bjtitus··on Dozens of U.S. states say Apple stifles competition, back Epic
The fact that these browsers exist is very pertinent to the original comment, though. The anti-trust case against Microsoft with IE may have gone very differently if it had been about rendering engines on Windows.

This also completely ignores the distinction that it's the App Store which doesn't allow third party rendering engines and not iOS itself (you could create a free developer account and build and run a version of Chrome using Blink if you'd like). So this comes back to the larger question of whether Apple should be allowed to so heavily restrict the installation of software to its own distribution mechanisms.

bjtitus··on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire
There's still 3 years left until the end of his first term. A lot can change when there's still 3/4 of your term left.

When he was elected he was 4 years older than the oldest sitting president (who preceded him). What makes you think the second term will be any different?

bjtitus··on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire
> Biden likely won't be the one to run

Why is this likely?

bjtitus··on I was deceived about Covid vaccine safety
> There are literally over an order of magnitude more adverse effects and deaths reported since the rollout of the covid vaccines than for all vaccines in the 20+ years before that (including the flu vaccine that roughly half of Americans take every year)

Putting aside the obvious difference in societal impact and media coverage, which the modern flu has never received, it seems like the drastic differences in vaccine uptake absolutely contributes to this.

Flu vaccine uptake in 18+ was estimated at 45.3% in 2018-2019, 37.1% in 2017–18, and 43.3% in 2016-2017 [1]. It's sitting at 76% for COVID right now [2].

bjtitus··on America Will Collapse by 2025 (2010)
In 2019 the defense budget would have been #3 on your list, under only Social Security and Medicare + Medicaid. Perhaps using a pandemic year with extra outlays to avoid economic collapse is not the best way to discuss overall government spending.

In typical years the Defense spending is equal to each of the discretionary non-defense spending and "other" mandatory spending which excludes Medicare + Medicaid and Social Security. Medicare + Medicaid and Social Security spending have certainly increased the most and that seems to be inline with the increased spending on health care over the last few decades.

It's also worth noting that the non-defense categories still include defense related spending like veterans' income security, benefits, and services.

bjtitus··on Djokovic's PCR test was manipulated?
In 2016 "22% of Serbian citizens who had contact with public institutions included in research (traffic police, public health, educational system, courts - civil litigation, public services that issue official documents, departments responsible for social welfare), had paid bribe at least once in the previous year."

bjtitus··on Thoughts on Lex Fridman's Interview with Pfizer CEO
This seems kind of like taking antibiotics to help with stomach bugs. I wonder how the nasal microbiome [1] is affected by this and whether chronic prophylactic treatment would be more harmful than helpful on a large scale. Early on there were papers [2] suggesting oral and nasal rinsing to reduce COVID prior to vaccine availability.

bjtitus··on Risk of myocarditis following sequential COVID-19 vaccinations by age and sex [pdf]
> the flu was somehow eradicated at the outset of mass covid testing, many of the covid tests did not distinguish between the flu and covid.

What do you mean when you say that tests did not distinguish between COVID and the flu? Are you referring to simultaneous infection? I'm not aware of any PCR or antigen tests for COVID which would produce positive results for flu patients. Nor any antigen or rapid molecular assays for the flu which would produce positives for COVID patients.

Seems much more reasonable that social distancing and masking significantly reduced flu transmission.

bjtitus··on FDA authorizes first antiviral pill for Covid, Paxlovid
> cannot be attributed to a party allegiance in the US. There are as many if not more liberal vaccine refusers as there are conservative ones

Why must there be a single attributable factor? It seems likely that there are multiple. Party allegiance certainly appears to be one of these from numerous polls and analyses [1]. Poverty and insurance status is likely another [2].

I don't know, I've had some horrible FOMO for shoes. ;)
bjtitus··on America is running on fumes
The problem with this theory is that the current top-weighting is not all that much higher than during previous historical periods. There's a decent overview [0] covering the historical S&P 500's highest concentrations of the top 10 stocks which ranged from a low of 17.5% in 2014 to a high of 25.5% in 1980. It's a little under 30% today. Needless to say, the returns over the decades following 1980 were some of the most consistently positive in history [1].

bjtitus··on Will Nix Overtake Docker?
Oh wow, this is fantastic! Thanks for the tip and I'd like to thank you for all of the work you do on nix + Darwin. I'm using your `nix-env.fish` package and it's made things much easier than when I tried this setup a few years ago.
bjtitus··on Will Nix Overtake Docker?
I've set up my new M1 MacBook Pro using Nix and it's been going relatively well. Home Manager manages global tooling like Neovim, random CLI tools, and config files while I've set up `default.nix` files to use with `nix-shell` per-project. The set up of each project can be a little tedious as I still find the language confusing but once everything is set up the reliable re-creation is excellent. I love the feeling of opening the nix shell and feeling like I have each tool I need for that project without worry of polluting my user space or conflicts between projects.

