bobby_9x··on Los Angeles hospital paid hackers $17,000 ransom in Bitcoins
The IT staff at this hospital should be fired. They should have never been in a position to be compromised.
bobby_9x··on Zenefits Scandal Highlights Perils of Hypergrowth at Startups
It's more the 'unions' than the 'regulations'. It's in the best interest of any union to keep prices inflated artificially by utilizing government regulations, like the medallion system.
bobby_9x··on Republican-Leaning Cities Are at Greater Risk of Job Automation
Pretty much all tech jobs, by definition, have automated someone out of a job, but they aren't included in these statistics.
bobby_9x··on As Marijuana Sales Grow, Startups Step in for Wary Banks
"Latinos are incarcerated at 1.5x the rate of whites, blacks 3x as much, despite drug use being equal across the board"

These studies are flawed. They are based on the person telling the truth about their drug usage.

"Do we call those who grew and sold pot to feed their families entrepreneurs, are they idolized in think pieces?"

What about the people that sell guns to feed their families?

"The entire industry has been whitewashed and is still prey to the same racist fears that spurred its prohibition in the first place."

You must be smoking weed, because this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Nobody is still attributing weed to only non-whites.

Look at how weed is characterized in movies and TV: white, dopey, college kids.

bobby_9x··on China Deploys Missiles on Disputed Island in South China Sea
Yes, a thug that has to spend all of its military money defending other countries..so they can throw it back in their face that they don't spend as much on the military.

Without the US, the world would be fucked.

bobby_9x··on How Wired Is Going to Handle Ad Blocking
I'm fine with some people using Ad-block because they don't like ads. But, when it's automatically installed on masses of computers, it starts to really become a problem.

This will only create a fractured Internet and make it difficult for small startups to survive.

bobby_9x··on Berlin-based language learning app maker Babbel hits 1M paying customers
They took spaced-repetition and added another level of study to it.

Very cool.

bobby_9x··on A Message to Our Customers
Google worked with the NSA and Facebook not only worked with the NSA, but now has ties to China and the Chinese government (which have the most advanced spying and censoring Internet technology around).

So, I'm doubtful.

bobby_9x··on FCC commissioner: U.S. tradition of free expression slipping away
This 1000 times. We are also doing our college students a disservice by creating 'safe spaces'.

This is just a continuation of the mentality that 'everyone should get a trophy' that started in the early 90s.

I still remember when I was in school (which is when all of this started) and we would be required to end kickball games early, so we could 'tie'.

If you can't handle being offended, you won't ever learn how to overcome it.

bobby_9x··on How to win an online argument: lessons from Reddit
The irony isn't lost on anyone, I see.
bobby_9x··on How to win an online argument: lessons from Reddit
I find it pretty ironic that HN groupthink modded me down for talking about why I don't like groupthink.
bobby_9x··on How to win an online argument: lessons from Reddit
Might isn't right. There are groups for pretty much anything out there, even when it's factually, morally, and ridiculously wrong.
bobby_9x··on P2P Finance: Are Banks Losing Their Positions?
No. P2P Finance will never be able to cover the risk that a bank can cover.

It's the same with bitcoin: With a credit card, I can pretty much dispute any charge and get my money back. Bitcoin is as risky as cash and I won't ever be able to get my money back if someone scams me.

I much prefer centralized solutions. Decentralized solutions might be good for people that can't ever get loans from a traditional bank (due to risk), but not so good for people loaning out the money.

bobby_9x··on Everyone’s offended these days
It's not being offended by 'attempts to be considerate`.

I feel like many of bullied are not getting the therapy they truly need. Instead, they are becoming the bullies through sites like Twitter and big companies, schools, and now even governments are catering to their whims because nobody wants the bad press.

The same feminist group that twitter appointed to ther new free-speech censorship board has said some of the most horrific stuff about men. It’s beyond offensive, yet there are no bannings or accountability.

These groups see direct results and the power they have over individuals.

It really needs to stops or we will have no freedoms left and the mentally ill will be in charge of our lives.

bobby_9x··on When a Self-Declared Genius Asks You to Read His Masterpiece
The guys is a bully and just looking at some of his tweets and emails, looks like he has a mild mental illness.
bobby_9x··on We're hearing about troubles at Nest
I disagree. Most people don’t want to hear the truth and will take anything they don’t want to hear as a personal attack against them.

I’ve seen it time and time again.. and then pushed out on social media to make the person that said it look like the bad guy...and since it’s usually one person against another, it’s impossible to defend.

This is why when the technology gets cheap enough, I will have a secret body cam on me at all times.

It’s already been proven many times that privacy no longer matters. Hell, a guy got an entire basketball team taken away from him based on private conversations.

bobby_9x··on There is no shortage of STEM workers
Software developers already have the best benefits, a union will not be an improvement.
bobby_9x··on How to win an online argument: lessons from Reddit
Win an argument online? Lol!

