breakpointalpha··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
Fun fact, I was out late last night at a local upscale gas station. Think clean, well lit, and modern touchscreen sandwich ordering. NOT a dirty, broken down place. You'd expect the tech to work flawlessly in a place like this.

I was second in line behind a younger guy who asked to use his iPhone tap to pay, the clerk shrugged and pointed to the card scanner. Guy taps his phone and the scanner bricks, hard. The young man was somewhat embarrassed for holding up the line and sheepishly dug some old school greenbacks out of his pockets to pay before slinking out the door.

The clerk confusedly tried without luck to recover the register, before giving up and asking me and the other 6 people in line to move to another register. I had a little mini panic because all I had was a card, no cash, and about $20 worth of snacks. What do we do when electronics fail?

breakpointalpha··on Please make a dumb car
Bought a Mazda CX5 a few months ago.

Thank god Mazda currently has the "driver first" mentality.

NO Touchscreen!

Main input is through a comfortable knob in front of the arm rest, where your hand naturally lands when resting.

Gauge cluster is digital, but analog type dials for spedo, etc.

AC, Power Cool/heated seats, driver assists, auto-park, all controlled via BUTTONS!

It's a modern miracle and one of the big reasons I chose to buy it over a new Tesla Model 3.

"Horse and rider" is truly a wonderful concept... Go Mazda!

I can't help but marvel at how terrible the OpSec on display is here.

Hoards of cash in drawers and bags?

Open laptops with logged in crypto accounts?

Maybe they only showed the few dummies on the team that didn't follow protocol, but all it takes is one idiot to ruin the whole "teamwork" vibe...

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
> I'm not thinking of quitting over this or anything, but it seriously bums me out. I don't know if I have a future at this company if the boss thinks I'm not a good dev, and I really like it here. A month or so ago they added someone else to my project and I trained him on my code, and he's super smart and capable, and I'm thinking that now they probably feel that they could fire me if they wanted and not lose much.

You need to start applying to other companies immediately. Please take this as a MAJOR warning that they are setting you up to fire you. There are many reasons why they might do this, but you've ALREADY TRAINED YOUR REPLACEMENT. Changes are good that other person is either cheaper or better qualified and they want to free the chair/pay up for them.

I've been in this exact situation and it's better to just hit the job boards as fast and hard as possible. Given 100 years, this manager wouldn't change their opinion of you. You were blindsided and scolded without your direct manager's involvement. If you "stay loyal" you'll either be fired or treated the same way over and over. If you have 6 months of Rust and Computer Vision experience it should be pretty easy to find new work right now. This is the best job market in decades, take advantage!

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
They just gave you a huge sign that they want to let you go. The paperwork has already been filed, they are just waiting the legally appropriate amount of time to fire you.

Clean up your resume now and start applying for new jobs.

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
1. You need to look for a team/project with more developers. It's hell to be a solo developer when you don't also control the "promised" features and timelines.

I've worked 6 positions for 5 different companies over 12+ years. Two of those as a solo developer. Neither had upper management promising things I could deliver on deadlines. I was still fairly stressed out because I was always afraid I wouldn't be able to solve problems by myself. I can't imagine how torturous it would be to have someone with little understanding of code or my personal output making promises that I would have to keep! Look for an out, ASAP, in my opinion.

2. If you target very large organizations, you'll tend to have a lot more slack in delivery pace.

Nearly everyone that works in the Fortune 50 or at a major US university works slower.

I've worked for both, the feeling is just different. I think it's because everyone expects delays, paperwork, and process bureaucracy at every step. This gives you lots of breathing room to take a more pastoral approach to what's considered "productive". I think the work from home revolution has further enhanced that. I can say for sure in the 7 years of being a "senior full stack engineer" at a major org, I've worked after 5 pm less than 10 times.

This isn't a bad thing, as typically you can trade time for less risk to the company. "I need an extra day to make sure this won't embarrass us / leak data / hurt customers / etc."

A better example would be traveling through a country known to execute people for their sexual orientation.

I'm only thinking ethically, it's better to use technology to protect people from prosecution for victimless "crimes" than to support murder. ;)

breakpointalpha··on Open-plan offices reduce face-to-face interactions (2018)
I'm considering an offer that would introduce a 30+ minute commute and an open office plan back into my life.

I've been working 100% from home for the last 8 months and rather enjoy it.

Should I just hold out for another remote job? I have about 10 months of burn left in my bank account...

breakpointalpha··on Developer Survey Results 2019
I think I'm about to go into the offer phase with a company. I've already been told by the recruiter that the salary is 80k. Looking at the Python results, I'm honestly thinking about sending them this dev survey. Like, "just so we're clear, you are intentionally underpaying?"
breakpointalpha··on Network Determines Success More Than People Realize
This is a real problem that I have faced on more than one occasion.

Best advice I can offer is "clubs", but I've had mixed success.

By clubs I mean, tennis clubs, golf clubs, social clubs, etc. This is where church used to have a big part to play in the social fabric of America.

My eyes were opened to this when I was hanging out with a group of Russian foreign exchange students in college.

Packed it all up into 10-15 suitcases for transit back to their home towns.

breakpointalpha··on My Parents Give Me $28k a Year
I'm sorry if someone mislead you into thinking wealth was, or could be, fair.

Your analogy is so far off the mark on how wealth is created, it's laughable.

$10 billion in family wealth is almost never held in cash, it's invested in companies, land, and other ventures. Wherever an investment is made, people are put to work collecting salaries and benefits, generally speaking.

You've made a gross oversimplification, and a misleading one at that.

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: How do you market yourself at your mid-30's?
I don't know you, so don't take this personally, but you should also consider it may not be your tech chops, but some other soft skill that's holding you back...

You may want to try some practice interviews like on https://interviewing.io/

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: How do you market yourself at your mid-30's?
He should honestly start a job board just for 35+ year olds looking for tech work...
breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: How do you market yourself at your mid-30's?
Are you applying for junior, mid-level, or senior positions?

If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely be targeting mid-level plus. Your experience plus age makes your decision making more valuable. It's possible you are undershooting the mark.

As others have said, maybe aim for some low hanging fruit dev jobs. Wordpress is everywhere, with your skills, you should be able to get one of those easy. Also, don't bother listing all that other stuff on a Wordpress application, just put that you have 11 years of experience and put a few Wordpress projects. You can replace "wordpress" with any other low hanging fruit.

Spaced learning really works. I've started to slowly convert python, sql, and postgres docs to flash cards in Anki.

Anki's implementation has some rough edges, but for $0/mon for multi-device use, it's an amazing way to get your feet wet with this learning technique.

breakpointalpha··on Domino-effect of climate events could move Earth into a ‘hothouse’ state
Man, you don't have any faith in human resilience?

An average global temperature increase of 4c is bad, but survivable easily with modern technology and good planning.

80% of the worlds population live within 50 miles of a coast line. There's still plenty of room inland.

breakpointalpha··on The Case Against an Autonomous Military
The arguments presented are fairly weak.

The two main suppositions are that "AI can be used to target racial groups." and "AI weapons could end up in the hands of ISIS, et. al."

While both of these are true, and certainly cause for concern, the author greatly ignores the game theory aspect of AI powered weapons.

Namely, if our enemies are building them, we must too.

I'm not trying to fear monger, but US and China are already engaged in an AI arms race. It's illogical for either party at this point to stop development.
