bobby_9x··on Researchers say Disney/Pixar movies underrepresent poor/minimize hardships
Disney/Pixar movies are supposed to be feel-good movies for children.

Of course they don't represent reality, and they shouldn't.

bobby_9x··on Today Is the Day I Get Fired
"I've found the best employees often have let go of the fear of being fired. They can speak truth to power, stand up for what is right as opposed to what is expected, and they generally leave the place better than they found it. It was interesting watching people at Sun change when Sun going public suddenly meant those people didn't have to work if they didn't want to. Much more engaged, much more willing to look at alternatives and to take risks in pursuit of a better outcome overall."

If you are 20, with no kids or family, it's great to have this mindset. However, you can't have this mindset if you have a family or other people to support.

Every place I have ever worked has politics. You need to figure out these politics to survive and many times 'standing up for what is right' will get you fired or you will seen as a person that causes strife and passed up for promotions.

I can't tell you how many times I've worked on a software project where we were making really bad decisions that came directly from management.

Doing things the 'right way' means going against your superiors, and it has many negative consequences. When you are young, you can take these risks.

It's one of the reasons I started my own company. I was tired of playing politics.

bobby_9x··on Hard Tech is Back
Gratitude?

OSS is supposed to be about donating your time, without asking for anything in return.

Othetwise, you are just as bad as your perception of silicon valley.

bobby_9x··on NSA data will soon routinely be used for domestic policing
"and that's a valid point in a country where blacks, for example, are much more likely to receive the death penalty for committing the same offences."

I would really like to see these statistics from a legitimate source, because I'm not sure where you are even getting it.

My issue is that the 'black lives matter' cause has merely become a thinly disguised fascist group aimed at bullying and destroying anyone that disagrees with them.

"Hands up, don't shoot" never happened. This was proven, yet it didn't stop the hashtag warriors from screaming it at everybody and news anchors on networks from CNN standing behind it (after it was proven false).

Facts no longer matter. It's all about the narrative that everyone is racist against blacks, no matter what actually happened.

All of these protests have added body cams to many police forces. Most people are now silent about it. I have seen case after case where a cop is accused of 'racism' and the body cam shows otherwise.

The US is probably the least racist country in the world when it comes to minorities. Try to get a job in Asia, Europe, or Africa. You will quickly see the difference.

In most countries outside the US, you are required to send them a picture and they can not hire you for pretty much any reason.

Instead of focusing on being a victim, the minorities in the US should focus on education and keeping families in tact. It's really the only path to success. The Irish, Italians, and Chinese were all treated like slaves in this country and were able to overcome this through education and a strong family structure.

I've worked at many different companies and I've never seen racism in terms of hiring (although I'm sure it happens in a small amount of cases). Businesses just want someone that can do the job. If a person isn't getting past the hiring manager, it's most likely because they don't have the required skill set.

Many people like me, are angry and frustrated because the alleged victims have now become the bullies. I wish we could have true equality, where race truly doesn't matter, but I think I'm asking for too much.

It's funny how true equality is seen as a bad thing. I am now part of the counter-culture, which means I don't want aggressive bullies being allowed to control the speech and actions of me or others.

I don't want our society to continue along this broken and misguided path and it's why many educated people are voting for Trump.

bobby_9x··on Not Everyone Is An Artist
"This has left artists frustrated, desperately searching for ways to stand out amongst all the noise, and furthermore, find sustainability amongst a fickle social landscape."

This entire article reeks of elitism: A platform for the 'real' artists.

But this is going to be a problem with anything that can be digitized and put on the Internet going forward: There is now way more noise than signal.

bobby_9x··on Hoaxy: A Platform for Tracking Online Misinformation
I think the issue is that many times, 'misinformation' boils down to perspective and personal views, unless it's a straight fact, which is almost never the case.

It ends up being used as a way to stifle dissenting views and control the narrative.

bobby_9x··on Grocery-Delivery Startup Instacart Cuts Pay for Couriers
Less money to go around means eithet less jobs or the existing employees need to work more hours.
bobby_9x··on NSA data will soon routinely be used for domestic policing
This sounds exactly like what is happening right now.

"All lives matter" gets you harassed and possibly fired.

bobby_9x··on What Happens When the Surveillance State Becomes an Affordable Gadget?
I actually can't wait.

