bmlzootown··on Web Server on a Nintendo Wii
Fun fact, my Wii running Linux was my first server. I had a webserver running, and an IRC bouncer (ZNC). Anything outside the standard "it's available on every architecture" type stuff require manual compilation, however, which can take forever.
bmlzootown··on Store birth date in systemd for age verification
This is absolutely ridiculous.
bmlzootown··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
They've made it into an actual skit now? I remember when it was just a regular old meme.
bmlzootown··on Fluxer: Free, open source instant messaging and VoIP platform
I could understand Discord taking issue with the UI, but the logo? White on blue isn't exactly original and/or trademark/copyright worthy.
bmlzootown··on How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM
Since the last major jailbreak for Kindle devices was released, I've been using Koreader as well on my Scribe. I have progress syncing setup with Hardcover (Goodreads alternative) instead, however. Only downside is their recommendations don't seem to be well geared to my interests at this point, but hopefully that'll change in the future as more use the service.
bmlzootown··on Samsung extends Android and security updates to 7 years
I was genuinely hoping that this would extend back to at least the 10 series. I'm still daily driving my S10+ that I got when it first came out with no major issues other than the eventual lack of updates. Battery life is still great, very minimal wear and tear. Only real complaint I have at this point is that, post TMobile-Sprint merger, signal strength is rather odd at work now.
bmlzootown··on Goodreads has no incentive to be good
Yeah, I've read the same book multiple times before, years apart, without realizing it. Only when I went back to Goodreads later to mark it as read did I realize that... well, I had already read it.

On the flip side, I can enjoy a book more than once. This is a definite plus.

bmlzootown··on Bard uses a Hacker News comment as source to say that Bard has shut down
I'm all for historically low housing prices, but as for the rest... I'm not sure we should invoke any sort of Black Mirror-esque scenario on the world. Reality is already dark, grim, and eerie enough as is.
bmlzootown··on Show HN: I trained an AI model on 120M+ songs from iTunes
Volume control is a must. I had my headphones on, at normal volume, and... let's just say I didn't realize just how loud it would be.

Other than that, however, this seems neat. I've been trying to listen to new music lately, so this'll definitely come in handy.

bmlzootown··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
If we, as a species, only learned from our own personal experiences, we'd still be dwelling in caves.
bmlzootown··on DHS announces extension of Real ID full enforcement deadline
Literally stood outside the DMV the other day for more than hour in sub-40F weather to get my real id.
bmlzootown··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
The same is true for some other primates. Eye contact seems to be a sign of aggression:

bmlzootown··on Reconstructing images a person sees via non-invasive brain scans
Visualize the text, "welcome to my Ted talk."
bmlzootown··on New asteroid strike images show impact 'a lot bigger than expected'
I mean, they quote Ian Carnelli in the article, saying that he expects a "much bigger deflection than (he) had planned". That said, the article also mentions that it will take Earth-bound telescopes/radars at least a week to get initial estimates in regard to the change of the asteroid's orbit, and then three to four weeks before getting precise measurements.

I think the real takeaway here is just that something unexpected happen. They're monitoring as they would have regardless, and results will come in time. Expecting results and/or a conclusion this early is, well, jumping the gun.

bmlzootown··on GitHub user sends notification to 400k users
I'm up to about 156 replies between two emails now. My phone and smart watch were buzzing like crazy earlier for each notification.
bmlzootown··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the term "factoid" was believed to be coined by Normal Mailer in a book he wrote about Marilyn Monroe. Per said book, factoids are "facts which have no existence before appearing in a magazine or newspaper, creations which are not so much lies as a product to manipulate emotion in the Silent Majority."

While many use "fact" and "factoid" interchangeably, they are (by original definition) inherently two entirely different things.

bmlzootown··on Twitter board adopts poison pill after Musk’s $43B bid to buy company
The important question is this -- why does he believe those things?

This is the same man that at one point tried to say that he was the founder of Tesla.

Saying things that I agree with doesn't mean that I should inherently be in favor of said person doing X, Y, or Z.

bmlzootown··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
We've had local business owners come in before that have tried to haggle with us. Even had one specifically point out repeatedly that he ran a business so he knew how it worked. Wouldn't take no for an answer.

