in self-regulation. Nor will these people work to benefit the public. What happens when these people harm the public? Like what has happened over & over the past century.

As long as there are no real consequences, this behavior will only be more bold & egregious. Like how a spoiled child takes advantage of parents. I would love to be proven wrong & am completely open to good faith efforts to correct these problems.

Yes, I agree with you. I was doing double speak. Many things of public interest are nudged "off the front page". Promoting Political Bread & Circuses instead. I think the networks of the Managerial Class are tight. Due to shared interests, values, & upbringing. So I'm not surprised to see the circling of wagons. I'm more surprised that this post was not flagged yet.

briantakita··on World War II 'rumor clinics' helped America battle wild gossip
> Since our enemies "used" that word, you are only one if you also live in the past tense.

Kindof like the English speaking people of Japanese descent in the Western US circa 1940. Stripped of their property & sent to internment camps. I hope history does not repeat itself in present & future "propagation" efforts. But hope & reality are two different things.

I would love to meet the "we" or "us" that is doing the propaganda. To propagate what I think about their efforts of course.

briantakita··on World War II 'rumor clinics' helped America battle wild gossip

Who is "our" & "us"? If it's not me, am I "the enemy"?
