A live stream of combat between two major countries, in the middle of Europe, right next to the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, and it's on fire.

And we all thought the COVID experience was surreal...

sorry for posting someone's random FB posts in a foreign language (he is an ukrainian and pro-ukraine, but writes in russian), but I'm in dire need of any calming words so - take it or leave it -

among other things, he said, three days ago, that even artillery won't blow it up unless they would shoot at it directly for a very long time, due to some kind of powerful hermetic containment building

Nuclear reactors require active cooling after shutdown, containment buildings are only temporary.

Ever heard of Fukushima?

Ukraine is an electricity exporter according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_electrici....

Is targeting electricity production a de-facto attack on EU infrastructure?

Would taking out Ukraine's electricity generation increase its dependence on Russia (who could sell it), and significantly increase the EU's dependence on Russian gas?

Ukraine isn't in the EU. Using this argument would mean the US blowing up oil infrastructure in the Middle East was also an attack on EU infrastructure.

Ukrainian government warned that this would be the case. Russia should be stopped. They are dangerous, everyone will suffer consequences if they are not stopped.

I fear their incompetence almost more than their malevolence. This is dangerous, but they cannot be stopped. This situation will just keep escalating unfortunately.

it's not even incompetence as much as a disregard for costs and consequences. prisoner dilemma doesn't work if one of the players' evaluation function is broken

Firefighters are being shot at, according to the spokesman of NPP.

Dupe https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30549116

You can actually see military shooting on the premises. Was war considered during the safety design of the NPP?

It was on fire (in flames) about 10 minutes ago (according to local news).

I just hope for the best.

Says the NPP has some defenses from air attacks. So it may be war-proof after all.

I would be very surprised if it wasn't warproof. Soviets planned for it, they were preparing the entire population for it even in the satellite states.

Is this a strategic location? Why would Russia even risk targeting it?

providing electricity to many cities is kinda strategic i'd say

Radiation as collective punishment for Ukraine.

One of the biggest nuclear power plants in Europe is under fire

The biggest one.

I wonder if Germany will reconsider their anti-nuclear power stance...

Interesting, largest nuclear power plant in Europe and 4th largest in the world. You can see a lot of the cars alarms are going off, I wonder what set them off.

Maybe explosions?

nice thread (this account is good to follow) disproving Ukrainiang propaganda, Western media saying Russians attacked nuclear power plant and put it on fire, while Russians entered without any shooting and then were shot at by Ukrainians causing fire in administrative building, so much for relying on Western media making money on causing panic and spreading misinformation
