bobviolier··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
Security updates, I am afraid. At least that's what the launch video said.
bobviolier··on Heroku's Managed DB's have been down for 2+ hours
No, just 5 minutes https://uptime.is/99.999
bobviolier··on Mac OS update failed for the first time in 19 years
I thought it was always better to disconnect your external screen (from a Macbook) during an update.
bobviolier··on EU antitrust: Apple shouldn't use privacy and security to stave off competition
I mean, you don't _have_ to install another marketplace for apps.
bobviolier··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
Note that unfortunately they actually have a set of cards that are better suited for crypto.. they just don't want you to use these.
bobviolier··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
The digiconomist actually compared watching Youtube with a single bitcoin transaction (don't know the specifics and how accurate), but they said 1 btc transaction is the same as 51.000 hours of watching YouTube:

bobviolier··on Google Maps' Moat Is Evaporating
Can't speak about Eastern Europe, but here in the Netherlands the public transport with Google Maps is really good. Including live-timing as to when your tram will arrive.
bobviolier··on Google Maps' Moat Is Evaporating
These street maps are becoming insanely precise, probably helped by the competition. I see that Google Maps is now testing "detailed street maps" in some cities: https://www.justinobeirne.com/google-testing-detailed-street...

Just a thought: maybe they are scanning cities for their self-driving cars and are also using this data for Maps?

bobviolier··on Preliminary Incident Statement
The Google Cloud was almost unaffected, during the outage you could not log into the cloud console or use tools like gcloud - but the services itself (vms, gke, pubsub, etc) kept working throughout the outage.
bobviolier··on Alphabet announces Q3 2020 earnings
30 million paid subscriptions it seems on youtube. Source: https://twitter.com/mhbergen/status/1321918113370136576?s=19
bobviolier··on Apple Security Research Device Program
Looks like they won't https://twitter.com/benhawkes/status/1286021329246801921?s=1...
bobviolier··on Tempering Expectations for GPT-3 and OpenAI’s API
I mean, Sam Altman is just one of the founders and the CEO of OpenAI - so yeah, what does he know.
bobviolier··on Google Pixel Buds
I actually got to hand that one to them in a positive way. I had a Pixel XL and now a Pixel 2XL, and the support is amazing for me. I've received two times a new Pixel 2XL over time (okay, not good that it broke) and that support was really good. I also have the Pixel Buds 1st gen, and there the support is also great.
bobviolier··on Google Pixel Buds
Yeah, I really don't get why they don't just release them everywhere. The same for all their products btw. In the Netherlands they still sell the old Google Wifi (1st gen), which is apparently their main product as it is the first thing you see when you go to the store site here.
bobviolier··on Google is not a search engine, but an ad engine
Pretty sure Apple didn't pay anything for having Google Maps in the app store. It was Google that wanted to be there. I think Apple did want navigation, POI information and user information to use in for example Siri (and linking to locations in other apps).
bobviolier··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
Yeah this ^

I guess Google did an MVP and everybody is expecting it to be a fully-fledged offering already. That might have been due to Google promoting it as such of course (and asking the price for it).

What I also see happening is that as soon as they have a free tier, people are gonna try to play a game for 5 minutes because they saw something on Youtube or somewhere else and then 1 in X will just buy the game on Stadia.

bobviolier··on The Google Squeeze
Only the non-ads on YouTube are already worth every penny. Especially the family plan.
bobviolier··on The July Galileo Outage: What happened and why
No question, but thanks for the research and article!
bobviolier··on New 'unremovable' xHelper malware has infected 45,000 Android devices
To be fair, if you stick to just using the Google Play Store, _this_ malware wouldn't hit you.

> According to Malwarebytes, the source of these infections is "web redirects" that send users to web pages hosting Android apps. These sites instruct users on how to side-load unofficial Android apps from outside the Play Store. Code hidden in these apps downloads the xHelper trojan.

bobviolier··on Latest Firefox Brings Privacy Protections Front and Center
I think one of the things that GA is doing is actively removing bots visits because they skew country/browser/etc. data. Maybe Matomo is not doing that (so well)? Another thing is that people blocking GA trackers will also not show up in GA, but will (probably) show up Matomo.
bobviolier··on Google reveals fistful of flaws in Apple's iMessage app
I meant the NDA from the party where the bug is reported, Apple in this case.
bobviolier··on Google reveals fistful of flaws in Apple's iMessage app
Probably not. I think that most of those bounties can only be redeemed when you sign an NDA.
bobviolier··on Anyone made the jump from MySQL to PostreSQL? It is worth it?
You also can't do multi-region on Google Cloud SQL (MySQL). The only thing you can do is run your replica on your own VM and configure it to read from the Master in Google Cloud SQL.

(Or I am completely missing something)

bobviolier··on Equiano, a subsea cable from Portugal to South Africa
I am gonna guess he meant a datacenter for Google Cloud. Google probably has their own points-of-presence for Google and YouTube.
bobviolier··on Show HN: WorldBrain – full text, local search of your browsing history
Does Firefox search IN the content of the pages you visited?

Almost can't imagine and in my test just now, that did not work.

bobviolier··on Show HN: WorldBrain – full text, local search of your browsing history
⌘+Y On the mac. It's the bottom option in the history menu.
bobviolier··on GitLab 10.4 released
Same here! We love GitLab CI
bobviolier··on Google Maps Gets a New Look
Howwww do I get speed limits on Google Maps while driving? I really want this. Sometimes I just start Waze, just because of this.
bobviolier··on MessageBird raises $60M Series A
That's no problem! If you drop us a message, I think we can cater to your needs :-)
bobviolier··on GitLab 9.3 released
We've had the same issue with "Squash commits", which are now turned on by default.
