bondant··on How I got the French Tech Visa to start my company in France
> Please write a blog post with a more complete list of podcasts that you listen to and sites that you read!

>It turns out it is surprisingly difficult to find pointers to sites and podcasts if you speak French, but do not live in France. The internet is really good at keeping us in our bubbles, making a lot of assumptions on geolocated IPs.

If you have a good level in french, I would advise you to listen to France Culture. I think the programmes are quite good, I personally really liked the audio series, for instance "L'incroyable expédition de Corentin Tréguier au Congo". Another interesting programme of this summer is the ongoing interviews with "modern mercenaries/privateer" [3]

>Hetzner also charges to do things like replace failed drives

Are you sure? If I look at the AX dedicated server page, I can read that the basic support is free:

"Basic support includes the free replacement of defective hardware and the renewed loading of the basic system (in so far as a disk image system can be loaded)."

From what I've seen, PGI's offloading (with OpenACC) still delivers better performance than GCC, although GCC is improving. Also PGI usually give better error messages or comments about what it's doing when offloading. But yes offloading with PGI is for Nvidia cards only, and GCC contributors are working on adding support for offloading to AMD GPUs.

>Also, one has to wonder why they haven't tried a 30" display yet. I'd back that in a heartbeat.

Maybe they consider the 31" display to be too much expensive. The display alone is worth $1500, when bought directly from e-ink: https://shopkits.eink.com/product/31-2%cb%9d-monochrome-epap...

Same here, I opened firefox 20 minutes ago and discovered this thread, but all my addons seems to work fine. (FF 66, from debian repo, I'm in EU)
bondant··on Topics in Advanced Data Structures [pdf]
Does anyone know books which explore in depth recent development in advanced data structure (or just not well known advanced data structure) ?
bondant··on Ask HN: Online banks where I can open account worldwide?
I got a borderless account about 4 months ago and I am happy with it. I use it to receive my salary in pounds, and I use the bank card to pay in pounds and euro in UK and France. I choose to use this account instead because they let me open the account before I moved to UK and they sent me the bank card in France. Still, I run into few minor problems: it's impossible to change the limitations of the card with the web-based interface, you need to use the android/ios app (which I don't have). Also, I have never been able to pay in Asda and Tesco by inserting the card (but contactless works). I never had any problems with other shop or hotel.

Does someone has already tried to code on an AlphaSmart? I suppose it's a little like using ed.

I would be happy to have a distraction-free device to focus on my code. But I am not sure the screen is large enough to really work on it.

bondant··on The Legend of Nintendo
It seems you have mostly played zelda games from the n64. I have not tried BotW yet, but from what I have seen, it seems to be close from the the first zelda. A big world with no story, no pressure to complete the game quickly, no explicit path to follow. Just a world to explore.

I have played the first zelda, and OoT, MM, and WW. In all of them, what I have really liked was the pleasure to wander into the world, (mounting epona on hyrule field, get lost in the see while discovering new island). In the contrary I have only played the first few hours of skyward sword, because every two minutes a NPC was telling me what I should do and what I should not, and where I should go . Awful! So I am very happy Nintendo choose to go for less story and more discoveries. Could you post a link to your review, I would be interested to read your position with more details.

In France, you can report vulnerabilities to the ANSSI (National Cybersecurity Agency of France). The agency stays somewhat neutral between justice and the company with vulnerabilities since ANSSI must protect confidentiality of their informer. Informations can be sent by email or postal service.

bondant··on Helping Gimp
ZeMarmot is an animation movie made with free software, like Gimp. The artist Jehan Pagès is the second contributor[1] to Gimp. Helping him to fund his movie is helping fund Gimp.

Since the funding is not very successful at the moment, Jehan may be forced to withdraw from Gimp from the next year in order to earn a living. So Gimp may loose one of his biggest contributor.
