bjcubsfan··on How to parent more predictably (2018)
Advice from Alan Kazdin from Yale has influenced my parenting of my 4 young boys more than any other single source. His recommendations against punishment are based on the fact that research shows they are not effective for long-term behavior change in children. It is challenging to use the methods in heated moments, but even without perfect application, they have been helpful.

Here is an article that introduces the ideas:

Here is his book, that has full details and many examples:

They also store passwords in plain text. They emailed me my password for a reminder on a season ticket account. My account is a few thousand dollars, others would be 10s of thousands.

The OP agreed and replaced the image. It wasn't a nude due to cropping. It was the same as on Wikipedia here:

Thank you!

The Lenna image that is drawn is originally from a nude image in Playboy [1]. It causes me to associate your work with sexism and pornography. I'm sure not everyone makes this association, but why not use a free stock image or a great work of art for the demo?

bjcubsfan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2016)
My team needs an engineer/data scientist/programmer to work on the Federal Aviation Administration's Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). The job is in Oklahoma and offers low cost of living, great work/life balance, technical freedom, and interesting challenges. Here's a longer write up I have made: https://gist.github.com/bjcubsfan/5433ea47b33a3c46f8da Here's the official job ad: https://lstechllc.applicantpro.com/jobs/350503.html
bjcubsfan··on GPS error caused '12 hours of problems' for companies
This error only occurred on a certain revision of GPS satellites, not all of them. It would have been a problem, except luckily the error was only on a message for determining UTC. The error did not affect the message or clock that are used in determining position.
bjcubsfan··on GPS error caused '12 hours of problems' for companies
No, the discrepancy was only on a timing message for determining UTC. This is not used for determining position.
bjcubsfan··on Show HN: HipStat – Track Inches, Not Pounds
I think the large picture of the woman in the bikini might be a little too revealing. You might go with something tamer. I imagine it would make the target audience more comfortable.
bjcubsfan··on Show HN: HipStat – Track Inches, Not Pounds
That demo measurement is for the upper arm. A waist that size would be disturbing, or an infant.
bjcubsfan··on Retiring Python as a Teaching Language
You can program in Python using Kivy [1] to create apps for Android, iOS, and the desktop. I made a simple app and took it through the entire process it is now on the Android app store. You are still using Python so you can focus on programming and not language features, but you get the benefits of programming something your students can show off.

Which is why he added the caveat "naturally".
bjcubsfan··on I love being wrong
I don't think that I would have anywhere near so positive an outlook in this situation. I am amazed by Sivers openness.

I am curious about the technical details here, but I suppose they can't have zero knowledge of your files if they're able to share them via link anywhere.

This changed in Gnome. The last time I used it a year or two ago, the default is to keep one monitor constant and switch desktops on the second monitor as you wish.
bjcubsfan··on GPS signals are surprisingly easy to disrupt
I think it's likely a driver who is constantly jamming his GPS. I have seen this in work with the FAA. A driver will go past the airport or park and deliver something. We see a temporary GPS outage which have traced back to delivery drivers in several instances. I imagine their company assumes their GPS equipment is broken, but still lets them drive.
bjcubsfan··on GPS signals are surprisingly easy to disrupt
I worked on that, but have not seen that particular article. There are actually a whole lot of them going by the Newark Airport even today.
bjcubsfan··on Texas students fake GPS signals and take control of an $80 million yacht
GPS signals are below the noise floor, so it wouldn't take much power to spoof them. You just have to get the gold codes correct (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_code).
bjcubsfan··on 5D ‘Superman memory’ crystal could lead to unlimited lifetime data storage
I worked in optics in grad school. I think that near-term commercial viability is not good. The precision optics and the ultrafast laser would have to be heavily adapted to work outside the lab, and would be needed for both read and write.

bjcubsfan··on Illegal GPS Jammers Are Widespread, Study Finds
It is not necessary to interfere with GPS in a wider area to mask your own position. The GPS signal is very low power (below the noise floor). It does not take much effort to block it. For this reason, the in car maskers (aka jammers) will block signals over a wide area unless they are precisely engineered to stay localized. There are a lot of poorly engineered maskers out there. I study these maskers and how they affect WAAS for the FAA.

Oklahoma City, OK Full Time Engineers with software experience Citizenship Required

We are looking for programmers who can work with Python, Django, C, and Matlab. They should have Linux/Unix experience. You will work with a company that contracts with the Federal government. This means a very stable job, 40 hour work weeks (Flex schedule available), and excellent benefits; but unlike many government positions, the specific group has stimulating work to do and is not locked in to ancient technology. The work focuses on developing tools for and performing data analysis on the system.

I can get you more information if you are interested:

bjcubsfan··on Time Zones
I also like world time buddy more than this one. It allows you to customize which time zones you see. As mentioned, it is great for scheduling future meetings. It is also helpful for not having to worry about daylight savings time differences between countries/states. It is also nice that it lets you export to many formats (clipboard, Google calendar, etc).
bjcubsfan··on This Site’s Domain is Stolen
In addition to the one time pad, you can specify other phone numbers. The system will call these phones and read the code aloud.
bjcubsfan··on What tool would *you* use to solve this?
I used python with pylab/matplotlib to sort and plot the columns. It was easy to spot the two sets. I suppose a histogram would have worked nicely. This also would have been easy with my selected tools.
