boomer_joe··on Making Tailscale Faster
Yes. Just fucking stop doing userspace wireguard on linux https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale/issues/426 - issue has been open for 6 years (and is locked now, lol), btw.

And if any tailscale employees are reading this - https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale/issues/15724 please fix this too. Regular users not using some sort of enterprise saas DNS (whatever their thing is?) deserve DNS privacy too.

boomer_joe··on Improved Gemini 2.5 Flash and Flash-Lite
Gemini 2.5 Pro feels heavily lobotomized for me lately, failing at very simple tasks with a frequency far above what I was used to seeing back when it first released. The personality seems to be getting worse too - I'm getting very tired of those dumbed analogies it loves to spew.

Would like to know whether Flash exhibits these issues as well.

boomer_joe··on Polars Cloud and Distributed Polars now available
Thanks! Will it be paid or open source?
boomer_joe··on Polars Cloud and Distributed Polars now available
I don't understand. Can I use distributed Polars with my own machines or do I have to buy cloud compute to run distributed queries (I don't want that). If not, is this planned?
boomer_joe··on A conceptual overview of asyncio
I fail to see why. You can have an event loop per thread, and a hypothetical requirement of wanting to make sure all compute in each thread is spent inside of its event loop (assuming OS level parallelism). Eg a latency-sensitive server in thread A and a logger in thread B (dont even need the event loop there for this example)
boomer_joe··on Pyrefly vs. Ty: Comparing Python's two new Rust-based type checkers
What's the plan for ruff? Will it be part of ty one day?
boomer_joe··on I Built My Own Audio Player
Isn't VLC an option for playing local files and available in the App store? You could sync the folder with iCloud.
boomer_joe··on Turner, Bird, Eratosthenes: An eternal burning thread
You're interacting with an LLM.
boomer_joe··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
No, you're just moving the goalpost (and you're pretty bad at it too)
boomer_joe··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
And what's the use if you don't know they're not compiling against a backdoored version under the hood?
boomer_joe··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
>as I run macOS

How is the FDE story on macOS? Isn't it closed source - how can you tolerate that as a cryptographer? (Not saying Linux is perfect, cryptsetup doesn't have a secure AEAD mode)

boomer_joe··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
We need a licence that forbids use in ML and the people willing to sue github for it ASAP.
boomer_joe··on Lisp in an “impossible” language, the most complex Malbolge program to date
Given the amount of time people spent trying to implement something interesting in Malbolge (unshackled), I would also be very interested in a detailed explanation, perhaps a blog post, of how you achieved this.

Otherwise I am inclined to believe that this must be the result of exploiting a loophole, perhaps the interpreter not implementing the malbolge specification or something.

boomer_joe··on Show HN: Sioyek – PDF viewer for reading research papers and technical documents
Drawn with a graphics tablet, yeah.

I find the drawing UX of Okular very lacking - if this application could have a simple, clean annotations interface that produces clean lines with a tablet, this would be huge for me.

boomer_joe··on The collapse of the IRON stable coin
>Non-collateralized stablecoins

read: "ponzi scheme". This is pretty funny.

boomer_joe··on The German government decided on a new, extremely strict copyright reform
Same story as with Article 17 back then. Remember how the deputies in the EU parliament claimed they "accidentally pressed the wrong button"?

The part about pushing this through under the radar is particularly frustrating. At least we are getting daily news about coronavirus and antisemitism.

boomer_joe··on What is your favorite C programming trick? (2009)
What is the advantage of your assume macro over regular C11 static_assert / assert? Apologies if it is immediately obvious.

And in case anyone else is wondering, the advantage of that m_max macro is that it evaluates each of its arguments only once.

boomer_joe··on Why some people suffer from a stutter
>People who stutter often appear to have slightly weaker connections between the brain areas responsible for hearing and for the movements that generate speech

Interesting. One would expect that from this it would follow that stutterers are bad singers.

boomer_joe··on Modern C
I wish the WG14 would publish the TeX sources for the latest working draft. None of the pdf-to-html generators work well, and as a result the most up to date version you can conveniently view in your browser is C99.
boomer_joe··on Telegram: Video Calls and Seven Years
Now if only they had a bot API which wasn't so restrictive...
boomer_joe··on A Database of Historical Cookbooks
Useless is an understatement.
boomer_joe··on How I got my Japanese permanent residency
No such thing - To the kind of people you just replied to, a cultural identity and homogenous, well educated society means nothing.
boomer_joe··on How I got my Japanese permanent residency
>in Germany and Switzerland they are desperate for good engineers

This is absolutely not true. I don't know why anyone would lie so blatantly.

Engineering and CS graduates are present in abundance, and the job market is brutal.

boomer_joe··on Holographic optics for thin and lightweight virtual reality

boomer_joe··on Minlzma – Minimal LZMA Project
I've never seen this article before, but it does not read like a polemic. Do you know of a rebuttal of the points mentioned?
boomer_joe··on Safe-Linking – Eliminating a 20 year-old malloc() exploit primitive
The musl mailing list is very active, and communication with the maintainers is generally effortless. It would be interesting to see how this plays out. They are also in the process of rewriting their malloc implementation.

Thank you for your work!

boomer_joe··on How does coronavirus kill? Clinicians trace a ferocious rampage through the body
I am also a healthy man in my mid thirties, and like you, got infected and quickly recovered. That a was a month ago.

It would be good to know if the organ damage detailed in the article also affects those that recover without significant symptoms.

I fear it does, because I have lost and not regained my sense of smell.

boomer_joe··on Trolls break into meetings on Zoom
Yikes. Looks like a pretty misogynistic place.
