breakall··on Bradley Manning’s Statement
Interesting that Manning tried to contact the Washington Post, but got blown off... Tried the NYTimes, and they didn't return his call. That may say something about the media, but I'm more curious if the reaction by the US government and other officials to the leaks would have been the same if those papers had published the material, instead of Wikileaks?
breakall··on So you think you can tell Arial from Helvetica?
Fun test!

Mattel was also the one that tripped me up.

As the GP said, the caps on the S, C, T, etc were usually the giveaways.

The flourish at the bottom right (not sure the correct term) of the R in TARGET gave me at moment's pause. But each of the logos was customized to an extent.

breakall··on Jack Dorsey: Let's Reconsider Our "Users"
Customer also means something very different from user when you're building line of business software. A "user" works for the business. A "customer" is the user's customer, not your customer.
breakall··on The best interface is no interface
Regarding #2 -- Passbook automatically turns up the brightness on your device[1] to avoid this scenario.

breakall··on If Hemingway wrote JavaScript
I am immediately suspicious of a .xxx link. Any professional writer should avoid this TLD.
breakall··on New Apple maps app under fire from users
One thing that's still missing (or at least well buried) in the mobile version of maps.google.com on iOS is Street View.
breakall··on Google releases standalone Youtube iOS app
But where is the new Google Voice Search for iOS app? The new Search app was supposed to rival Siri. The big tech press splash was weeks ago and claimed it would be out in days! Is Apple embargoing it like they held back the Google Voice for iOS app?
breakall··on Why I’m uninstalling Windows 8
Once the app is already running and visible in the taskbar, you can right-click the icon in the taskbar, and click the link with the same name as the app (e.g. for Google Chrome, the link I'm talking about says "Google Chrome"). This will open a new instance of the app.
breakall··on Why I’m uninstalling Windows 8
I totally agree with this. Each new app that I install prompts a new hunt through the Programs part of the Start menu for where the app might have stashed its icons -- would they be in a new folder with the same name as the app? In a folder with the name of the publisher? In the random dump of icons at the top that don't bother to create a folder for themselves? This leads to typing in the name of the app in the search box and letting Windows do this hunting for me.

Microsoft's UX research found this as well. People prefer pinning apps Windows 7 to the taskbar over the Start menu[1].

The "hit Windows key and type name of app" scenario is preserved quite nicely with the Start screen.

breakall··on New distributed fault-tolerant cloud provider u2601
Works in IE, FF, chrome, and even on iOS! The clouds look different in each browser.

It kinda reminds me of zombo.com!

breakall··on Prepaid Cellphones Are Cheaper. Why Aren't They Popular?
If it's like the Philippines, all the SIM does is get you on the network, but with only a SIM card you can't call, text, or anything. Then you purchase a prepaid card from a convenience store or anywhere with call minutes, text messages, and/or data -- the card has a long code that you plug in to the phone to activate it and associate the minutes etc with your SIM.
breakall··on Apple ignores bug report
Put it another way -- he wants to run and jump at the same time! You know, the way you would in Super Mario on the original NES and every platform game since.
breakall··on Woman Who Couldn’t Be Intimidated by Citigroup Wins $31 Million
They took on immense risk in order to squeeze all the profit they could out of the system.... but faced no consequences as a result of losing on their bets. $45 billion in two installments kept them afloat.

Wouldn't a anarcho-capitalist demand that a market loser like Citi pay the price?

breakall··on What’s the best thumbnail for this page?
The news aggregators use this ambiguity to their advantage -- plenty of times I've seen a innocuous headline shown with a bikini girl thumbnail because that image was a sidebar gallery preview on the source page (or sometimes even an ad!). Any guesses what effect this has on click-thrus?
breakall··on Show HN: TheReelBox, find tonight's movie
The UI is very cool! The Google Maps window loads very quickly when hovering over various show times. I immediately understood how this app could be useful. I also like the big high-res trailers.

Using Firefox 10 on my Windows 7 desktop machine, I clicked allow on the location sharing prompt, but the location it pulled was way off from my actual location. I assume it's going off my ISP location. I couldn't find any way to manually edit my location? I totally get the motivation to make it "just work" without a bunch of input from the user, but it seems you need a way to allow for fixing the location by the user.

Some of the locations it showed me movie times were quite far from me, which is OK -- the additional options were fine. But the next question that popped into my head when I saw the combination of a showtime and a location is "When do I have to leave?" A read-out of "You need to leave at X:XX to be on time for this movie" would be useful.

The placement of the "Get Tickets" link under each movie made it tricky to move the mouse there from the showtime link I had settled on without tripping over another showtime link -- kind of like that game where you move the ball through the maze! Clicking the showtime link just took me to a blank white page -- I assume this is not intentional.

breakall··on Node.js to pass Ruby on Rails in search popularity
Anyone else notice that when you add php, python, javascript, etc into the graph, all the terms trend down since 2004? Why is this?
breakall··on Why the NFL bans iPads (and other technology)
This story in the WSJ from back in December adds a lot of context to the issue of game time technology in the NFL. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405297020389340457710...

As others have commented, it's hard to believe that teams aren't already applying Moneyball-type analytics to the game.

breakall··on How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body
I'm also not an expert, but in the classes I've taken (gentle yoga and basic yoga), the instructors almost always guide us in poses that involve "spinal rotation."
breakall··on Linux noob, lesson learned
From another Linux noob--what went wrong? What is the correct way out of that situation?
breakall··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
I noticed it too and assumed it was for Steve since Tim Cook came out initially.
breakall··on RIM thought iPhone was impossible in 2007
I got that too. Did a search for user "Kentor" on the site and was able to get a list of his comments on shacknews, and there is a ghost of a comment from Dec 25 that says "you guys could have avoided this conversation..." and has the same comment id as the link from electronista. Looks like it was deleted, along with several other comments that appear to be on the same topic. http://www.shacknews.com/search.x?type=comments&terms=&#...
breakall··on Motorola F3: The anti-iPhone? (2007)
For a simple cell phone and texting device, I miss my old Samsung T509. It had a super slim candybar form factor that slid in and out of my pocket easily and didn't create a bulge in my pants. Looks like you can get a new one for about $20.

Of course, as well as it served for phone calls and texts, if you tried to do anything more with it (run java apps, add an mp3 ringtone), it disappointed.

breakall··on NetFlix: America's Most Underestimated Company
Are you thinking of Hulu? When does Netflix do pop-unders?
breakall··on A wiki for prepaid SIM cards around the world, suitable for iPhone & Android
I noticed that too -- in the Philippines, they have two big carriers with will both sell you unlimited data for one day for the equivalent of US$1.
breakall··on "We live in an amazing world and it's wasted on the crappiest generation..."
What a great video. Louis CK is one of the funniest comedians out there.
breakall··on Poll: Which cloud host do you use?