As soon as I can, I'm going to wear a body camera at all times and record all footage. Why? Privacy doesn't matter anymore and in this day and age, it becomes one word against another.

People are so eager to jump to social media to destroy a person's life and livelihood, it will almost become a necessary form of social insurance.

bobby_9x··on Tesla Model S owner hit with $11,000 fine for excessive emissions
It's in Singapore, so I'm not surprised.

A business colleague of mine lives in Singapore and paid $100,000 for a driver's license. This doesn't include the 100% tax on the car and the black box that he needs to have in the car at all times (If he travels to certain areas of the city, he pays a tax).

To get a license you pay into a lottery system and are randomly picked. You don't get the money back.

bobby_9x··on Ask HN: If a previous startup failed with your same idea, is that a bad sign?
I think the bigger issue is just relying on an app. Most apps are a few dollars. You will not be able to sustain a steady paycheck with this kind of business model.

Apps should be a freebie (not literally free in all cases, but cheap) that is merely a hook/marketing channel for your business.

bobby_9x··on Twitter Bets on Payouts to Rein in Talent Flight
We shouldn't be lauding Twitter. They have done everything in their power to stifle free speech and promote hate speech.

The last straw for me was the hit squad of special interest groups they enlisted to search out and remove opposing viewpoints.

bobby_9x··on [dead]
It's been down for weeks. This is news because......
bobby_9x··on Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug
It makes sense just based on statistics. Americans have more access to pain killers than any illegal drug and just based on this, will result in more mis-use (and death).

If illegal drugs were all made legal tomorrow, we would see something similar.

bobby_9x··on In SF and Rooting for a Tech Slowdown
Well, if we all start feeling the Bern, they won't have to worry: silicon valley will be gone.
bobby_9x··on Let’s ban elementary homework
This will only hurt the inner city students.

I know a few teachers in some really poor areas and many teachers have to fight against unearning at home.

Homework helps with this. I also don't think a student can learn enough in the classroom. With ever growing class sizes, students just can't get all they need in terms of learning, without homework.

I just have to shake my head at one more thing that will put our future generation behind the rest of the world.

bobby_9x··on Millennials Are Poorer Than Their Parents, Investigation Finds
Many are poor due to their own choices.

I know many millennials that spend way too much on the newest gadgets/cell phones (I spend $30/month and get a cheap phone as opposed to the hundreds of dollars many pay on a plan and a new phone).

Jobs are also an issue. Millennials have more education than their parents, but many choose not to use it. I know at least 5 millennials that either quit a well-paying job or just refuse to work at any company that isn’t ”changing the world”.

I attribute it to entitlement. They feel they are owed a satisfying and well-paying job, when in reality, you need to earn it over many years.

More proof of this is in their voting habits. Sanders is tje entitlement president and is supported, by far, by millennials.

bobby_9x··on [dead]
If race is just a description of a person, why does it matter that there only 36 blacks and 73 hispanics at Facebook?

Employment should be based on merit, not race. To say otherwise is........ racist.

bobby_9x··on Ask HN: Why did Google Buzz fail?
Because it had a very disjointed user interface and most people just didn't see the point.
bobby_9x··on Foreigners turn to India in search of cut-price, life-saving cures
This is why we need to completely get rid of health insurance in the US. If Hospitals could only charge the actual value for their services, and not the inflated insurance prices, the prices would be much lower.

One of my friends is a Doctor. He told me that they need to over-charge for services because of the insurance companies. If they charge $20 (the actual cost of the service), they might get $4 back from the insurance company. If they charge $100, they might get the $20 from the insurance company for the service. We need to cut out the middle man. It's basic economics.

The drug issue in the US is mostly the fault of the government. It takes hundreds of millions of dollars and 10+ years to get FDA approval. This stifles innovation and creates an environment where there are only a few players (IE: a monopoly). The result is ridiculous prices due to no competition.

bobby_9x··on Welfare is not Socialism
The US already has a countless number of welfare programs. When I was growing up, we had lots of neighbors that continued to have children (and couldn't afford them) only because with each new child, they received a boost in welfare.

You are wrong about Socialism, however. Many people in this country DO want Socialism. They feel like somehow the system is 'rigged against them' (which is pretty much the exact same thing Che, Mao, and the Viet cong proclaimed to their followers).

