breakall··on Set up your own email server in 5 steps
Generating more interest in the concept of running your own mail server is a great thing. The four part Ars Technica series on the topic [1] is the best and most comprehensive guide to setting up a mail server.

I think a more hands on approach is going to serve the amateur mail server admin better. I know I feel more confident about running my own mail server since I configured many of the components manually -- this puts me on much better footing to troubleshoot when something inevitably goes wrong.

The "five steps" in the link do not include spam or AV protection either, and trivializes the process of installing and configuring them.

breakall··on DynDNS ends free services
Cool, glad you mentioned this! I've used namecheap for a while and never noticed this feature! This will save me the trouble of having an outside service for DDNS.

For anyone else looking for this feature, log in to namecheap.com and click Manage Domains, click the domain you want to use DDNS with, then look for the Dynamic DNS link on the left menu under Miscellaneous.

breakall··on Brendan Eich, We’ve Failed You. I’m Sorry.
The blog posts, comments, and tweets aren't really what provided the direct pressure for him to resign.

Far more likely that corporate partners, donors, etc. called the remaining board members or anyone else of any influence and told them that the money would dry up if this problem didn't go away.

I find it interesting that the fact of his donation came up in 2012 when he was CTO of Mozilla (the organization he co-founded). This didn't become an issue in 2014 organically -- again I think it's far more likely that someone had it out for Eich, and saw their best opportunity to revive a two year old issue and get rid of him when he became CEO.

I was disappointed to find my new Lenovo Ideapad similarly loaded down with crap. Spent a few hours just installing nonsense.

The article says that "privacy is a fundamental right".

Are you saying that anonymity is also a fundamental right?

breakall··on Texas Appeals Court Rules Phone Search After Arrest Violates 4th Amendment [pdf]
I was tentative because the direction that two centuries of case law has taken the bill of rights often surprises me.

Thanks for the link. I googled for a bit to see if there had been a decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, but it doesn't appear so.

I watched a bit of the oral argument [1] from last November, and the state's argument was that since they were only asking for an order for the defendant to decrypt the data (not hand over the decryption key), the the defendant's 5th amendment rights would not be violated.

breakall··on Linksys E-series Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution Exploit
Is DD-WRT really a secure alternative to stock firmware at this point? It seems as though development has stalled out on it.

For example, I have an Linksys E2000. The "recommended" build on the DD-WRT wiki page is 14929, which is from approximately August 2010. The most recent compatible build I can find is 18946, which is dated 4/7/2012.

Running firmware that is 2 - 4 years old just seems very unsafe.

I had similar problems with Tomato on an E4200 -- it would reboot itself every few hours (noticeable when the wifi would disappear for a minute or two!). My guess is there was some kind of lockup, but a watchdog had enabled to reboot it when the lockup occurred. This can be caused by overheating, in which case you can try turning down the Tx power setting on one or both of the radios.

Agreed, this works great for notes, lists, etc.

I keep notes in text files in my Dropbox -- on desktop, I use vim or SciTE, and on iOS I use the PlainText app to read/edit them.

breakall··on Microsoft applies for trademark on 'Mod'
The trademark applications are for Mod, Windows Mod, Office Mod, and Microsoft Office Mod.

This makes "Mod" look like the new consumer brand to replace the less favored "Live".

Speaking of branding, whatever happened to Microsoft losing the Sky in SkyDrive to BSkyB?

In #5, Schneier says "For public-key cryptography, 2048-bit keys have same sort of property; longer is meaningless."

Back in September, he issued a new public key of 4096 bits[1].

Why isn't the advance button be in a fixed position? Why make the advance button's position dependent on some other dynamic element, like the text length in this case? This makes going through the slideshow very tedious.

Fascinating content, however.

breakall··on DigitalOcean Sucks. Use DigitalOcean
I don't know about the GP, but I used the "How To Install iRedMail On Ubuntu 12.04 x64"[1] guide on Digital Ocean's community site and was pretty successful in setting up my mail server, complete with postfix, dovecot, spamassasin, greylisting, ssl/tls, webmail, etc.

I am also using the iOS Mail app. I tested using an outlook.com account -- no leak.

Another annoyed iPhone reader here.

Normally the Safari "Reader" button would light up in the URL bar and I'd use that to read the article without distraction, but it didn't for some reason (content not properly marked up in the HTML?).

breakall··on Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos meet "Ginger" (2003)
Jobs' harsh criticism reminded me instantly of the 2003 email from Bill Gates trashing Windows Movie Maker, the Microsoft.com website, etc. [1]

It also reminded me of presentations I've given that have "gotten out of hand". I've found it's nearly impossible to direct a meeting like that--smart, intense people will not be led along the carefully crafted golden path you lay out for their time.

In Tim Adams' shoes, you may find yourself frustrated answering interruptive questions that are answered clearly in your deck, spec document, etc. After much experience with this, I've found that if you can give a sensible answer to the question, and after the answer is accepted, just say "... and that's in the document on page X", people are generally pleased with that. If they point out a loophole, gap, etc. in your design, "we will call that out" or "we'll add that immediately" can get you moving along again.

The "did you read the entire deck" question was funny. (Could that possibly work?? :-P)

breakall··on GNOME 3.8 Released
Yes, and I know Unity got this from OSX. I should have said, are there other Linux-based shells, etc. that have this feature.
breakall··on GNOME 3.8 Released
You may or may not consider it a "major next-gen UI", but I'd throw Ubuntu's Unity in that list as well.

While I'm on the topic, I love the way Unity consolidates system bar, app title bar, and app menu bar. This single screen real estate saving technique is what keeps me using Unity. Every time I switch into Gnome, *box, etc., open Firefox, and see 3 bars all taking up screen real estate, I go back to Unity.

Are there any other shells/window managers/whatever that do this same bar consolidation???

breakall··on Shark Tank Statistics
> The smart ones take the huge publicity jump from appearing on the show, turn down any deal offered, and seek money from the inevitable inbound investor generated post-show airing.

Turn down the deal is exactly what Scott Jordan of SCOTTEVEST did... I'd be curious if he got action on the deal he was trying to make after the show aired. Scott described his experience with Shark Tank extensively on the company's website [1]. The "raw unedited video" of Scott watching the episode he appeared on for the first time is interesting (he gets interrupted with news that the SCOTTEVEST site is not withstanding the traffic surge during the episode's airing!).

Be famous, rich, powerful, or all of the above?

Snark aside, I've occasionally exchanged brief emails with folks at newspapers -- an op/ed writer who wrote a particular column I liked, for example. With enough persistence, I think I could get through. If I really ran into a brick wall at the Post or the Times, I'd settle for the editor of a mid-size city paper.
