bradbeattie··on On Password Managers
I recall seeing some domain-hashing solution on hackernews some months back, and built https://gist.githubusercontent.com/bradbeattie/c688e567e8564... in response. It's been working pretty well for me.

bradbeattie··on Most Vegetarians and Vegans Eventually Return to Meat
I totally hear you on that, though I'd add that the overly zealous are invariably new to it. In-group policing among vegans tends to moderate that vitriol within a few months.

I wonder (now that I'm thinking back on instances of "the new and the loud" I've known in my decades) whether some adopt veganism /specifically/ to have an issue to be loud about. When that behaviour is rejected from both the in and out groups, they move on to some other issue. Certainly lines up with some I've seen... I dunno, just spit-balling here.

bradbeattie··on Most Vegetarians and Vegans Eventually Return to Meat
Long time vegan here. While I think that saying has some truth to it, there are also those that sympathize with the ethics, try it out for a short while, but find the pressure of social backlash too costly. The biggest problem isn't nutrition; It's ingroup/outgroup policing (predominantly by the vast majority of non-vegans).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQUo53o6QXg#t=0m30s (strawman opening skipiped) is clearly an exaggeration, but highlights the uncomfortable reality of being "the different one" at the dinner table.

bradbeattie··on Explain Shell
I fed it the most recent command posted on commandlinefu.com:

    grep -i s2enc /etc/vcac/server.xml | sed -e 's/.* password=\"\([^\"]*\)\".*/\1/' | xargs -n 1 vcac-config prop-util -d --p 2>/dev/null; echo
Given the height of the result, scrolling up and down became a real pain. Maybe collapsable sections or position:fixed for the command or something like that?
bradbeattie··on Ringling Bros. circus to close after 146 years
In fairness, the chances of most North Americans getting it right are pretty low when you consider the obesity epidemic, lack of physical activity, and all their orbiting ailments.

To your point though, difficult in what respect? I've been doing this since I was 9 and haven't had any issues. The most common concerns I hear are nutritional (protein, iron, calcium, B12) and convenience (restaurants, grocery stores, birthday cakes, etc). But I'm curious as to what your specific concerns are.

"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes." -- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19562864

A similar approach should work for audio too.

> And really you should separate the mechanism for expressing voter preference from the mechanism for picking a winner.

Thank you for highlighting that. Too often the ballot and the aggregation method are conflated.

On https://modernballots.com/elections/zombies/vote/ I implemented 5-star ratings as the default. Everyone's familiar with this kind of rating and it allows indifference between two options.

Barring edge cases, Condorcet methods can be described like single-elimination tournaments which pretty much everyone is familiar with.

Yes, graph theory comes into play for tie breaking (assuming we can agree that cyclic Condorcet paradoxes are ties of sorts), but the core of the idea is already understood by an overwhelming majority in concept if not by name.

bradbeattie··on Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative Approved
Alternatively, why not just go full Condorcet? The Schulze Method has a significant backing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method#Users

If you really want simplicity though, I suppose you could use IRV as your tie breaker amongst the Schwartz set.

bradbeattie··on Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative Approved
The difficulty here is parsing out

* people's sincere preferences

* people's reported preferences in surveys

* people's strategic voting in a hypothetical scenario

* and people's strategic voting in the real world.

I'd argue that an ideal system allows those four to collapse into one, but I'm not holding my breath.

In honesty though, I don't know. I'd assume this type of failure would occur whenever the largest demographic's second choice isn't the first choice of the second largest demographic (read: quite often), but that's armchair guessing.

bradbeattie··on Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative Approved
An example of IRV's misbehaviour:

* 8 people vote: A, C, B

* 5 people vote: B, C, A

* 4 people vote: C, B, A

IRV eliminates C and elects B, but the majority of voters prefer C over B (12 to 5). The order of elimination dropped 8 ballots' information that they prefer C over B. To put that generally, IRV ignores the secondary preferences of large demographics.

Perhaps another example of why I think single winner voting systems should take all preferences into account (as Condorcet methods do):

* 100 people vote CentristX

* 101 people vote PolarizedCandidateA > CentristX

* 101 people vote PolarizedCandidateB > CentristX

* 101 people vote PolarizedCandidateC > CentristX

* 101 people vote PolarizedCandidateD > CentristX

The example is a bit contrived, but it highlights how disregarding secondary preferences (IRV's main feature) isn't a good idea. 403 people prefer CentristX over every other polarized candidate, yet CentristX is dropped in IRV's first round.

Disclaimer: I run modernballots, a voting website that makes use of the Schulze-family of voting systems: https://modernballots.com/elections/zombies/vote/

I initially recognized that as 504/92 based on the slant. Character recognition can be surprisingly context sensitive.

bradbeattie··on Bee Bread
Are there any negative effects to harvesting this bee bread?

> But the bees do not consume their pollen fresh. Instead, they take it into the hive and pack the granules into empty comb cells, mixing them with nectar and digestive fluids and sealing the cell with a drop of honey. Once processed in this way, the pollen remains stable indefinitely. Beekeepers call this form of pollen ‘perga’ or ‘bee bread’.

This implies it's their food.

Given the recent concerns with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_collapse_disorder, is this unusual delicacy worth the potential environmental damages? (I don't mean that rhetorically; It's an actual question.)

* Edge (no adblocker) * Opera (default adblocker) * Opera (adblocker disabled) * Chrome (no adblocker) * Chrome (uBlock Origin)

Otherwise you're just lying through omission to make your product seem better.

I'm in the same camp as you. Vegetarian since 1989, vegan since 1999. I can certainly say that the quality of fake meats has drastically improved in the past 10 years (see https://gardein.com/, http://fieldroast.com/, and http://beyondmeat.com/ as examples), but the stigma surrounding them persists.

Short anecdote: There's a donut shop in my town that sold vegan and regular donuts in adjacent but separate displays. In some instances, the donuts on the regular side were also vegan, identical in every way save for the label. They found that they sold far better without the word "vegan" attached to them, and eventually stopped labelling them altogether, providing a side-menu to help vegans identify which are which.

Point being, perception is surprisingly important when it comes to taste.

> And in america, at least, where meat-eating is tied to masculinity and bacon is worshipped, that's a tough stigma to shake.

I'd argue that it really doesn't matter how similar to meat these products get, if they're still seen as "fake". Even if delicious, people tend to gravitate towards "real". But hey, maybe they've found a market that wants this that I'm just not seeing.
