bluehorseray··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
I agree. People on HN love to theorize about reshaping current social media platforms, and now we may get to see someone actually attempt to do it. I hope people aren't so invested in Twitter they would rather this not happen.
bluehorseray··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
Calling that the "correct conclusion" is absurd. Whether or not a critic "wanted" to see a movie shouldn't really factor into the review at all. At the end of the day, the typical movie-goer is probably judging a film based off of an entirely different set of criteria (excitement / satisfaction) than a typical movie critic (overall artistic merit). Which isn't an exciting conclusion, but probably more correct.

I would personally rate many movies I've seen lower if you told me to judge it from the perspective of a movie critic as opposed to a general audience member (The Purge for example).

bluehorseray··on [dead]
Hmm I would classify shrooms as medication. What happens if a doctor prescribes it, is it now suddenly medication to you?
bluehorseray··on The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers
I mean I don't think it's that tricky of a concept. Every piece of writing, or art for that matter, is generally supposed to elicit some sort of feeling. The only one this piece made me want to feel was anger or indignation toward the serial killer expert, which I thought was pretty unfair and one-dimensional way of presenting the man. He was well respected in the crime community and by law enforcement, and because he made up a relatively harmless lie the New Yorker kind of eviscerated him in the last paragraph...all to drive home the point you shouldn't lie I guess? Life's more complicated than that.
bluehorseray··on The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers
I guess I was wondering if I should be mad because I didn't find it that fascinating of a story. I personally know multiple people who have told more fantastic lies than the ones this guy has told. Admittedly the way the story was framed I was almost expecting it to be about him killing his partner and becoming a serial killer expert to explore his guilt, so the lie that it never happened seemed tame in comparison.
bluehorseray··on The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers
I don't really like the habit of profiling relatively inconsequential transgressions of people, especially if the people aren't that relevant today. I don't think this guy necessarily deserved a New Yorker article about any lies he told in the past.

Am I supposed to be mad at him? As a matter of fact I've already forgiven him after reading this. The lies made him more interesting.

bluehorseray··on Alive
I'm assuming I'm controlling the cursor projected somewhere in Kunitachi Japan? Pretty cool
bluehorseray··on Someone noticed the Axie Infinity hack 6 days ago
It's a funny tweet but I'm pretty sure this is satire. Not a huge crypto guy but I used to follow Cobie on twitter and while he is a big crypto proponent, he makes jokes like this to poke fun at the ecosystem a lot.
bluehorseray··on Web3 is centralized and inefficient
I don't think it's necessarily sad at all. It seems like centralized systems make the most sense in, well, most systems. And safeguards can be put in place to prevent the centralization from being abused.
bluehorseray··on Ask HN: Got fired from one of my 2 jobs
Most of the good software devs I know actually only have one job, so sounds like you're back to the baseline. But who knows, keep applying and maybe you can push 4/5+ jobs at once, which would obviously mean you're 4/5 times better than most software devs. Good luck.
bluehorseray··on Mariupol's devastation: AP journalists document war's toll
Just to write down a thought that nobody likes to express--maybe the best move is to let a nuclear aggressor take whatever they want. I think in retrospect it might seem like the best move if things take a turn for the worse.
bluehorseray··on Mariupol's devastation: AP journalists document war's toll
That's basically the predicament the entire world has been in ever since the first nuke was developed. It's just that no nuclear power has quite passed a line that another nuclear power isn't willing to accept. If what you said above were to happen we're basically in uncharted territory.

I'd step out on a limb and say maybe the best move is to let the aggressors take whatever they want, nobody really knows.

bluehorseray··on The Lie That Made Me
To be fair that selection process is close enough to how it works for everyone in the world, minus not wanting anything to do with them hah
bluehorseray··on Ask HN: What do you think of the metaverse? [March 2022]
I think it's interesting. I've tried on my roomate's VR headset a few times and thought it was pretty incredible, but like him haven't really put it on more than once or twice.

I'm starting to think maybe the reason is because it's too realistic. People want to play video games and browse the internet because it's in a sweet spot of comforting and mind-numbing, to the extent they can just sit and do that all day. VR doesn't quite hit that spot I don't think.

If a kid had a full paintball course in his backyard with players on standby, and could play anytime he wanted, do you think he would do that or play COD on ps5 more? Honestly I think COD.

bluehorseray··on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is under fire
Interesting, largest nuclear power plant in Europe and 4th largest in the world. You can see a lot of the cars alarms are going off, I wonder what set them off.
bluehorseray··on A Look at the Slow, Silent Death of America’s Middle Class
I feel like the left has historically been simply pro immigration, and then somehow race was brought into the conversation. I won't name the party I think responsible.
bluehorseray··on A Look at the Slow, Silent Death of America’s Middle Class
Haha I would love to hear how the left made immigration all about race as opposed to the right.
bluehorseray··on Ask HN: Where is all the video footage of fighting in Ukraine
Yea I wonder that as well, I just try keep in mind that every video / story might not be exactly what it seems and to use my own judgement. But at the same time I bet a good amount of it is real. It's kind of the first major military operation of a nation outside of the middle east in the time of social media and smartphones. I would expect a lot of footage to get out.
bluehorseray··on Ask HN: Where is all the video footage of fighting in Ukraine
I've been seeing a lot of videos posted on social media and then posted to reddit.

bluehorseray··on Tech dude rips off Wordle, angers internet
Honestly I don't have too much of a problem with this. I played wordle and really liked it, enough to want to play it more than once a day. If someone's willing to provide that I think it's a good thing, and it's not as if the original creator couldn't have done so himself. I think the OG creator was being a little too idealistic with the 1/day limit (and naive if he didn't think there would be copies that let you play more).
bluehorseray··on Ask HN: How to Become an Artist?
Haven't read it, and it may be more abstract than what you're looking for, but I've heard good things about Jerry Saltz's book "How to Be an Artist" (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084CSQRWZ). He's a pretty well-respected and candid Pulitzer-winning art critic.
bluehorseray··on FAA investigating controversial crash video
Someone on youtube also pointed out that the day this occurred just so happens to be the 50th anniversary of DB Cooper's jump (November 24, 1971). For some reason I don't think that's a coincidence.
bluehorseray··on The biggest crypto lending company is a ponzi scheme
I think people underestimate how long fraudulent / ponzi schemes can last. Madoff's ponzi scheme ($65B) went unnoticed for ~50 years until a whistleblower got the SEC to take notice, and it could have potentially gone on a while longer if that hadn't happened. There's a lot more money in the crypto-sphere, and no great way to regulate. I wouldn't be surprised if lots of these entities are able to run on for 100+ years before they implode.
