Looks like it was submitted by an Apple intern and hasn't been touched since 2017. I can't say I've heard too many people crying out for a Web API for the touch bar but maybe I'm not listening to the right people.

Yeah, this post doesn't have merit — and thanks for linking, was interesting reading some of the comments.

As an aside, I bet many of HN don't see much value in Touch Bar as it likely has a higher propensity of touch typers than visual/hunt-and-peck typers, for whom Touch Bar really did shine. Not a feedback loop worth fulfilling, however.

The Touch Bar is also on the way out, so there doesn’t seem much value in adding this API anymore now.

Didn't the Touch Bar go away with Johnny Ive?

It makes me so happy that almost none of the current laptops have it. We're so close...

I'd be fine with the bar in addition to a function row. There are some really nice interactions possible. But absolutely not as a replacement, much less a non-optional one for many models.

I am inclined to agree. I do somewhat like it on my 13” MBP but do miss physical function keys. If they just let you do fn+num for the F keys it would be a big improvement…

I never use the Touch Bar and I find it distracting because most of the time my laptop is docked to the side of my real keyboard and monitor and the Touch Bar is animating in my peripheral vision.

You can set the touchbar to display the regular keyboards function keys which are static and don’t animate.

I had forgotten that was possible. Thanks.

Folowing Jony's departure, Apple did introduce a new mbp design that removed the Touch Bar-- but has also sold an updated version of the 13" model, which still includes it, for some time

Mine still has the touch bar but the Escape key is a real key. It's bearable but overall still a terrible idea.

the 13" macbook pro w/ touchbar is basically a drop in replacement for the previous generation. I'm under the impression it's meant for enterprises/education where any visible difference results in a 'who moved my cheese' screaming session from users/c-level folks.