The top 5 states for COVID infection per-capita (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/corona...):

North Dakota

Tennessee

Alaska

Wyoming

South Dakota

I don’t believe any of these states even have a single “sardine can on rails” used by daily commuters.

The idea that you are less likely to be infected in rural Wyoming because you commute by car is pure fiction based on the data. Very few people in the United States are able to avoid grocery stores, pharmacies, or restaurants for more than a week or two.

bjtitus··on Video of Tesla FSD almost hitting pedestrian receives DMCA takedown
This would have been reckless from a human driver and was just as reckless for FSD.
bjtitus··on Spread of Delta variant driven by both immune escape and increased infectivity
> Natural immunity should be better because you are exposed to all the same proteins in the vaccine plus more

This directly contradicts what immunologists seem to be finding as in the "Antibodies elicited by mRNA-1273 vaccination bind more broadly to the receptor binding domain than do those from SARS-CoV-2 infection" [1] study.

Summarized by the director of the NIH [2]:

> antibodies elicited by the mRNA vaccine were more focused to the RBD compared to antibodies elicited by an infection, which more often targeted other portions of the spike protein. Importantly, the vaccine-elicited antibodies targeted a broader range of places on the RBD than those elicited by natural infection.

If there's one thing we should learn from this pandemic it seems like the complexity and non-intuitiveness of the immune system is amongst them.

bjtitus··on Why Teslas Keep Striking Parked Firetrucks and Police Cars
Good luck getting this rolled out in even a fraction of the emergency vehicles on the roads.

There are literally tense of thousands of these emergency departments and even more when you consider other vehicles which may be stopped roadside.

Perhaps something great to discuss for the future but not at all practical for the next few years or even decade.

bjtitus··on FB users buying Oculus VR headsets to get customer service prioritization
The really shocking thing is the lack of any delay with email changes. I've known several people whose accounts were hacked and properly flagged by Facebook within hours but the hacker was able to change the email address immediately with no waiting period and remove the other addresses so access was impossible.

I tried this on my own account shortly after and, sure enough, there's no waiting period where previous emails remain allowed to reset passwords.

bjtitus··on FB users buying Oculus VR headsets to get customer service prioritization
The real moral is to not build your company without any modicum of user support.

The users who have any clue what 2FA is are not the ones getting their account hacked. They are the 60+ year olds who use Facebook as their only contact with friend and family, unfortunately.

bjtitus··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
The account of one of my relatives was hacked in a password breach recently and I've been trying to contact any support representative at Facebook for over 2 months. We noticed this within 5 hours of the hack happening and the email being changed.

I've filed support tickets with Oculus using my own headset's serial number - no response. We've been through every Facebook "help" page you can possibly image (ID checks, hacked account support, responding to security alerts) - got automated responses of absolutely no help. I've even reached out to people I know personally who work at Facebook and, of course, no one seems to have any idea who to talk to.

Turns out there are no support reps for dealing with deleted accounts. That should tell you all you need to know.

bjtitus··on Apple's iCloud+ “VPN”
I'm curious what the details around the anonymous IP address assignment are. Protecting copyright holders seems to be the point of the IP assignment to not break content restrictions.

Are they able to assign a set for an entire country? If so, that doesn't narrow it down all that much. However, major league sports blackouts wouldn't work, so is it by city?

bjtitus··on U.S. adds just 266,000 jobs in April, far below expectations
> the proposed “hosed" bracket bracket is about about 92nd-98th percentile by individual income

The figures get even worse in this case. The 95th percentile of individual income has far greater wage and wealth growth over the last 40 years.

bjtitus··on U.S. adds just 266,000 jobs in April, far below expectations
I'd be really curious what your opinion is informed by since I don't see any data to back it up.

Those in the Top Quintile (~200k in 2010 and ~250k today, so right in the middle of your proposed hosed bracket) have seen the greatest increases in Mean Income in the last decade [^1 p.8]. Those in the Upper Income bracket (~190k in 2000 to 207k today) have seen a 20% increase in wealth in the last 30 years while lower brackets have declined [^2].

Do you have any data to backup your assertion that "being a hard working professional in this country is losing its allure, and is increasingly a suckers bet"? These jobs seem to have a much greater increase in wages [^3 Fig. F][^4 Fig. 1] (4x in the last 40 years) than those in all other lower income groups. I'm not sure how anyone could come to the conclusion that increasing wealth and top of the pile wage growth are "a suckers bet".
