bnt··on Phoenix 1.7 is View-less
Well, unless it moves completely to Websockets, it will still remain a slow mess.
bnt··on I wrote a Ruby extension in Zig
Noob question: why isn’t Rails a native extension? Would that make it quicker?
bnt··on Twitter has flagged all the major Mastodon servers as malware
Why? Mastodon will never take off.
bnt··on SBF scheduled to testify tomorrow at US House hearing on FTX collapse
Yea, like destroying 100s of thousands of small account owners on Binance. Because the guy looks “Chinese” (but he multiple times publicly stated he is not Chinese).
bnt··on Twitter Office Supply Auction
Reddit has hundreds (maybe even thousands?) freelance devs working remote, full time. You’re only counting FTEs.
bnt··on Design Gifts: 50% off a yearly Sketch plan
Is anyone still using Sketch? Their yearly licensing killed it for me.
bnt··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
But imagine the size of that power brick.
bnt··on Microsoft is phoning home the content of PowerPoint slides
How about Grammarly? Or G-suite? They have access to most of the companies out there. I find it terrifying people use Grammarly and it has access to every piece of confidential word written.
bnt··on PR that converts the TypeScript repo from namespaces to modules
Tabs
bnt··on Life after Heroku: What's a dev to do?
Apparently Heroku is a welfare state program and everyone is entitled to free shit.
bnt··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
I’m not aware of any government back door access, but carriers that I worked with had access to all sorts of crazy hidden SDKs within iOS. For transparency, last time I worked on those was 5-6 years ago, so things may have changed.
bnt··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
You can’t grant access on iOS “to view / edit / delete all/any data”, that’s physically not possible, even with the hidden SDKs that only select parties have access to.
bnt··on Why doesn't Stripe use Stripe Billing?
Email? “Massive outage” for Twilio would bring down a lot of products, they would have to be back up in minutes.
bnt··on $100B and 10 Yrs of Development Later and Self-Driving Cars Can Barely Turn Left
Thousands of years of evolution and billions of drivers later, I can still barely make a left turn. Honestly, some intersections are just terrible.
bnt··on The Crimean Bridge Is on Fire
Russia is using shit, but that shit caused 100s of billions in damage. Yes, Ukraine is pushing them out with more superior weaponry, but the damage Russian “shit” left will be felt for decades.

Source: lived through something similar 30 years ago, sponsored by Russia.

bnt··on Germany Secures Just One Tanker of Gas During Scholz’s Gulf Tour
Obviously we should have started diversifying from Russian gas back in 2014. But hindsight is 20/22.
bnt··on American Company Spinning-up an office in Europe
There are people / companies that will do it for you: registration, office, recruitment.
bnt··on The movie Hackers was released 27 years ago
I still remember watching it as a kid when it came out, it’s one of the reasons I got into programming in the first place. The alure of being a ninja hacker to a 8 year old was hard to escape. Funny enough, it took another 6 years until I got my first computer, and another 2 after that when I got access to the internet.
bnt··on U.S. considers China sanctions to deter Taiwan action, Taiwan presses EU
Pre-Ukraine invasion vibes here. Looks like US intelligence knows things not yet made public.
bnt··on Ask HN: Why aren't there more 'Liveview' implementations?
Laravel has it, Rails has it, even Django has it.
bnt··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Next to CarPlay it says "Vehicle announcement coming in late 2023" - what is this related to? Showing car-related information in CarPlay, or are they announcing a car of their own?
bnt··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
I strongly recommend this channel if you're into all-things semiconductor industry. Great insights and (pretty much) every episode is well written and to the point.
bnt··on Design the next iPhone
But you only need to "power" it once in like a month. You "turn it on" by tapping the screen. You "turn it off" by putting it aside or in your pocket. Power button on the side is a weird choice.
bnt··on Why Apple Will Switch to ARM-Based Macs (2014)
The 12” will be (in my personal memory) the best Apple product I have ever owned.
bnt··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
Meanwhile, plenty of gems have gone abandoned.
bnt··on GM makes $1,500 subscription mandatory on GMC, Buick, Cadillac Models
Meanwhile in EU, I can configure any Volkswagen-group car down to the finest detail and have it delivered to a dealer of my choice, and the price will be the same across all dealers.
bnt··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
I feel OP is welcoming Germany’s demise as the Economic Powerhouse of Europe rather than suffering of people. Tho, both are linked because Germany is a net-importer of human capital and many will be forced to move back East, thus further pushing East Europe back into poverty.
bnt··on To uncover a deepfake video call, ask the caller to turn sideways
Depending where the bot is and what time of day it is, it might tell you the wrong day of the week.
bnt··on 23M Californians to get up to $1,050 in “inflation relief” checks
Someone needs to teach Dems some basics of economics. In WSB terms: "Money printer goes brrrr"
bnt··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
Do you have any idea of the SIZE of some States and distances between HOMES, not just towns? Public transport is not feasible in some places, as are not bikes. Am I supposed to bike 30 miles for a gallon of milk? How do I bring it back?
