bouke··on USB-C Confirmed for the iPhone 15
Lightning is standardised across my friends and family, so being the weird one out with usb-c doesn’t improve my user experience.
bouke··on WebKit – Touch Bar Web API
The Touch Bar is also on the way out, so there doesn’t seem much value in adding this API anymore now.
bouke··on Apple Set to Launch iPhone 15 Series Come September 13th
Yes, this one might have a charging port that will require me to retrofit my home/car/office/parents home with special charging cables just so I can charge my potential phone in the same locations as my current one.
bouke··on AirPrint with Cups
I’ve been wanting to set this up for a long time for my Dell Color Laser 1320n, however I can’t seem to get printing working from RPi ARM Linux as the drivers only support x86.
bouke··on Could this GPS tarmac transmitter be a solution for noisy flight path over SFO?
When all the ads have finished loading, the viewport moves right, cutting off the left part of the text. As horizontal scroll is disabled, the text is unreadable on mobile Safari.
bouke··on Apple’s first M3 Macs could arrive in October
Windows 11 ARM can be run on M1 through parallels. Windows 11 ARM can run x64/x86 (either?) software. So there’s a path. Performance of the translation layer is not great though.
bouke··on Tesla Fleet Telemetry
Every time Tesla refers to the cars they sold to customers as their ‘fleet’, I get the feeling they don’t really recognise they are no longer the owner of those vehicles.

Fleet as defined in Oxford Dictionary: “A number of vehicles or aircraft working together, or under the same ownership.”

(edit: use actual Oxford definition)

bouke··on Stack Overflow Is Down
Or are they at serious risk of not being able to bring it back online again? All the solutions are offline now as well…
bouke··on I wrote my own smart home software
Mind you, HomeKit really is offline-first. The home hub does operate as the internet bridge, but on your local network you don’t need internet to operate your home.
bouke··on I wrote my own smart home software
HomeKit can pair only once, to pair it another time it needs to be unpaired first; a design choice unrelated to HA. But you can “share” your home in the Home app. That will add additional “controllers” to those devices (HA being the device here).
bouke··on Microsoft Teams on Windows 11 gets Discord-like communities and an AI art tool
Because why work bugs if you can work on all this other cool stuff that looks good on your resume?
bouke··on DNSSEC failures are how you get people to disable DNSSEC
I had exactly the same issue happening to me! I’ve since added a Real Time Clock (RTC), so the Pi shouldn’t forget about the current time anymore. That is until the battery runs out of course, for which there is no monitoring in place. So yeah maybe I should disable DNSSEC as well. At least we need to get better at building fault tolerant systems. Maybe Pi-Hole needs to be aware of and handle this scenario better: a special “we’re booting up and we don’t have the current time so don’t do DNSSEC yet”.
bouke··on Modern work requires attention – constant alerts steal it
Except for Teams not respecting this setting and forcefully projects its own ugly notifications nonetheless.
bouke··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
I have a Dell 1320CN Color Laser, which has been great for some 15 years. The sad part is that it needs drivers on macOS/Linux which only work on Intel CPUs. So I have to cuddle an ancient iMac so to keep the ability to print.
bouke··on The single Postgres setting that almost took down our database
Being able to trace postgres queries is nice. Is there a way to do that while not breaking the plan caching?
bouke··on EU approves controversial Dutch farm buy-out plan to meet climate goals
Overall industry is just single digits percentage of the total nitrogen problem: https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/dossier/dossier-stikstof/stikstofde.... But yeah Schengen apparently also applies to nitrogen.

Agriculture 44.6% Foreign 31.7% Traffic 11.9% Industry & buildings 8.7% Ammonia from sea 3.0%

Also note that this is separate from greenhouse emissions, the nitrogen reduction is needed to allow our nature to recover from decennia of neglect. There was a recent study showing that over 50% of our nature is in bad/poor condition, amongst the worst across the EU.

In 2019 an important ruling was made against the governmental policy to deal with nitrogen. This policy is what allowed highway speeds to increase from 120 kmh to 130 kmh, residential buildings to be build and overall industry to continue. Since 2019 several additional rulings have been made that put everything on hold. For every activity that impacts nature in a negative way, the nitrogen deposits need to be offset.

bouke··on Example of why you should not use FaceID to unlock your phone
If you look at the settings, you’ll find that they are configurable.
bouke··on Windows 11’s taskbar is finally getting labels and never combine app icons
No NT4 is of the same lineage as 2000. I was referring to the other lineage of Windows with ME being the last one. The unification that XP provided was good for stability, but the eventual result is this whole Windows 11 ordeal.
bouke··on Windows 11’s taskbar is finally getting labels and never combine app icons
Like the good old times with Windows ME and 2000!
bouke··on 'Tap-to-pay' charged credit cards through bags, pockets at restaurants, stores
But then again those payments are not tap-to-pay as they require some form of authentication (e.g. FaceID).
bouke··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
I once had a parasitic drain on my BMW 3-series (e46). The dealership diagnosed the problem appropriately. It turned out to be the GROM Audio module I installed to replace the CD changer. It would drain the battery in about a week. So back to burning CDs and the issue was resolved.
bouke··on Lobbyists begin chipping away at Biden’s $80B IRS overhaul
Same here in The Netherlands.
bouke··on Apple Music Classical
The iPhone Music app can play music from Apple Music, amongst others. It is not synonymous for Apple Music. You can still have your local library without subscribing to Apple Music.
bouke··on Apple Music Classical
Probably because they're branding it as "Apple Music", not "Music (by) Apple".
bouke··on Microsoft Teams is blocking Firefox Nightly
Doesn’t work in Safari on default settings either, it complains about disabling tracking prevention. No thanks. Also, Safari’s tracking prevention is almost 6 years old by now, support it already. So more like Chromium Wide Web.
bouke··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
I have the same issue. I’ve had a support call with an engineer about this and they have no idea how to fix this. If you sort the user list ascending it lists the one account and if you sort descending it lists the other. So changing the sorting should at least show _some_ license.
bouke··on Down the Cloudflare / Stripe / OWASP Rabbit Hole
Indeed, in the end Troy disabled a certain rule for incoming requests from Stripe but not all. Just before publishing the article he discovered more (webhook) requests being blocked by a different rule. This seems like a continuous source of issues where valid (webhook) requests are being (arbitrarily) blocked. Why wouldn't you just disable all rules for requests coming from Stripe?
bouke··on How likely is losing a Google account?
Right!? Not being allowed to take pictures of your own kids as you might anger your land lord as they'll evict you without warning and burn all your stuff.
bouke··on 30k lines of SwiftUI in production later, we love it, but
First of all, congratulations on publishing your app! I’ve never come close to that, although having created a few PoC’s.

On my 11 Pro the animations are sluggish, buttons presses are missed when switching from plan to browse and the device gets pretty warm indicating heavy cpu usage. I’ve read that you’ve already put a lot of time in investigating performance issues, so is then expected with a more complex UI, is this the best one can do with SwiftUI, or do you need to be an even more experienced expert in SwiftUI to further improve things?

bouke··on Setting the clock ahead to see what breaks
This! People mistake the offset for the timezone, which is incorrect. The offset isn't very useful other than a guestimate of the originating timezone.
