blairbeckwith··on Lithium-ion batteries a growing fire hazard in NYC garbage trucks
I largely quit vaping right before the rise of disposable vape pens and it is mindblowing to me that they were allowed – by any group including the manufacturers, governments, even consumers – to become a thing. They seem from the outside to be significantly more expensive to produce, tons more e-waste, and not much more convenient than pod systems.
blairbeckwith··on I’ve been single all my life
I can see this. I am not quite an introvert. They treat me as a bit of a novelty, and that often feels lie it includes more “attention” than anyone else in the group.
blairbeckwith··on I’ve been single all my life
Book clubs if you like reading fiction. I'm happily married, but the only guy in a book club of 20.
blairbeckwith··on A Case Study on the Uber Alumni Network
Is this a sarcastic comment, given a pretty good book was written about exactly that?
blairbeckwith··on Better World Books
Another great place to buy books is BookOutlet. They sell primarily overstocked books, and I'm always pleasantly surprised by their selection. I'll add books to an Amazon wishlist than every few months take that list to BookOutlet and search and they usually have 20-30% of what I'm after for less than half of Amazon's price. The books usually come with a single dot or swipe of a sharpie along one of the open page edges for a reason I'm not totally clear on but must have something to do with them being contractually unable to sell books in perfect condition or something.
blairbeckwith··on A student's guide to startups (2006)
Will be very interesting to see how this comment ages based on the trajectory of the last couple of years.
blairbeckwith··on Page builders might not be a good idea
Poorly written article with poorly written arguments. What this person doesn't like is bad page builders, which is reasonable. But they seem completely unaware of what is possible in modern page builders.
blairbeckwith··on Banshees of Inisherin: The Game
Brilliant - no notes.

Makes me wish for more unconventional film-game adaptations.

blairbeckwith··on The Internet’s Richest Fitness Resource Is a Site from 1999
The article includes the link in the first paragraph and is worth reading if this type of thing [exercise/websites] interests you more than a no context link.
blairbeckwith··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
There is a small utility called Replacicon[1] that fixes this.

blairbeckwith··on Open RuneScape Classic
Programming scripts for SCAR in Pascal was actually the farthest I ever got in to programming - those scripts were the first things I ever wrote, and also the last. I wonder why.
blairbeckwith··on A startup is deploying armed bodyguards to NYC
Anyone taking this seriously is very gullible.

Whole thing is laughable, stock photography, "I am very badass" language. Submitted by a new user.

blairbeckwith··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm … it’s sarcasm right? Based on the entire history of startups, you truly don’t believe that companies can focus on user growth or profitability, and those directions have different levers?
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Well, that was an easy sell.
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: A Site for Insider Knowledge?
The type of service you're looking for is generally called an "expert network", and as a sibling said, Alphasights is one of the biggest. Others that I have experience with as a consultant are Guidepoint, GLG, and Coleman Research.

Your experience using them will vary; they're incredibly expensive, they don't do a particularly good job of vetting the experts they find, but there is definitely some gold there.

blairbeckwith··on Legal weed is wreaking havoc on return to office: ‘all of NY is wake and baking’
It is not “mostly just [them]”. Many, many people - most people, maybe - would rather the world not smell like weed.
blairbeckwith··on Airbnb removed my negative review
I don’t think this does much to solve the problem - “we investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong”.
blairbeckwith··on Airbnb removed my negative review
You would do it by changing the legal structure, but not by requiring any employees of Airbnb to manage the properties themselves, any more so than TripAdvisor employees manage hotels today.

Require Airbnb hosts to pay for a license, have regular inspections, etc.

blairbeckwith··on Airbnb removed my negative review
I think based on context it's clear they mean "regulated like hotels".
blairbeckwith··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
I'll never tell people they have to, but winter running can be really enjoyable. I committed this year to doing as much of my training outside through the Canadian winter as possible, and so far it's been a dream. I ran through the storm that ripped through Ontario right before Christmas and caught myself thinking that I wasn't sure how much worse conditions would have to be for me to stop having a good time.

Like the beginning of your comment, it ultimately comes down to gear. An ankle injury is a good reason to not push yourself running, but the weather need not be :)

blairbeckwith··on Gripes with RSS after one week
This is definitely annoying. I understand why larger publishers do it, but it drives me crazy when more independent writers/publishers do it.

It's enough of a problem that some RSS reader services have a feature that does exactly what you describe re: fetching the full article contents. Unread on iOS does this, as does Feedbin I believe, although you'll only find it on paid services/plans because of the ongoing costs associated with powering it.

blairbeckwith··on Stripe is holding over $400k of mine with no explanation
Using a fire extinguisher on a small flame before it grows in to needing the fire department seems like a reasonable approach.
blairbeckwith··on [dead]
And even worse, he[1] calls himself a professor!

[1] Well, not really, but journalists have.

blairbeckwith··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
Does this apply to everyone? If I build and sell an indie software product, should I only be able to sell it for the distribution costs ($0.02/user/month, say) once I have recouped someone's definition of a fair hourly wage for building it?
blairbeckwith··on I make $8k/year sending cheap flight alert emails
If a bag of quality beans is $15 and you go through one a week, you’re most of the way there.
blairbeckwith··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
Tons of things have taken more than 10 years to stop sucking. Digital cameras, MP3 players, "smart" phones, arguably laptops...

I am not a VR believer by any stretch, but this is such myopic thinking.

blairbeckwith··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
You are arguing against the opinion "it sucks right now, but it can get better" with "it sucks right now". Is your position that things that suck can not get better?
blairbeckwith··on iPad Pro M2
Probably why she only edits 90% of her work on iPad. I think there's a huge percentage of non-developers who are exactly in this boat – can do 90% of their work on an iPad, and enjoy that experience, but keep a traditional computer around for the 10%.
blairbeckwith··on Americans Are Too Fat to Donate Their Bodies to Science (2017)
This is now my dying wish.
blairbeckwith··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Exponentially more training data for Joe than Steve, and infinity more training data in a podcast episode setting.
