breakpointalpha··on Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication
I've heard that the same process of domestication towards "cuteness" has been outlined in human evolution too.

Larger head-size relative to the body, larger eyes, smaller jaws and noses, longer limbs, etc.

Interesting parallels across species towards less aggression, greater pro-social behavior, more physical traits that shout "trust me, I'm harmless."

Almost like pro-social, intelligent team co-operation is a huge advantage compared to solo predatory behavior.

Interesting, I'm running Pop_OS! as well with a 4070 RTX MSI laptop. Can't get Arc Raiders to load, just freezes 15-30 seconds into the launch process no matter what Proton compatibility I choose.
breakpointalpha··on A Fond Farewell
They didn't need to be transactional spaces, they need to be spaces that attract people regularly.

The local chicken farmer who works 16 hours a day to keep his farm running isn't going out of his way three times a week to visit the community center for board game night.

He's definitely in the local Tractor Supply store three times a week though...

It's about creating community where people naturally gather, not creating a gathering space then hoping people show up.

breakpointalpha··on Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani's policies as 'normal'
He's been very clear that he intends on raising taxes to cover the budget shortfall and additional services.

"Zohran’s revenue plan will raise the corporate tax rate to match New Jersey’s 11.5%, bringing in $5 billion. And he will tax the wealthiest 1% of New Yorkers—those earning above $1 million annually—a flat 2% tax (right now city income tax rates are essentially the same whether you make $50,000 or $50 million). Zohran will also implement common-sense procurement reform, end senseless no-bid contracts, hire more tax auditors, and crack down on fine collection from corrupt landlords to raise an additional $1 billion."

We call these people "compliance flies".

Any large enough organization gathers them en mass to cloud real development work with "compliance."

Even more so when there is a bounty payout.

Refundable if the PR/report is accepted.

Or they were raised with terrible and predatory culture. Screwing other people to get ahead is something that is frequently taught in childhood by parents and older role models that were also taught that mentality. We've all seen the Mafia movies and shows, these are family organizations where everyone's Aunts, Cousins, etc. is somehow "connected". There's a big uphill battle for a kid to come up in that environment and turn out like a model citizen. No excuses...

Collusion in live casinos is a real thing for sure, but it's not exactly easy to pull off.

1) Most card rooms these days are 8 or 9 players, so your team would need to be at least 3, maybe 4 to really swing the odds in your favor.

2) You need a subtle but effective way to signal to your team the relative strength of your hand. Think baseball signals, but way more low key. "If I touch my watch, I have an Ace" etc. You'll probably want to mix these up across the hours or days of play.

3) Seats typically do open one at a time, and you want to trickle in your team to avoid suspicion. Higher stakes games, like $5-10, where there are thousands of dollars in front of most players are your goal, and good news is that these are typically more rare so there may be only one table running. Your teammates will have to wait it out, but once at the table, they can stay for hours.

4) You'll never know exactly what your targets are holding, but knowing that your teammates folded a flush draw for example can help you narrow your opponents cards to a smaller range of possibilities. You'll want to position your teammates around the table to create "squeeze" situations where two of the team can trap a target in between.

It takes some creative subtlety, but it can be very hard to impossible to detect collusion in live games.

You don't have to lie to win at poker, you just have to bluff sometimes.

The game is similar to chess when played at a moderate to high level.

breakpointalpha··on Poker fraud used X-ray tables, high-tech glasses and NBA players
The profit from a scheme like this would likely be in the high tens of millions of dollars.

The poker game itself in high-roller situations could be a million plus per night depending on the stakes.

Then there's the whole "you owe the Mafia" angle with NBA players and coaches. It's a pretty clear line to the Mafia making tens of millions of dollars on rigged NBA games.

First, people who are banned from online bookies use "horses" or other not-banned players to place bets for them.

Second, the FBI is targeting real world Mafia members, who will typically be the bookies taking action from others. If they know in advance, through blackmail or collusion that an NBA player or coach will throw a game, they can exploit this versus their entire betting pool for massive wins against the suckers placing bets with them.

breakpointalpha··on America's top companies keep talking about AI – but can't explain the upsides
Your millage may vary, but I just got Cursor (using Claude 4 Sonnet) to one shot a sequence of bash scripts that cleanup stale AWS resources. I pasted the Jira ticket description that I wrote, with a few examples and the script works perfectly. Saved me a few hours of bash writing and debugging because I can read bash, but not write it well.

It seems that the smaller the task and the more tightly defined the input and output, the better the LLMs are at one-shotting.

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
Yes I’m very interested. I had exactly the same idea, but solved it using the “say” command and a random grab from a set of strings.

I’m a Python dev and I’m happy to contribute to a project is you get it started.

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
Yes! I wish there were better tools for getting sound out of the terminal.

I got bored waiting for long running scripts to finish one day and wrote this bash one liner.

Now I can run a command and put a pipe and the zzz alias on the end and it will tell me when it’s finished.

breakpointalpha··on Ex-athletic director arrested for framing principal with AI-generated voice
If I want to do a voiceover of a ten minute video, I can type out the transcript and produce a flawless one-take audio track. This saves hours of time finding a quiet place to record, saying the lines, having a good mic, doing post-recording cleanup to remove coughs or passing airplane noise, multiple takes because I goofed a word up, etc.

I don’t know if this is the best use of the tech we’ve found yet, but it’s already a huge time saver.

breakpointalpha··on Cops still take more stuff from people than burglars do (2021)
Nope.

You can't just walk into any bank branch you have an account with an expect to withdraw 10s of thousands of dollars without notice.

Also, there are tons of people with online only banks. No physical branches at all!

breakpointalpha··on 85% of jobs are filled via networking
Start tiny.

Set a reminder to check your contact list once a week.

Message someone on there you haven't talked to in a while.

Say something nice, hello, how are you, have you seen the latest tech news?

If you make this as easy and routine as brushing your teeth, you will very soon be overflowing with people who know and like you.

Kindness, consistency, and contact are all it takes.

breakpointalpha··on 85% of jobs are filled via networking
You don't have to blog to grow or manage your professional network.

Set a reminder, once a week, to look at your LinkedIn. Ping someone you actually know, just to say hi. This keeps you fresh in their minds as someone who does X, and is still alive.

Finally, if you want to expand your network, just ask these same people if they know anyone else doing X and then send them a hello.

Very low-effort and direct contact is 100x more powerful than a blog post anyway!

breakpointalpha··on Ask HN: What's your favorite GPT powered tool?
I was instantly a big believer in Phind.

It has replaced 95% of my previous DuckDuckGo searches for development info.

I even used it with another developer to solve a mission critical bug based on some very vague symptoms. It's saved so much time, I'll never go back.
