blonky··on Dr. Demento Announces Retirement After 55-Year Radio Career
A core memory of mine was listening to the Doc. The show was on late Sunday night so I rarely got to hear the Five Five. One week, it was the Memorial Day weekend. My two closest friends and I were all able to hear the whole show. We met the next day to ride the bus downtown to the big mall. We talked and laughed all day about the songs we heard. Good times :D
blonky··on MonkeysPaw – A prompt-driven web framework in Ruby
This reminds me of something _why the lucky stiff would create.
blonky··on Irrationally pissed at Fisher-Price (2011)
My kids had one of these. It's a clever design. And it's true, the old style was much more interesting. Theoretically, you could press a new record for the old-style. Which would be a cool project.
blonky··on The truth about latchkey kids
Being a latchkey kid hurt me academically. I just couldn't discipline myself to do home work. The lure of the TV or being with friends was too strong. So my grades slipped. I fell behind in math. Homework was stressful when my Mom got home because she couldn't help me. My dad worked swing shift for most of my youth. He would help when he could. If my parents or and afterschool program could have helped me learn how to do homework, I would have been better off.

Overall I was a well-cared for latchkey kid. My brothers and I were fed and my Mom was usually home around 6 or 7.

blonky··on Ask HN: What book had a big impact on you as a child or teenager?
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. It's a sci-fi adventure with self-reliance and counter-cultural themes.
blonky··on What book had a big impact on you as a child or teenager?
Yes! "Danny Dunn, Invisible Boy". It incorporated virtual reality with tiny flying drones for 'invisibility'. It was published in 1974.

I was inspired to make a handwriting copying machine based on the "Homework Machine" book.

Great series!

blonky··on Stereogram Tutorial (2020)
That's my experience. I have to trick my eyes to see it in 'divergent' mode. But all I have to do is cross my eyes and I can see the image. Although, I would see shapes sinking into the page not popping out.
blonky··on Beej's Guide to C Programming
Beej is a great guy. He was my instructor at this boot camp I attended. I learned a little C from him. I can’t really do much with it, but it was fun to learn.
blonky··on Mac OS 9
Oh boy. Those extensions loading. So many times I held my breath when adding a new extension. If it doesn’t then you have to restart in Safe mode, or something. I won’t miss the extensions. OS 9 was cool. I used it a lot on my lime-green imac.
blonky··on Koch method to learn Morse
15 years ago I worked with a guy who was a Navy Veteran. He’d served in Korea. He still knew Morse Code. He confirmed what many are saying here that it’s all about the rhythm.

Once we were asking him about his experience and when he had to go he wrote on the whiteboard. C U N T. I was shocked and embarrassed. He was a professional guy why would he write this word in our workplace? My coworkers and I laughed nervously. He was grinning and said when ships would leave the port you’d message them C U N T in Morse Code. Which stood for "See You Next Trip"

blonky··on Whytheluckystiff's original domain back as an archive
_Why’s work led me to where I am. At a crucial time in my life I found _Why. That put me on a path to learning Ruby and then a whole bunch of steps now I have an actual job as a web developer. I work in Python, but I’m sure _Why won’t mind. Before I found _Why I wasn’t sure what to do with my career-life. He showed me that programming can be art and science.
blonky··on How a Tick Digs Its Hooks In
My dad, an avid hunter/outdoorsman, has told me for years ticks drop from trees.

He's also told stories of ticks on deer the size of golfballs. This is why I stay indoors! [shudder]

blonky··on Surviving 75 hours alone in the ocean
I learned how to do this in Boy Scouts years ago. I doubt I could do it now. Especially in a survival situation.
blonky··on Humira’s Drug Formula: Start at a High Price, Go Higher
I haven't had to pay full price. But, last year I had to pay 20% of the cost. It gets out of control fast since I have to take Remicade every 4 weeks. I was on the hook for about $6000. My bill was cut down because I qualified for charitable funds from my hospital.

It's shocking to see the bill before insurance pays it's share. I was getting bills for $25k. !!!

blonky··on A Beginner´s Guide to Getting Things Done
This was a mantra both my brothers used while going through Marine Corps bootcamp. You don't have to get to the end of the 50-mile-hike. Just take one more step. I always remember this when facing my own seemingly impossible tasks. Mental or physical.
blonky··on The Lava Lamps That Help Keep the Internet Secure
I have a lava lamp on my desk. It generates a lot of heat. That wall must be pretty hot.

Here's the link to Lavarand the reporter references at the end: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavarand

blonky··on WeWork Is Going After Kindergartners Now
I agree. This would make an interesting after-school program. Not a full education.
blonky··on Sloyd
Roy Underhill covered this in an episode of the "Woodwright's Shop." It's a PBS program in the US.

blonky··on Gameboy Camera Extraction Via Arduino
In addition to photos, the Gameboy Camera has a music sequencer thingy. It would be cool to be able to download the music you make from a camera.
blonky··on How to Learn Vim: A Four Week Plan
I learned vim by trying to learn Ruby/Rails(my first experience with programming). It got tedious to open files by looking them up in the Mac Os Finder. Then one day, someone showed me how to tell an application to open a file via the command line. I'm a noob. Vim found its way into my workflow, and I haven't looked back.
blonky··on The Liver: A ‘Blob’ That Runs the Body
My docs told me, while I was waiting for a transplant, that fatty liver is a problem. Even though a donor looks healthy, their liver can be too fatty for transplant. Eat right and exercise.
blonky··on The Liver: A ‘Blob’ That Runs the Body
Yeah, some places are better than others. When I was waiting for a transplant, I lived in the western United States. I shared an organ distribution region with California. My docs told me: "That sucking sound you hear is all the needed organs going to California." Ha! I waited 2.5 years for a transplant.
blonky··on The Liver: A ‘Blob’ That Runs the Body
It is highly unlikely that the recipient is in the same hospital. The ER team who oversees the brain-dead person is not the same team who handles the organ transplantation. The docs who treat the patient with a failed liver aren't the people who decide where the organ(from the deceased donor) goes. This is a myth that needs to die. Doctors don't 'let someone die' because they are an organ donor. There's a complex system in place to regulate the distribution of organs.

edit: I am a liver transplant recipient.
