100% - I can see how it might be great for FB where they have the capacity to optimize but without that engineering capacity it seems like it would turn into a net negative.
brentm··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2022)
SEEKING FREELANCER | Remote or Stamford, CT

Hi, I’m the founder of company called Merchbro. We're a bootstrapped and profitable mass customization e-commerce company. We're looking for 1 or 2 freelancers (also open to full time and small agencies) to help out on various projects. We need to expand our product offerings which requires building out a new design tool in React, fixing a bunch of old architecture issues, and more. Ideal candidates would be used to working on small teams (only 1 other developer at current time), experienced working across the stack (Rails backend, React frontend) and with digging into a lightly tested/not well documented code base and helping to clean it up. Bonus points if you could see yourself growing into a full time position leadership role and would be interested in helping us staff up over the next couple of years.

If interested please email me with some details on your background and why you think you'd be a good fit for this role: brent@merchbro.com.

Thanks!

brentm··on CNN+ streaming service is shutting down a month after launching
If there was a news bundle app: CNN, Fox, MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, etc. I think that would do fairly well in the long run. I know it would send me over the edge and make me feel better about getting rid of cable.

I think almost no one with cable is looking for more talking heads. Since the back catalog has a value of effectively zero their main audience has to be cord cutters. I do think that would work for CNN+ eventually but it would probably take years to get to scale.

In general though: Single network news subscriptions like this encourage behavior that is a net negative for society. Right now it's hard enough to convince people to change the channel and step out of their bubble to form their own opinions. The last thing society needs is for everyone to only have access to one news channel. Especially one where the viewer is a direct customer as it's only going to encourage these stations to give the viewers more and more of the opinions they already agree with. This will just make people even more opinionated which then drives our politicians to continue down this path of zero compromise and zero legislative productivity.

I don't have a good read on the average Russian's opinion of Putin but I think a major risk here is these sanctions & pull outs having the opposite effect. If the main point of the effort is to drive a wedge between Putin and the people he really may be able to use this as a way to make it more of an "us" against "them" thing. Which then keeps him in power and he remains a risk for the world. Either way though it will likely work to depress their economy and make it more difficult for them to wage war on a larger scale that just takes a while to play out.

Everyone keeps talking WW3 but the more I think about it the less worried I become. I think the only real risk to that is if Putin literally is an irrational mad man. As in he is hell bent on destroying the west even if the price is his own country and maybe the world. This is possible but not that likely. When you follow that logic he also isn't likely to go after a NATO country and expand the war because he can't win and rational people want to win. It's entirely possible that the yes men he has built into the Kremlin told him this whole thing was going to be a cake walk because they were afraid to tell him otherwise and had no idea. He may want this to end as much as the next guy but now needs to save face and show something for the massive problems that he created.

brentm··on Not Another Framework
It would be really interesting to see what the conversion funnel looks like for a new framework like this.
brentm··on Is old music killing new music?
I agree with this sentiment and it feels right to me personally but I think to know how much consumption is changing we'd benefit from seeing this broken out by age demographics. If the teens are listening to older music at the same rate as the late 30s/40s then that is certainly a problem for the music industry. Otherwise this might just be driven by the streaming adoption. We couldn't quantify this stuff before when everyone was listening to music on CDs, mp3s etc.

brentm··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Where to start really depends on what your goals are but you mention no knowledge of business. You'd probably quickly realize you know more than you give your self credit for. If you want to check out a classic primer there is as book called The Personal MBA. It's a super high level overview/quick read and does a good job covering a bunch of basic business topics.
brentm··on U.S. government owes over $100M for TSA's patent infringement
It's crazy that patents can be granted for 'inventions' that are nothing more than common sense. Being the first mover on hiring a patent attorney and filing the paperwork should not be rewarded.

I suppose drawing a definitive line where common sense ends and invention begins is difficult so we end up with the current system.

brentm··on Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return
No, people just moved on for a better product (FB, etc).
brentm··on Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return
They are an easy target. FB scandal stories garner a lot of public interest and so there is a financial incentive for news orgs to dedicate staff to the FB beat. Not enough people care about Reddit, HN, etc. Even Twitter comparatively. They also don't have the same level of influence.

There are obviously issues that FB amplifies but the heart of the problem in my opinion is people. People like information that confirms what they already believe, other people are greedy and like to take advantage people for personal gain. It was easy when FB just had to worry about removing porn and gore. Now the line is much grayer. Half of the people think some piece of content must be removed ASAP and the other half call removing that exact same content censorship.

brentm··on 23andMe to merge with VG Acquisition Corp. to become publicly-traded company
One factor is predictability in initial price. The SPAC & company negotiate a fixed price to go public. With an IPO the company begins the process with a valuation in mind but a lot of it still comes down to the roadshow investors, for better or worse.
brentm··on AOC considering hearing over RobinhoodApp decision to block purchasers of GME
"The trades that Robinhood blocked were objectively bad trades" Seriously? Do you want brokers making this call? That is not their job. Let people learn the hard way, that is what the markets are for. Now, don't let them do it on margin but if you're going to plow your savings into GME at $450 a share then I am sorry but it's your own fault for not doing any homework at all.
brentm··on Leaked memos Amazon warn 'be vigilant' due to threats to blow up data centers
The "time ago" for comments on Parler was always a little suspect to me. I was poking around on there and noticed how so many of the comments were from seconds ago. The timestamps could be legit but it also seemed like maybe an engagement hack. You could argue someone might be more likely to respond to a comment that they think someone literally just wrote.
brentm··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
I saw multiple posts & comments at the end of December with people literally calling for the murder of members of Congress on Jan 6th. I reported them when I noticed. I checked back after the Capitol Riots and the posts were still there. If they had any moderation it was not at all effective even for the most obviously unacceptable content.

brentm··on Statecharts: A Visual Formalism for Complex Systems (1987) [pdf]
You'd probably still call it a state machine if that is what it's doing. Maybe not well implemented but it also depends. State machines are tricky to get right.
brentm··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help
It looks like they started by selling a Java tool called IntelliJ Renamer. Likely just bootstrapped that and then reinvested the profits.

They only switched over to the SaaS model maybe five or six years ago, before that you'd buy one copy the application and then buy a newer version when you felt like it. Now you're basically buying a new copy every year no matter what, just like everything else.