It frustrates me to no end when someone doesn't understand the word "no".

bmlzootown··on Twitter makes it harder to choose the old reverse-chronological feed
It should be accessible from the normal settings. Click on your profile avatar, settings and privacy, GoodTwitter2.
bmlzootown··on Twitter makes it harder to choose the old reverse-chronological feed
GoodTwitter2[0] is the only reason that I still use the web version anymore. I can handle the mobile interface on a mobile device, but making the desktop experience mobile-themed was the straw that almost broke the camel's back. GoodTwitter2 mostly fixes that, thankfully.

The userscript also fixes the reverse-chronological issue. There's literally a setting that enables one to force "Latest Tweets First" mode, so it'll switch back to the "latest" feed whenever Twitter has decided that you should be viewing their "home" feed instead.

bmlzootown··on Workers are calling out sick in droves
From a worker's prospective, it sucks, but it's also rather bad from the employer's perspective as well (at least in my experience). Having to ask sick people to come in is not something I or my coworker want to do, but we're so low on staff right now that, if an individual tests negative and isn't running a fever, we need all the help we can get.

Two other managers are currently out, multiple department heads and regular associates are out, and it's just the two of us running the show. I pulled a 12 hour shift Sunday just so said coworker could have a day off, and they're doing the same today for me. Just trying to open/close on time has been incredibly difficult lately, having to call around to cover morning/night shifts that people suddenly call out for. I'm not sure how much longer I can do this. I need this whole pandemic to come to a close solely for the sake of my own physical/mental wellbeing, if not also for everyone else's.

bmlzootown··on Ask HN: Are you happy with your current job?
Am I happy? No. Working retail before the pandemic wasn't the best, but it was doable. Now? I'm not sure how much longer I can do this. Between rude customers and (semi-)incompetent coworkers, I'm closer than I've ever been to just leaving my keys on the counter and walking out.

I can give the most basic instructions, describe exactly how to do something, even go so far as to show how to do it, and yet I still have key individuals who will stare at me blankly and then ask me to repeat myself multiple times... And then when I come back to check up on them, they've messed everything up, totally disregarding everything I've said/showed them.

My boss expects me to hand-hold, but this is not doable. I can't hover over people 24/7 when, even with no regard as for how they do things, they still can't manage to get things done in a timely manner. They've all been trained time and time again, so it's not like they haven't been shown how to do things and what the expectations are. Most of the freight has been run by management for months now because of this, and I'm almost at wits end. But with the current state of things, finding competent workers is nearly impossible, and keeping them is even more difficult when they see the absurdities around them.

So far I've managed to cope by living moment to moment. When I work on something, I do my best to tune everything else out. I try to get in the 'flow', losing myself while I work mindlessly. Each day is still getting harder, however.

bmlzootown··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
I didn't even think to try and do such with uBlock, and this precompiled list gives me all the more reason to do so. Thank you!
bmlzootown··on Winamp
The site brought my S10+ to a screeching halt. I had to force-kill Harmonic, the HN client I use on my phone, just to get out of it. Site preloading via an in-app webview is nice until you happen upon a site like this.
bmlzootown··on Cloud-to-butt plugin used in Amazon Job Posting?
Is it really a commentary on the individual in question, though, or the state of reality?
bmlzootown··on Why can an ad break the Windows 11 desktop and taskbar?
I went so far as to delete the installation directories of any versions of Edge that I could find. Nothing appears to be broken, and I haven't really had to deal with it since (other than random updates seemingly reinstalling it, so I just remove the directories again).
bmlzootown··on To H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks with Facebook
Twitter does the same thing -- they show "top" tweets by default now, rather than latest.

Don't even get me started on their adoption of the mobile UI for desktop...

bmlzootown··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
The line between the two are blurring further every day, though. Might not be that far off in the future when they're actually interchangeable.
bmlzootown··on GitHub – nushell/nushell: A new type of shell
It's the new "I use Arch btw". Genuinely kind of tired of it already.
bmlzootown··on Letter to Freenode – Post Mortem of May 25, 2021
And what's more, the "proof" that he's pointing to is a commit from someone who hasn't contributed to said linked project since June 12th, 2015 (not counting the merging of pull requests).

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that he has no meaningful response, so he instead diverts attention elsewhere.
