bjtitus··on Flock impersonates journalist in order to cancel his hotel reservations
Also holding rooms for that block, though.
bjtitus··on Apple Leasing Program
In the short term at a micro level, not a problem at all for people who can afford the device and probably a better deal.

At a macro level, yet another category where prices will continue to increase and buyer reaction will be subdued by lower installments and longer terms. Like 50 year mortgages and 7 year car loans.

But of course, this is the point. Phones are a durable good at this point. The focus on services and more financing options are the next levers without innovation.

bjtitus··on Apple Leasing Program
Perhaps because ownership is becoming increasingly out of reach for portions of the population.
bjtitus··on NixOS 26.05
I've used this set up for 3 or 4 years now and love it. I used to hit bottlenecks having to edit some nix files once or twice a month and forgetting the language but LLMs dramatically reduce that barrier.
bjtitus··on With Wall Street’s help, you’re about to be forced to buy stock in SpaceX
> internet available from every place on the globe

I keep hearing this refrain that Starlink is going to connect everyone. LTE already covers 93% of the population globally [1]. There are obviously dead spots but I really don't see the economic case for Starlink coverage. I frequently travel with a mini and I appreciate the near certainty of connection but it seems like a luxury item. The vast majority of the time cell connection is fine. I suppose Starlink could eat all the telcos but it seems like they aren't too far behind and this connectivity will be commoditized.

Where are these open models that are as good as GPT and Claude and run locally?
bjtitus··on Valve raises Steam Deck prices by more than $200
To be fair, there are plenty of local models you can run. Seems surprising that in 5-10 years those models wouldn't match state of the art today.
bjtitus··on ATMs didn’t kill bank teller jobs, but the iPhone did
I wouldn't call checking a bank balance and initiating transfers "serious tasks". Maybe important but they aren't complex.
bjtitus··on ATMs didn't kill bank teller jobs, but the iPhone did
Exactly. 96% of internet users use mobile phones. 62% use PCs.

bjtitus··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
Why doesn't Facebook sue if this is the case? Get TikTok taken down and leave Instagram as the only alternative.
bjtitus··on Show HN: Detail, a Bug Finder
I looked for an explanation of what the tool does on my behalf on your site but didn't see anything.

I guess I expected on the homepage or maybe "About" but I was looking for something related to whether you open PRs on my behalf given that OAuth prompt.

I think adding that or some explanation during onboarding about the permissions might help.

The quote should be updated from "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent" to "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain alive".
bjtitus··on Eye drops could replace glasses or surgery for longsightedness, study says
I've used contacts for about 20 years and I prefer them to glasses doing anything active and generally traveling. I would be very worried about navigating the world without being able to read things 3 feet away with my prescription of -4 so I always travel with a pair of glasses.
bjtitus··on Show HN: Async – Claude code and Linear and GitHub PRs in one opinionated tool
I've really been enjoying the mobile coding agent workflow with [Omnara](https://omnara.com/). I'd love to try this as well with a locally hosted version.
bjtitus··on Fastmail breaks UI in production
> It also scratches the justice itch: it the company doesn't pay attention or looks bad in public and you get some vindication for being ignored.

This is an interesting point. There is some satisfaction from the likes, the comments, and the assurance that _someone_ is seeing your frustration even if the company does nothing.

> If your social media is just a marketing channel, at least make that clear so i don't even bother reporting issues that route

Is this snippet from their Twitter bio clear?

"If you need assistance, please submit a ticket: http://fastmail.com/support"

bjtitus··on Fastmail breaks UI in production
There are many reasons why reaching out to support will be more effective. Logging may be tied to accounts, support systems may upload client side logs where appropriate, an event may be tracked to determine a point in time when you had the problem so relevant logs can be checked.

Their messaging probably could have been better here to say "we're looking into this. If you have time, please file a support request".

On Fastmail.com, the support request is two clicks away, under the big ? button in the upper right and "Contact Support". I'm not sure how much time you have but it took me less than 1 minute to find this button and submit from my logged in account.

bjtitus··on Wall Street sell-off turns 'ugly' as US recession fears grow
I keep seeing people post the Atlanta GDP forecast without context around the short term import imbalance.

"the January surge in imports - especially for gold - caused the model to move negative. As the Atlanta Fed noted: "the contribution of net exports to first-quarter real GDP growth fell from -0.41 percentage points to -3.70 percentage points".

Usually there would be an offsetting increase in inventories, but that is a lagging indicator. This is a short-term distortion and will balance out over the next month or so. I don't expect negative GDP in Q1." [1]

bjtitus··on Senators say TSA's facial recognition program is out of control
Yeah, it seems pretty useless. Nothing stops them from simply doing this on publicly available data online as well.

We’ve known for over a decade that DHS, FBI, CBP, and local police buy location data.

bjtitus··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
That would seem to negate the entire point of any editorial column then, right? If we don't care about their opinion, what's the point of reading in the first place?
bjtitus··on Shaving is too expensive
> I've never been anywhere inside the US where I could disembark a plane and buy razor blades for my DE razors

This is odd. I've purchased razor blades from Walgreens and CVS locations across the US. Pharmacies in New York, San Francisco, and Denver as well as local pharmacies in small towns. I've also purchased them traveling abroad in Europe and the UK.

I just checked Walgreens' stock around me and every store within 5 miles (I think there's 7 of them) claims to have the Walgreens brand DE razor blades in stock.

Been using DE razors for probably 15 years and never had anything more than a nick.

Who are these non-wealthy individuals who can't afford ramen but hold over $100 million in assets of _publicly traded companies_?

> the notion of "tax" being just supposed public good versus requiring transactional value ("no taxation without representation") was a founding issue for the U.S.

This was a representational issue, not non-transactional taxation. Property taxes existed in many colonies 100 years before the revolution.

bjtitus··on U.S. Added 818,000 Fewer Jobs Than Reported Earlier
From Reddit[1]:

Believe it or not, I work at the BLS.

You can either choose accurate numbers or timely reports, but you can't have both.

If you want accuracy, then we need to wait for the QCEW report to be released. This is quarterly, so we wont know what the employment number for January is.. until possibly late April or Early May.

Do you care what employment was 5 months ago?

Thats why there is an annual benchmarking process, where we look back at the previous 5 quarters of QCEW data and are able to reconcile the differences.

The monthly estimation is like playing the "telephone" game. Maybe you played as a child. One person whispers a phrase into the ear of the person next to them and it gets whispered down a big line of people. Once at the end everybody laughs at how different the final phrase is compared to the original phrase.

The further away we get from the benchmarked data is the same as being further away from the first time the phrase was whispered - noise WILL enter the data - and it will begin to diverge from the "universe", or the original phrase in the telephone game.

There is no conspiracy. There are literally millions of businesses who report their employment data every month. There are easily 100+ eyes on the employment data at the BLS.

It is statistically impossible that all 100 BLS employees and the millions of reporters are all in a big "help Biden" conspiracy and there isn't a single iota of evidence or whisperings of a conspiracy.

Welcome to the nature of statistics!

bjtitus··on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American
I would have sworn I've read the opposite but found this history [1] outlining usage of SSNs:

> Private sector use of the SSN is neither specifically authorized nor restricted. People are asked for an SSN at banks, video rental outlets, hospitals, etc., and may refuse to give it. However, the provider may, in turn, decline to furnish the product or service, leaving some to conclude they have no real choice.

> Throughout the history of the Social Security program, the SSN, originally intended to be used only to record Social Security earnings, has been adopted for other purposes, both governmental and private. The broad-based coverage of the Social Security program makes the SSN widely available and a convenient common data element for all record-keeping systems and data exchanges.
