Jev, or 'Jevlikes', will go a long way towards trustable systems. There are demos of running every prompt through the first pass filter of Jev "Is this unsafe? y/N"

Seems to be that Jev is a "reflex" system for AI, where current LLMs are higher level thinking. Computers can now flinch!

Install Cold Turkey site blocker; block all social media channels with a slop "feed". (Facebook, instagram, reddit, etc.)

Youtube subs only to Science, History, Cozy content. Aggressively unfollow click bait.

Discord only with close personal friends who are chill.

Play single player games, or multiplayer games only with close personal friends.

The internet doesn't have to connect you with hordes of terminally online droolers.

Valve has annual profits in the billions, they invest in the future of VR too.
breakpointalpha··on If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right
Asking for proof of improvement is a very rational reaction to the last three to five years of constant AI hype cycling.

It's a simple question that seems to make AI cheerleaders really mad.

"How are you measuring improvement."

I use AI for coding every day and see it fail all the time, I'm a seasoned developer and early tech adopter just like everyone else on HN. I'm still very skeptical because of how often these systems just miss. It's gambler's ruin on a very large scale, we remember the hits and forget the misses.

breakpointalpha··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
Presumably the guard is supposed to keep the "bad people" out, so that kids can be safe.

Instead, the Mom is placed on probation for seven years and will have monthly visits from CPS.

breakpointalpha··on Florida revokes permits for license plate readers on state highways
At a minimum a judge signed warrant should be required for any data access.

Second, a third-party annual security and data audit, with power to revoke licenses if findings aren't mitigated within a reasonable time frame.

Finally, a civilian oversight committee with real power to sanction bad actors.

breakpointalpha··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
It seems reasonable that Axon, the #1 police body camera vendor, would benefit from a national social media wave of hate towards it's competitor Flock.

People who get angry enough to tear down the Flock cameras in their area get rounded up and classified by the Feds as "leftist terrorists".

Axon gets a major boost to it's revenue by landing fat .gov contracts for it's own version of 24/7 surveillance.

Government employees who approve the contracts get rich on insider trading.

breakpointalpha··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
Personally the line for me is a human police officer with reasonable judgement and accountability.

If an officer was standing next to every Flock camera in America, the public would be hyper aware of the situation we are now in.

Mass, warrantless, and perpetual surveillance is incompatible with liberty and unacceptable to the vast majority of Americans.

It has to be stopped, or we are doomed.

breakpointalpha··on How Cops Are Trying to Hide Their Use of Flock
I asked my local sheriff about the Flock cameras that are located on my street.

He swore that they were only "ALPR" (Automatic License Plate Readers) and "definitely not Flock cameras".

I went and looked again, and they definitely are Flock cameras, so that's nice.

breakpointalpha··on Linux Desktop Market Share Surpasses 10% in North America
He is likely quite wealthy now, from his long career on YT.

I'm sure that many of the things you see as "work" are hired out. Video editing, thumbnails, etc. Even hiring multiple Linux developers to help him get through a tricky spot in the build would be reasonable for someone "retired" but with a lot of money.

breakpointalpha··on Destroying a Community with a Gigantic "Clogged Vacuum Cleaner"
At a minimum the data center should be responsible for paying for noise mitigation on all houses within a half mile of the site.

That work could be done within a few months, upgrade all the window treatments, replace all doors with solid core, add sound mitigation fencing, etc.

breakpointalpha··on Ford AI hiccups push carmaker to rehire ‘gray beard’ inspectors
A union absolutely can and should protect workers from frivolous layoffs.

If the company tries to layoff 10% "due to AI" the remaining 90% can strike.

History is full of union solidarity vs idiotic management.

breakpointalpha··on Ford AI hiccups push carmaker to rehire ‘gray beard’ inspectors
US software engineers need a union.

If I hadn't already landed a job somewhere else, I would only return with a 20% pay bump and an iron-clad contract.

breakpointalpha··on Anthropic employees accuse Trump administration of targeting them
It's routine and trivial for the US Gov to enforce export controls on non-US based companies.

This "across the border" strategy will not work.

Seagate Singapore was hit with civil penalties and settlements for shipments to Huawei under the Foreign Direct Product Rule.

ZTE, a Chinese company, was criminally prosecuted and settled with U.S. DOJ/BIS in 2017 for violating U.S. export controls and sanctions.

As a pedestrian, can you sell your neighbor's dangerous car?
breakpointalpha··on Tesla Full Self Driving uses bicycle lane in official Denmark approval video
If a driver would get a ticket, shouldn't Tesla also get a ticket?

In the US, drivers kill pedestrians all the time and are barely punished.

Is this the same standard that should be adopted everywhere?

I don't understand why "break the door down" wouldn't be the most immediate course of action by a senior engineer in that situation. I'll get my tools.
breakpointalpha··on US Consumer Price Index up 4.2%
I don't understand this point of view. $140k in a LCOL is a fantastic salary. Median US household income is $83k/yr.

It feels more likely your investment account gains are driving your decisions. Stock gains are also driven by inflation though!

I can sort of understand the feeling though, I just recently got a 2.5% raise for "inflation", which hardly feels like it's making a dent.

breakpointalpha··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
Discord's killer feature is the "hangout" room.

You can see if people are in there and actively talking before you join and that alone encourages spontaneous drop ins.