In reality, it's all used as ammo to get politicians into power. People like Bernie Sanders aren't in it for the money, they are in it for the power..which is just as dangerous.

We have the highest standard of living in history and anyone with an idea has at least a chance at making a success.

Socialism (or Democratic Socialism) removes all of these chances and will pretty much make your future decisions for you: You will either work for the government or a large corporation mostly owned by the government due to the regulations and astronomical taxes.

It's not good for the average person and will only create an environment that resists advances and lowers everyone's standard of living.

bobby_9x··on “I've been working at Mozilla for many years, from peak to decline”
Some folks might think that donating money to an abortion clinic amounts to something just as bad, so it's really all about political beliefs.

It's ridiculous to me that a group that is supposed to be against oppression, bigotry, and bullying, practices exactly this when it involves people with differing beliefs.

It only makes people like Trump even more popular.

bobby_9x··on Show HN: Let's encourage ad blocking
I've never seen a group so ready and willing to destroy their chances at future success.

Ads are pretty much the only way to make a living when you are bootstrapping. These blocks, like all of the other silly things in this community meant to hurt the big, bad, corporations, do nothing but strengthen them.

It's an automated way to remove competition. The people with resources and money will survive (as always) and the rest will suffer the consequences of their short-sighted actions.

It happened with the music industry over the last two decades (1 million plays on spotify nets you $1000, if you are lucky).

I’m glad I have resources: I can get a good deal on labor when these sorts of movements decimate an indusry.

bobby_9x··on Study Finds No Gender Gap in Tech Salaries
Don't let the facts get in the way of a good discussion. These facts have been out for at least 5 years now and nobody cares.
bobby_9x··on Norway's National Transit Plan Will Spend $1B on New Bike Highways
This works well...unless you have physical problems and can't actually ride a bike or are elderly.

Norway has long winters and short summers: http://www.expatarrivals.com/norway/weather-in-norway

This is a really stupid idea in this sort of climate.

bobby_9x··on Ask HN: Was Mark Zuckerberg wrong to call All Lives Matter employees malicious?
"The main reason people take offense at the ALM slogan is that it seems belittling of the (very serious, and more to the point, seriously unequal) threats to their physical safety that blacks (and other minority groups) have to deal with on a daily basis."

Do you have proof of this? The few cases we see in the media nearly all involved criminals fighting or antagonizing the police.

I have yet to see a case where a minority was minding their own business and the cops came and decided to shoot them dead.

The real issue is minority -> minority homicide rates. It's astronomical compared to pretty much any other statistic. Yet, it's not hip or cool to talk about.

The main problem I see is that all of these groups are separating us even more by race, to gain power.

Just look at all of these groups on college campuses that only allow minorities to participate (whites need not apply).

It's the exact same type of racist bullshit that happened during the 50s and 60s in this country, but because the shoe is on the other foot, it's somehow justified.

All lives do matter. Until we can accept this, we will never have equality.

bobby_9x··on Why YC
Why is this a good thing? Shouldn't we be striving for a merit based system and not a system that benefits the few people that are able to get through the YC interview process?
bobby_9x··on Trump Is Right, Bush Lied: A Little-Known Part of the Bogus Case for War
Whether you would like to believe it or not, it's pretty well known that the weapons were moved. There are top-level military leaders that have described it in detail.

I'm really tired of hearing this. We could also blame Bill Clinton for 9/11 because he never took out Bin Laden when he had the chance (which is also documented).

But why bother? We need to focus on the present and the future, not the past.

bobby_9x··on Once you’ve had Airbnb, you (often) don’t go back, says Goldman Sachs
I disagree. For me, personally, I will only use Airbnb as a cheaper alternative to hotels (everyone I know does this too).

The results are mixed. I've had people outright lie in their listing or do completely inappropriate things while I was staying there.

Hotels are still a different experience: you know the experience is pretty much going to be the same (beds, bathroom, etc), it's professional, and sometimes you just don't want to talk to anyone.

bobby_9x··on Is it time to centralize hiring?
Why would a company give another company so much power over their hiring practices?

Hiring is an important skill for every successful company and the more you use these centralized services, the more you will be dependent on them.

At some point they will realize this and start calling the shots and because you now have none of the required hiring knowledge, you are stuck.
