boringg··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
I was responding to the OPs comment that was needlessly hyperbolic. I don't think you are posting with good intentions or limited thought got put into it.

I doesn't matter where the operational band is - if at about 280 M barrels - they have a reasonable amount of runway before they start hitting hard technical barriers per OP comment especially with oil flowing into the country from other sources.

boringg··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
Well if you are sitting at 40-50% and you actually still get oil from a lot of different countries it isn't a dire situation at all. Its not like all of a sudden we aren't getting oil from a variety of other countries. Its more like a slow drain on reserves while other sources start producing. I would also wager that its just price suppression before midterms.

OP's comment was that we are at 0 and nothing left. I pointed out that they were being hyperbolic or that they don't understand the strategic reserve (or both).

boringg··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
You mean at 50% drawdown? Easy on the hyperbole.
boringg··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Very cool.

I'm curious why is there a ring around earth - is that kind of a default position that a bunch of them automatically get given if there isn't more specificity in the data?

boringg··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
No offense taken - I always find most people try and take an opposing view for debate sakes. I was merely hoping you didn't think that was the case. Glad to see we agree.

You realize you mostly just agreed with everything I said but added more language?

I would wager Iran is barely hanging on. The question is which side can hang on longer. Its like their both dangling off a cliff with their fingers on the edge - one due to politics, the other because they weren’t as strong as they projected from the start. I suspect Iran might hang on to after midterms.

Worth noting mid east is all looking for other routes now 3-5 years from now Iran will be in a weaker economic situation on reduced flow. Hopefully Theocracy has been ended.

boringg··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
harm to major organs >> at high doses not at low doses but agree there is an increased risk to liver on alcohol.

Gummies put a cognitive burden. If you are smoking that puts a fair burden on the cardiovascular system. High dose THC run a risk of psychosis.

Look im not pro either I'm however not in this lala land of believing there isn't any negative effects of THC especially over time.

boringg··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I said in moderation please read my comments.
boringg··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
So basically theft and fixing overloaded infra. So this is policy based solutions for the most part.

Amazing that places have 50% power loss.

boringg··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Equivalent risk. No way is THC healthier than alcohol - both in moderation not at excess.

Then its a personal preference thing.

I mean it also takes a long to build an orchard and get the apples to fruit. So older orchards are happily still producing old varietals instead of ripping and replacing the trees. Not everything old must be replaced with new - so wasteful.

boringg··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
That is too bad - how do you get the reins of a company that size with something antithesis to their product and identity? I hope he doesn't start trying to monetize privacy.

Wait what are the signs that the new Apple CEO commitment is headed for the heap? Seriously asking
boringg··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Is this a collective push right now for LVT ? I got an e-mail this morning from Astral Codex Ten on the same topic - seems like a campaign is a foot.

Twice in one day for a topic as not specific as this seems intentional.

boringg··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Smart fridges are a waste. Why would you need AI on your fridge - maybe to brick them so people need to buy more fridges?

I was at the store and one fridge had built in cameras so you could get pictures of your fridge all the time. :S

boringg··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
Sounds like they didn't really have good tutors at the company.
boringg··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
This statement is kind of wild.

If your trying to argue that 417 operating reactors and 377 GW of operating nuclear capacity at end-2024, producing roughly 2,600–2,700 TWh/year, about 9% of global electricity isn't profitable at all and that somehow all that money is just lit on fire not generating profit/value? Bold claim -- the ecosystem is about $300-500 B/year globally per isn't profitable?

How can the scientific progress of developing nuclear power + medical isotopes and the entire value chain associated with that development, incredibly long lived assets, nuclear fuel development not have been profitable? The fact that you have baseload generation that supports the entire grid?

What part of the equation are you talking about - at what part of the project life cycle? Are you trying to say they were built and weren't profitable the minute the switch turned on?

boringg··on Meta VR Glasses
Still same problem all VR has -- no killer use case. Outside of the problem that it is Meta doing this, the product in and of itself isn't that great. Ask all Quest users if they still use it all the time.... most of the oculus's are just collecting dust.

Some future date we will get there, but this isn't it.

boringg··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
I mean the industrial policy of America is a jobs program. I think the governments en masse are trying to correct their assumptions from the 90s. Update their priors if you would.
boringg··on The darker side of being a doctor
"nearly all said if given a Time Machine they wouldn’t do it all over again. That was a real wake up call."

And do they have experience working any other job as a comparables? The question you ask is the equivalent of saying do you think there are better jobs out there? Being a doctor is about the lowest risk job you can get if you are smart and capable. You get high status in society, excellent paycheck and on net are helping people.

boringg··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
At 1-2% savings of water thats roughly $20M–$40M/year on 2M AF of throughput using the 2024 SWP as base reference for volumes + 1000$/AF.

Though I think saving water in drought years has a massive value that isn't properly measured in this calculation. Likewise in boom years saving water almost doesn't matter.

See what the proposals come in as. See if the politicians turn it into a jobs project for the interior...

boringg··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
So thats a pilot project - and the benefits aren't supposed to be your 1$/W its comparing the collective of all the goals for the project. So include the water savings and the cleaning costs - then comparing the two of them.

Its also not comparing against utility projects because it isn't utility scale.

boringg··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
One can dream but your solution is wildly unrealistic.

Its actually not just junkies, you get organized criminals who are stripping solar assets of $ value items.

boringg··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
They are both quotes that people say things like "they say" to imply someone of import said it to give it credence and truth to it but were in fact from fictional sources.

Exact same pattern - take it as an ad hominem all you want.

boringg··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
“It is said that at the heart of every great fortune there is a great crime“. That quote is from a fiction author - you’re essentially quoting Spiderman “with great power comes great responsibility”.
