Neck-deep in computers since my first Apple II+, I've done just about everything in this field.

Currently I'm having fun setting up and running various kinds of servers, and developing web sites both professionally and for kicks.

I run a modded-but-no-downloads-required co-operative Battlefield 1942 server called Tanks 'n Planes Unlimited, which you can find via https://jdrgaming.com.

I also have a computing blog: https://boot13.com.

My consulting business: https://jrc-core.com.

I use https://speedof.me/ and https://testmy.net/. They match my QoS limits when QoS is enabled in my router, and match what I'm paying for when QoS is disabled.

boot13··on WordPress 5.0 introduces a flexible block-based content editor
As long as the traditional editor remains an option I won't mind. If they force it on us, that could be a problem. I try every new version of Gutenberg for posting on one of my sites, and so far I've had to switch back to the traditional editor every time. From the Wordpress 5.0 welcome page: "Support for the Classic Editor plugin will remain in WordPress through 2021... Note to users of assistive technology: if you experience usability issues with the block editor, we recommend you continue to use the Classic Editor."

YouTube is the world's greatest repository of culture. And shitty comments. But mostly the culture thing. And Facebook is a bulletin board. No competition.
boot13··on Robocalls Flooding Your Cellphone? Here’s How to Stop Them
I was just poking around in the settings for my new Android phone and found Settings > Applications > Phone > Call blocking > Block list > Block anonymous calls. Would that be helpful at all? I haven't tested it myself.

uMatrix rocks. It can take a few minutes of fiddling to get a complex site working, but it's totally worthwhile.
boot13··on Critical security updates for Git, Subversion and Mercurial
No stats needed. Just go through the bug list for any software. How many of the bugs were introduced by the people who maintain stable packages?
boot13··on Critical security updates for Git, Subversion and Mercurial
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I see it differently. Where do new bugs and vulnerabilities come from? When the main developers add features or make changes to existing features that go beyond fixing bugs.

From the point of view of many server administrators, using the latest versions of everything is inherently risky. What they want to use is a stable, solid version that has all the latest security fixes.

It's unlikely that these opposing viewpoints will ever be reconciled.

Interesting, but not really all that useful for people who don't have loads of money. The rest of us have to make do with consumer grade crap, or do the extra work of finding good hardware and installing useful firmware into it. I'm running an Asus RT-N66U with Advanced Tomato and it works beautifully. Of course, I don't live in a mansion.

Wow. So much wrong with that. I was already planning to switch from Comodo to LE for one client, but now I'm going make sure none of my other clients are using Comodo certs. Sorry, Comodo, but you're just hastening your demise with this kind of behaviour.

Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"

Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree.
