bjd2385··on Show HN: I built an autopilot for the lunar lander game
Really cool! The fact that astronauts handled the landing in the Apollo missions is nerve wracking
bjd2385··on One does not simply 'pip install'
Poetry is pretty much the way to go.
bjd2385··on The technology behind GitHub’s new code search
When can we have a usable search in GitLab?
bjd2385··on Slack's private GitHub code repositories stolen over holidays
This is exactly why secrets should not be stashed in any Git repository. Granted, I'm not sure they're much safer in other managed services dedicated to protecting our secrets, with the news of several breaches as of late :/
bjd2385··on The case for dynamic, functional programming
Wait where is self.count set, and is it 0 or 1?
bjd2385··on Migrate Your Gitlab Instance
GitLab migrations seem to be hard to pull off and rather time-consuming, but I found this tool automated and transferred my organization from GitLab.com to my self-hosted instance rather seamlessly. What have others used?
bjd2385··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
Same in Boston, MA, US
bjd2385··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
Was just about to post this, I'm seeing issues.
bjd2385··on My business card runs Linux
Very creative and original, but I don't think I want to plug any complete machine into mine, let alone over USB haha. This is sort of like passing out flash drives, and plugging it in hoping there's no malicious content.
bjd2385··on Space Math
This reads like a code style guide, but for math. E.g., like https://google.github.io/styleguide/pyguide.html
bjd2385··on Elevator.js (2015)
This is awesome haha
bjd2385··on Tesla is outrunning the supply chain crunch
Thanks for providing this context, good to know.
bjd2385··on Gov Parson pushes to prosecute reporter who found security flaw in state site
This is probably the most toxic thread I've read on this site in a long time. Like wow.
bjd2385··on Gov Parson pushes to prosecute reporter who found security flaw in state site
Well-said. This ... makes me want to leave this HN story altogether.
bjd2385··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Does anyone have any figures on what regular banking systems use for accepted/official currencies? I feel like this has blown up so much that it makes sense to compare and contrast.
bjd2385··on Dutch brewery burns iron as a clean, recyclable fuel
I don't know how this would scale. Like, you can't deliver iron filings/powder efficiently via pipes, can you? Certainly not via existing infrastructure. Clogs would probably be certain.
bjd2385··on Mathematicians should stop naming things after each other
Ugh I feel both sides.
bjd2385··on The average consumer loses over $150 a year renting a router from their ISP
Lol this is exactly the reason I bought a surfboard the first month I moved in, and it's already paid for itself (and it's very easy to configure - a phone call to their support, read 'em a barcode, and you're ready to go).
bjd2385··on The Disneyfication of a University
Maybe everything.
bjd2385··on Open-Source Home Automation
I spun this OS up as a VM and it does not detect my Wemo smart plugs. However, I'm also not able to detect them from my current phone (running v1.24, I believe, of the app). However, my former phone, which is still running v1.23.1 of the app, _is_ able to see them and connect to them.

Anyone else experiencing this same thing?

bjd2385··on 1/0 = 0
To be honest, this is the kind of post I'd write after a few beers when I'm not giving a shit and I think people have the right idea about something a lot of people would find controversial. Great post! You've made a real contribution here.
bjd2385··on The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro (1852)
If I'm not mistaken, he is buried at Mt. Hope cemetery in Rochester, NY. I remember from my visits that he has two grave stones, each with a different birth date, because his real birth date is unknown.

Actually, according to the Wikipedia article, "The exact date of his birth is unknown, and he later chose to celebrate his birthday on February 14. In his first autobiography, Douglass stated: 'I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it.'"

bjd2385··on PEP 572: Python assignment expressions has been accepted
Honestly, after seeing the first list comprehension, I can tell that this feature will probably increase code readability for me, but it's definitely going to take more thought to understand where values are coming from.
bjd2385··on Python’s For - Else
I agree. It's seldom something I've used in my scripts/small projects for this exact reason.

It should also be noted that there is a `while-else` compound statement as well, wherein using a `break` immediately exits the loop, without executing the `else` clause [1].

bjd2385··on Birds had to relearn flight after meteor wiped out dinosaurs
I liked the article's statement that "there were no more perches." Is that to say, then, that even birds that "perch" refused to do so on cliffs? Certainly, not all of the trees perished as well.
bjd2385··on Many medical devices on the market have undergone no clinical testing
This sounds like individuals or groups of individuals covering their own rears instead of facing the problem for themselves.

It's very difficult to see product defects from behind a desk. And it's impossible to recognize the personal complications and difficulties that arise for people on the receiving end while looking at statistics and financial reports.

bjd2385··on Origami-inspired soft artificial muscles
Reminds me of cell flagella.
bjd2385··on A glut of PhDs who can’t find academic jobs
More like the entire higher education system. This is what happens when businessmen run an education system and not True academics.
bjd2385··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
I don't understand why this is such a big story. It's not localized to academics.
bjd2385··on Opioid Use Could Explain 20% of the Drop in American Men from Labor Force
Most factories in my area will start you off at less than $14/hr. Granted it's full time, but that's roughly less than $20k/yr after taxes, which is hardly enough to live on, let alone raise a family on. I worked for 6 months putting rolls of tape in a box for a smidgen over $10/hr. And at the end I walked out the door because there were no prospects of moving up.

Most of the people I know have (single?) parents who are in the same boat, making it almost impossible to move out on their own. Plus, you need reliable transportation, and vehicles are expensive. For someone just getting out of high school it's likely not an option.

Basically what I'm saying is, there are a lot of barriers that any employer would need to help overcome (wage being perhaps the biggest part) before you see any changes in this sector of society.

No kid my age wants to be a drug dealer. I don't care who you are or how poor your home life was. I would much rather go to work, get a loan for a half-decent (or even somewhat nice) vehicle that'll last me a decade if I take care of it, have my own apartment so I can have a few friends or my girlfriend over, etc.

I wouldn't say my generation is lazy. I just don't think factories or employers in general should require stable state of mind or hard work without paying enough to really make a difference in someone's life, i.e. enough to support a stable, independent way of life.