The real problem, especially on a site like reddit, is that there is no winning.

Even if you have evidence and facts, if you go against groupthink, you will be shouted down, down voted, and ignored.

If you really piss the wrong person off, you will be bullied and could lose your job/career over it.

bobby_9x··on We're hearing about troubles at Nest
I've also seen honesty being confused with being an 'asshole'.

You tell someone something they don't want to hear, but need to hear, and you are now known as an asshole.

bobby_9x··on There is no shortage of STEM workers
"As it is now, very few specialists have enough clout to arrest the current momentum, and software professionals, hardware professionals, healthcare workers, and engineers are likely the only ones that wouldn't be scoffed out of the room if they threatened a general strike."

..and why would they strike? This group is probably in the top 10% of workers paid in the US.

I find it a little strange that a group that has the most power, money, and benefits even thinks about striking.

bobby_9x··on The Golden Generation: Why China’s super-rich send their children abroad
Why wouldn't you transfer your money out of China?

Billionaires are going 'missing' every month and the government can pretty much take over your business and take all of your money, for any reason.

To make any kind of money there, you need to pay huge bribes.

bobby_9x··on Leaving PHP is too expensive
For web projects, I still use PHP+Codeigniter. There still aren't good, mature, battle tested frameworks in any other language.

If I could, I would gladly replace my code base with Python.

Edit: It's pretty telling about the HN community when I simply post an honest opinion about my coding practices, and I am down voted into oblivion.

How are we ever going to actually progress when we can't even talk about things openly and honestly without getting the equivalent of shouted down.

Your feelings may be hurt, but I'm still not going to use Django until it improves.

bobby_9x··on States consider allowing kids to learn coding instead of foreign languages
"rote learning, treated like any other subject, lack of practical application"

I'm onto my second foreign language and you need rote memorization.

A good method for learning involves a combination of practical application+rote memorization. The problem is that in a classroom setting, if you just sit around talking, nobody will learn anything.

I also ran a language learning meetup group and tried multiple methods of study. Structured lessons with rote memorization plus practical application/speaking worked the best.

I also took Spanish in a US public school for 3 years and we had a combination of both. There is no magic. If you truly want to learn a foreign language, it takes tons of discipline and time.

Most people give up at any hint of difficulty or plateau at a very basic level.

bobby_9x··on Ask HN: Is Python dying?
Go doesn't have anywhere near the amount of libraries or support that we see with Python.

Python isn't being assaulted on any front. We have always had multiple programming languages and some are better than others.

My issue is that we seem to have these fad languages, like Ruby-on-rails. I still remember when it was rammed down our throats on HN around ~2008 and you were instantly down voted if you wanted to objectively talk about it's pros and cons.

Now, all of the same people from that community (which I noticed, are mostly designers, not developers) have jumped ship and moved into Javascript frameworks like Ember.js and node.js.

PHP, while flawed and not cool anymore, is still one of the most popular languages.

Python will be around for a long time.

bobby_9x··on Ask HN: Why is there only one Reddit?
There are tons of sites like Reddit. However, people need a reason to leave Reddit to go to one of these new sites.

Unless they pull a Digg, this probably won't ever happen. Reddit actually got really lucky that Digg collapsed when it did, or we might even be using it today.

bobby_9x··on How open source makes Swedish startups stronger [video]
It makes Swedish startups stronger (and any other startups) because you don't have to put as much money into software licensing.

When you have more time than money, it makes sense. When your company gets big enough and you have more money than time, more proprietary/commercial software becomes an option.

bobby_9x··on The Case for Reparations
Can we please stop with all of the political articles. HN is a place for hacker news.
bobby_9x··on What Would Happen If Bernie Sanders Taxed Wall Street?
The problem is that he is saying he will only tax Wall Street, but it's pretty obvious to anyone with an interest in economics, that it won't stop there.

To fund everything he wants, everyone will be taxed.

He said one time that he wants the upper tax bracket (federal) to be 56%. With state+federal+local taxes, this means your actual tax rate will be closer to 75% (just like in Norway, which is what he wants to emulate).

It's strange that so many people criticize Trump for discriminating against minorities, when Sanders is doing the same thing.

The 1% is a minority in this country and his main plat form is taking everything he possible can away from them and using them as a scapegoat for everyone's problems.

I call it 'economic fascism'.

bobby_9x··on Should Startups Focus on Profitability or Not?
One issue many founders never think of is that if you get VC and focus on growth and not profit, you are putting yourself in a riskier position where your shares could be worthless.

If the company ever sells, they will definitely be looking at profit when it comes to valuation and if it's over-valued, VC gets paid out first.

I think many startup founders have it backwards: They have a good idea and they try to shoe-horn in a business model (that sometimes works).

Instead, come up with the business model first and then come up with a great idea around it. I've done this with my last two companies and I was profitable from day 1.
